Whilst I share your concern about Pittonet being injury prone - he has played only 33 games out of 61 over the last 3 years - IMO there is no way Mirkov gets picked ahead of him if they are both available. If Pittonet (or TDK) is unavailable then I’d rather we use Young as the back up ruck and play S Durdin down back.

Against Cameron and Cox who are hardly elite ruckmen, Mirkov struggled to do anything around the grounds outside of taking the ruck taps. I think he had 1 or 2 actual possessions all game and I don’t recall him taking a mark. Against Gawn and Grundy he would get physically and mentally destroyed if we played him.
I think that there are games where it will be better to win the ruck than to have around the ground cameos from a ruckman. IMO if Mirkov can do that and tag a good ruckman out of the game then he will play games. It goes against modern ruck thinking, it's something that was done last decade but it makes sense to do it. But he has to be able to do it and I think this is what we were looking for on the weekend.

Pittonet wont play every game and he wont be pushed to do so.

Young won't be moved from defence unless he is failing there.

Mirkov is so far away from being an AFL player it isn't funny. He's coming from so far back I'm not trying to be negative, but if you combine the worst aspects of TDK and Pittonet, you come up with Mirkov's current skill set.
Is he that far behind Robert Warnock? Warnock played 88 AFL games without doing much more than tap the ball.

This was my point of view as well, but IMO there are games where it makes sense to go back to an old fashioned athlete who may not be able to play footy but can win hitouts.

Be good if lemmey can come in behind two good fwds like Oscar Allen has and TDK play ruck during the season ?

#23 was playing a strange role....
This is a real 'watch this space' for me.

Imo he played poorly when came back from injury last year, completely went into his shell, stopped trying to mark the ball, was essentially playing a negating role and not doing it well either.

Obviously just a practice game but you'd expect him to be taking complete control of a game like that, really hope he starts to play a more attacking role again because the footy he was playing prior to the shoulder last year was exceptional.

Has struggled since Jones departed

Don't think he was as good as 2021, perhaps he needs a dominant interceptor alongside of him

Yep, Gov, Marchy or Young...

I'd be playing 3 of Weitering, Marchbank, McGovern, Young or Durdin every week...
Let Weitering off the chain, to play his best role as an attacking interceptor...

I don't think Warnock is the type of player we should be aiming towards as a benchmark for long term success. Having said that Warnock at least had some fundamental skills ie. limited marking ability, decent ruck craft. So far I haven't seen Mirkov even exhibit a hint of either attribute. The games he has dominated the ruck hitouts in the reserves, have pretty much been against undersized makeshift ruckmen. Could you see Mirkov being competitive in a centre clearance battle with Gawn??

Agreed. He was exceptional in about 2 games in 2022. Definitely was down on 2020-2021 form.

Hopefully thats just about building synergy and injury but we need Weiters and Gov to be at their best for the majority of a season to be contenders. Young is more than capable as a 2nd fiddle... But we need Weiterbot.2000 back if we are going to dismantle teams like Geelong.

We were 8-2 when he went down last year. Was playing his part in a better team and we weren't reliant on him or Jones continually saving the day.

I'm thinking of the GC game last year: Carlton 19 hitouts vs. GC 52 (Witts 42) and consequently lost clearances badly 43 to 27. Which is essentially taking away our 1-wood.

We were comprehensively beaten by a team that was nowhere near our level off the back of those clearances. Mirkov - whilst not as good a footballer as Pitto or TDK - could have made a bigger difference in that game than either of them. He only has to halve the hitouts and it would go a long way to us winning the game.

Love TDK and Pitto but against Witts they can become a spectator. The hitouts cost us quite a few wins last year. The StK loss was another.

With the midfield we've got a dominant tap ruckman is the last piece of the puzzle. 210cm rucks who can jump don't come along too often.

Yes absolutely I can see him competing against Gawn at centre bounces.

And the comment about him only beating makeshift ruckmen is pretty selective. He's beaten everyone at VFL level in games that I've seen.

I love the way Mirk uses his big wings to slap the ball away from opponents(volley ball style), would like to see how effective this technique is against the best ruckmen.

Well we are waiting to see how he improves, the question is will he come on this season? We're clearly looking for it. IMO if he can dominate the ruck, or at least beat the better AFL rucks and he can defend against them around the ground. I think we will see him play regardless of whether he can find and do much with the footy.

We wont be wanting to play Pittonet every game and I don't think we will be wanting to go to TDK as number one ruck as we need that forward ruck. Unless another player like Lemmy really comes on and allows that to happen.

IMO, The club have recruited O’Keefe for the backup forward/ruck role. Lemmey was drafted for the McKay backup.
Both Lemmey and O’Keefe will hopefully spend time in the VFL developing and learning to play together.
Ready to com on, if needed and not too soon.
Great, smart drafting.

Cripps going off at qtr time was a factor in losing the clearances inthat game
