Vets have one of the highest suicide rates for any profession in the country

They get paid **** all for what they do. It’s shite job and they deserve respect for what they do.

As usual Wednesday is the light session of the week so some may have been designated to be managed??

Anyway concerning for me is that both Prestia Dow McCauliffe have not joined the main group since a couple of training sessions before Christmas, Prestia not there at all today.

The good is that Lynch, Nank, Lalor, Steely and MJ are all back fully.

Smillie: Just rehab today but hopefully just saving himself for Friday's session?

Tom Brown: Won each of the four 80 metre sprints in a canter, (the whole list was not involved in this but it continues the offseason theme of Brown being prominent in the speed drills, he also beat MJ in a ten meter shuttle game they were doing with player match ups. He is still no endurance athlete but for the position he plays it won't represent an issue IMO.

Non Contact Players: remain Brown & Bauer

Fawcett: A very prominent presence up forward, he is in magnificent shape.

Kossi: Training with the backs.

Lalor: My first look at him, brought down Taranto in a strong tackle finished off a couple goals in what was only little more than circle work, I loved his interaction with the coaches on the sidelines, really engaged.

**So it poured down with rain hence skill levels dropped, it was a light session so no real match sim to speak of.

I expect Friday will be a big session and hearing that some Saturday's there will match day scenario's.

Was there with @caesar. Good to catch up mate.

Not too much to add. A few drills focussed on structure and getting the game plan set with a focus on skill and skill execution and aligned effort. One of the drills focuses on a kick out after a point and then getting surge running all the way to inside forward 50. Lalor, Trezise and Broad were noticeable to me for their repeat efforts.

The intensity/effort level per drill seems to have gone up since before Xmas. Or maybe it was cooler/wetter and easier to work harder for longer.

The Tap was the big standout for me.

In some of the later drills Nank trained as a forward and Samson was rucking.

As we left Nigel did say some big running sessions were about to happen as well.

Hey all - I made it down to training this morning to take a look. They started about 9:20 - no public access for 'non-open' training but you have a pretty good view from the fence.

I'll post a few photos below of your forward and mid groups as they probably mean a bit more to you guys than me.

I have no pre-concieved views on any of these players so please take it as my views from a couple of hours only:

  • Forward group: The forward group trained right infront of me - it was a drill where one of the keys wrestled with a coach, and tried to bring the ball to front and center to the crumbing forwards. Tom Lynch seemed to train fully, unimpeded and was cleary the most mature. The younger guys (Faucett, Sims, Colina, Bauer) seemed to struggle a bit vs the coach. The small fowards were very zippy, chatty and the finishing was sharp (Campbell, Sonsie, Mansell, Rioli) - that said the intensity was relatively low and there was no pressure.
  • Midfield group: I was surprised that both Smilie and Lalor were in the midfield group - I thought I'd heard things about half back/half forward but they were both in there and didn't move. They did a drill where you'd recieve a handball and try to evade a tackler (and have a go at both). The clear standout was the way that Lalor approached the tackling - he gets low, and wide and is going to be a fierce tackler - looks like he's got the strength to really drive it home and make it hurt. When he was on the evasive side, he didn't really try to side step - more trusted his strength and hips to get through (think Rayner). Smilie tried to evade a little bit (not massively) and raise his hands high to keep his hands free (think Bont, Pendlebury).
  • Rehab group: Prestia, Hotton, Faull, McCauliffe, Young, Lefau. There was a nice moment where all the 30-40 fit players came over to cheer the rehab groups run throughts in a break.
  • Defence group: Was up the other end so didn't see anything. Balta was out there but wasn't with the Forwards.
  • They did some full field sprints - I think Tom Brown one the 2nd one, a bit hard to see the other others.
  • They they broke in to an almost full field drill - the highlight was Lalors cleanness and kicking. Not sure if it's been highlighted here, but I saw him take 4 varied kicks - all of which were drilled/weighted perfectly. I know he's strong, and clever but didn't realize he looked a very good kick as well. I also don't think I saw him fumble once - very impressed.

If you don't think he's better than others why should he be gifted midfield time? Being okay in the VFL isn't enough

bit hard to gauge a player who doesn't get any midfield time in the seniors as a mid. My comment regarding the VFL is he stacks up well as a mid in the VFL (go look at his numbers) but he doesn't get that same chance in the seniors when selected, he plays bit roles.

The club is playing him wrong, put him in the position we actually drafted him for and lets really see if he can sink or swim. If he sinks then ill agree with you doubters and move him on.
