The guys (along with Mick) certainly aren't just making things up as I found it hard to believe what I was seeing for someone we gave away a paltry #46 for.
We know where the trick is now for Jones but one can't fault what he's doing through the pre-season.

Jones must be one of those training track stars.

I remember hearing Cam Mooney* on SEN and Fox repeatedly singing his praises on his explosive athleticism at training but whenever i watched the Dogs play i kept thinking that Mooney was off his rocker, or Jones needed the confidence boosting , or Mooney was just talking him up to safen his own job at Whitten.

Toward the end of this year you could really hear Mooney tire of Jones though.

Now here we are with Jones at a new Club, and more raving about his explosive training capabilities from guys who have seen a lot.

No doubt all of us who have played a fair bit of footy have come across our share of "star track horses" who can't take it to the matches, and the "bludging track horses" who turn up and shine match after match.

I hold hope ( about a 20% chance) that Jones can do a Jay Shulz. Pick 46 was worth that punt considering our KPF stocks. So here's hoping.

* yes Mooney is a numbskull....but he still knows what it takes and what he's dealing with in this area.

good points, although i am hopeful that MM will get the best out of him.

Jones was a key tall in a team which routinely has suffered from poor delivery to the forward line. (post '11 season).

This is his 2011 Bio when he was paired up with Barry Hall

The tall forward blossomed in his second year in AFL ranks, playing 20 games and asserting himself in marking contests. He led the club in contested marks (43) and looks a ready-made replacement for the retiring Barry Hall in either of the key forward positions. Won the Tony Liberatore most improved player award as the club’s most promising player.

You can see why we get a few doggie supporters dropping in here as I feel it would have been disappointing to let him go so early in his career after such a promising start.

So, in short, I feel he will benefit from playing 2nd fiddle to Hendo

And Third string to Cas!!!!

Plenty to like about our forward stucture this year.

It seems Jones' issues were twofold. 1. Playing as the no.1 target which means getting the opposition's best shutdown defender each week. But furthermore, not having any real second tall option which meant more double teams etc.

Now at the blues he will be asked to play 3rd string (and hopefully 2nd string) but at the very least he fills a need and has time on his side.

The fact that he played so well and looked so promising when they had Barry Hall speaks volumes. You have to wonder though why he was so keen to leave the dogs, if the players were aware that Boyd was coming into the fold.

Very surprised that Tutt managed third in the time trial, that is a positive sign for him (personally I don't see him in our Best 22 at this stage). I suspect people will be very disappointed with Tutt's lack of physicality around the footy though, hopefully he can work on that aspect of his game this year.

Really looking forward to watching Jones this season. If Casboult and Henderson stay fit I think he can be a very solid contributor.

He's a low risk/high reward proposition. We didn't really give up anything for him of note and if he adds outside run and/or kicking skills which were the key attributes that we were looking for in the draft, then his lack of physicality can be minimalised.

What's one teams junk could be anothers treasure..

Jones is only just 23 years old so not really expecting a lot just yet. I think the Doggies may have seen him through his early growing years, now is generally the time these sort of players start to come on.

At least there will be a bit of competition for tall forward spots with Watson and young Foster amongst the group, particularly if the Kreuzer experiment pays off.

That may well be right but you can only call it as you see it.
Jones isn't drawing these comments for no good reason. The trick is now for Malthouse as much as it is for Jones to make the whole thing work.

Jones wasn't just someone who fell out of the system that we happened to pick up.
He was targeted months ago and now we've got him, so...........................over to you Mick.

Lot to like about Jones - have certainly noticed from footage that for some reason he doesn't take overhead marks very often though - certainly not a pack-marking option like Casboult; for a 198cm player he has pace and agility and might just be ready to make his mark. The Bulldogs essentially swapped a tall forward for Caleb Daniel (smallest player on an AFL list?) so it will be interesting to look back later this year.

Experiment!
