Predict how good will Tomic be...?

I dont think anyone can write BT off on any surface, but specifically re: previous posts on clay. Who knows how he may tailor his game. Has not had the thousands of matches on clay like the euros. All the ruskies go down to the bollitieri equiv in spain and juan antoni samaranc dopes them good, starting about 14/15, they know how to play the drawn out game, and physically have built up that constitution. Agree that it might not be obvious, but come back in 4 years, and see how he goes. Someone woulda said same about joker 4 back.

Top 20 for sure now you would have to say.

At this stage you'd give him a chance against anyone outside of the big 4 on hard/grass.

Wimbledon is obviously going to play a big part in his ranking for this year. And his schedule comes into it to.

He is a bit unlucky that both the Australian Open and Wimbledon lead ins are short. He will probably have to go hard at the US swing like Fish, Isner etc do to get the ranking towards the top 10 eventually. It's hard to see him ever doing much on Clay.
u'd have to give him a chance versus every1 on hardcourt now. Where did he take a set off was it joke?

Djokovic is slightly better now that he never loses (who wouldn't be?), but he had a very tainted reputation in the early years.

Safin gets a mention only for his on-court poor sportsmanship. I realise he's quite approachable off the court.

Tomic really hasn't done anything yet to warrant the term "obnoxious". He exhibits confidence I suppose. But it seems like if you're not a complete gentleman like Federer and Rafter, you're the other extreme!
BT not done anything obnoxious? who ya kidding

1. He and his ol man worked off the court in protest at a sattelite even in perth
2. He whinged that a nigh match was after his bed time 24 months back. Risible. Someone should have told him and said, TA and Aus Open have got behind u, with the sweatshoppers nike, and they are promoting u thru primetime. OK, in this instance, it went late. But you can either get no funding, no sponsorship, and do it on your own, or you can buy in to the model the game has contructure around the "future"*

*future as noun for the next phenom. It aint Todd Reid or whatever his name was and not Donald Young in Oz.

I love how he constructs points with changes of pace, but Courier was right in his commentary. He has to get quicker, much quicker, or he'll forever be chasing balls in negative position.

He'll never be as quick as Djokovic or Nadal, but he has to improve that area of his game. But, fantastic effort and great mental strength! :)

dont know mick.

campbell brown was scouted as slow. But in the offseason of his last TACu19 year, went to the hawks coach Bodan Babijczuk and then with the androgens, he become one of the fastest at the afl combine testing @AIS. And did he win a grandfinal sprint.

Anyway, afl speed has multiple facets. 1 explosivity off mark. 2 anticipation. 3 stopping

courier said the other night, hewitts talent was speed, B 2 A. Re: b back to a.
recovering court position, getting back to spot on equal terms. This requires the Danyle PEarce agility :D

long limbs, he aint exactly Monfils, but Monfils court technique comes with cost, the injuries. Will never be the best mover, but can neutralise disadvantage with androgens. It is nigh and day v 2 years back. And it is at a threshold level, now, so he can be competitive and defend. Before, the movement was a disaadvantage

Bernie's movement has improved MASSIVELY over the past 12-18 months. Anyone should be able to see this. He's still far from an elite mover, and he never will be, but he's an adequate mover now and he will only get better around the court. He's only 19, when he's 23/24 and in his prime, his movement will be even better than it is today and will no longer be a talking point.

Drum, what we see is androgens at work. THASP.

now, he was a gangly 16 yo. Will never be the 6'3" Gail Monfils, but GM suffers from injuries cos ballistic.

U dont need to be the best mover to be the best defender. U need to anticipate, and move at 95% of Fed. And u can with a good "medical program". That jaw hewn, was not just the harsh slavic and balkan genes. You see the hollowed cheeks, well, there used to be an inverse correlation between gaining mass, muscle mass, and becoming leaner, so much leaner that the intrafacial white and red tissue, atrophies.

In laymans, he should have cheeks. He has put on 6kgs this last year, or 5 I think. Now, even in cycling, where they burned more calories, a 23 yo who rode the TourdFrance in 1980, at 23, he STILL had cheeks. Androgens. hormones. Exogenous.

With this external help, and a professional athletics trainer who breaks down the game of tennis and works to build the exposivity, first step, recovery, agility, and lateral movement, he will get to 95% of Fed.

The remaining 5% is not to advantage, it is declinging economies. Might be worth 3 points over 5 sets.

I dont need Tennis Has A Steroid Problem to know that they have been on gear for over a decade, coming from the cycling background, I know how it works. Red Queen effect, running on the treadmill to stay standing still cos of Nadal et al.

Difficult to work out Tomic's ability 4 agility, when he was 6'3" and 70kg as a 16yo. His speed potential however limited, was only going to reach its zenith, when he finished growing, and worked the equivalent co-ordination and some ballistic explosivity into those limbs, because he has the fine neuromuscular coordination, to lay a drop shot from 3 metres behing the bl when he is returning a forehand coming at him at 160kmph.

he did look damn slow and gangly and 16, and I wrote him off (stupidly so) then. Hindsight and reassessment, this is why I did so. I know Joe Siriani's coach well, he played a few Wimbledons, JS that is, but Tomic is about the only cat that puts the Foster Wallace in me. That off forehand short into the advantage serving box, a psuedo drop shot, is the most brilliant shot on the circuit.

He'll put on another 7kgs, and when he needs to, as statement, or intimidation, he will be able to unleash a serve at 220+ effortlessly. But he will be under 200 for his game, and only use it strategically, to play psychologically and kill the game, or, at significant break points. He will develop that power, with help, and a little gym work.

atleast on this board, you dont get the fanbois and mods out in arms to turf you off and report you for talking about drugs and that issue, if you mention individuals like Swan folks think it is a campaign against a team, just a troll, but these are just indicative of the culture across the entire landscape, not an indictment of an individual.

everyone must have noticed 2 years back at the Ausopen, Rafa came out about 8kgs lighter, cos he was "sick" and he was half the player.

No one suspicious or a little concerned at transparency and perception of "talent" in these circumstances.

Philosophical question - does talent come from a hypodermic, or are you content with ball sports and the hand eye neuro muscular coordination sports? I'd like to ask DFW.

Needs speed. The top players with play with him like Fed did if he doesn't get significantly quicker round the court.

Not sure if that can be improved on that enough through hard work or if you have to have it naturally.

Is it possible for me to close this poll now? The orignal results from when he burst onto the scene are becoming skewed.

Dunno if it's already been mentioned but cbf cycling through the shitload of pages, but does anybody else get the feeling that Tomic, with his unique game style may struggle to defeat the elite players atm?

I'm a big fan of how Tomic is able to identify and expose weaknesses in his opponents game, but against the more rounded players, he will surely struggle to manipulate the game to his advantage. As we saw with Federer, he hasn't the strongest offensive game, nor could he use his tricks to put Federer in much discomfort.

So should Tomic tinker with his game style, or develop a stronger offensive side to his game?

His unique style is what will make him a great. I actually think the opposite, he'll play great on the big stage against the big player, but will struggle in the early rounds against journeymen.

The BIG thing he needs to improve is the 1st serve. Crank it up!!!!

Yeah he's not doing much wrong atm, but if he were to concentrate on improving anything I would say his serve (particularly his 2nd serve) and his power shots.

He seems to have that forehand that he can all of a sudden smack the living suitcase out of, but it seems he likes to mix it in with all his other shots so we don't see it too often.

Also a bit off topic, but I'd be interested to know why he's insisted to the media that they prounce his surname "Tomik" when I'm pretty sure its "Tomich," I'm not of Yugoslav origin, but I'm pretty sure there's an accent on the c. I don't understand why, its not as though its hard to say "Tomich"...... Any Croations around?

A lot of Slavs anglicise the pronunciation of their names when they move here. It's just easier than correcting people all the time.

Come to think of it, it's pretty common amongst most ethnic groups. e.g. South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher pronounces his name Bow-cher rather than Boo-shay.
