I’m assuming the first practice game will be the week before this. I don’t see why this isn’t at the Whitten oval, given the was a game scheduled there previously.

All suburban games were removed, possibly for higher crowds at more easily regulated venues for covid. (and some travel differences in other examples)

The AFL scheduled two games at suburban/regional venues, there’s still two games except one isn’t official now for no reason. The club misses out on making money and clearly covid isn’t an issue for the aflw going ahead at these grounds.

A practice match at our home ground at marvel that we haven't played at for nearly a year is probably a good idea I would think.

So how do we all rate the Demons this year?
I'm sceptical. I reckon they finish in the 9-12 range. Got an amazing top end, but have too many players in their 22 who would never get a game at any serious finals quality side. I'd pick Carlton to make finals before the Demons (and I wouldn't have either in my predicted 8)

*Warning, facetious comment. All you people that fat shamed Brucey should be feeling happy, says he’s lost about six kg and can actually jump again

Bruce looks fantastic hopefully he has a fantastic year

Was there ever a summary of our forward 50 targets from last season posted? I recall after some games a poster would come in with the 'how many times each player was targeted inside 50' count.

My complete guess would be Bruce comfortably in #1.

I bring this up because, while I think it's great Bruce has lost some weight, I think one of our bigger issues last season was how often we sought out Bruce considering just how little his output really was. That tactic may have worked better if we had any damaging small forwards to clean up the one thing Bruce did consistently well, which was crash packs and bring the ball to ground. But we didn't, we still don't, and we've gone all in on the forward line being made up of mediums-talls this season.

What I'm most hopeful of is Bruce being put way down the pecking order (unless his form turns around) with the entries, and focus more on getting Naughton and Wallis better, and more, opportunities. If English is up forward more due to Martin, he's a bigger threat up there too, and very hard to outmark. And who knows what output we get from JUH, but he could factor in also.

If our strategy is another season of spamming kicks to Bruce, unless he starts bagging 4 a game, I would think we're in for another season of forward line pain. It's already going to be a weird setup with lots of mediums/rotating mids, but I think banking on 'crashing packs' and 'bringing the ball to ground' won't equate to much for us. We don't really play, or have enough, forwards capable of taking advantage of that by sneaking goals and applying pressure.

To put it simply, I hope we don't go all sunk-cost on Bruce if his output is similar to last season, and start to really isolate and target our best forwards. Give Naughton and JUH space to run and jump rather than clogging it up with Bruce. Give Wallis 1-1 contests which he does very well in. It's going to be a weird forward line (maybe even weirder than usual with our amount of mids) and we're going to have to work smarter to take advantage of that. Bruce can still have a place (he was getting to the right spots - just dropping marks and shanking kicks), and hopefully his confidence goes up now that he's lighter and presumably moving better, and those dropped marks and shanked kicks turn into regular goals.

I can’t remember a preseason thread in the last 10 years that has had less pre-season training information/updates etc in it than this one. We have become a bunch of old women gossiping about virtually nothing relevant in here and I include myself in that critique! Anyone have anything actuallu player related to share? Do we know if JUH looks like he’s up to the level? Any updates on the fringes like Dale? Lin Jong? Is weightman starting to show anything (I do fear for him as I think we over-reached taking him in the first round). Is it just completely impossible to get into any of the training sessions this year because of covid? I’m just curious as this forum is usually a wealth of intel and we seem to have been completely iced out this year? I myself have not been near the club at all this year as I’m buried in work so I’m relying on someone on here to help a brother out!!

I’m surprised the club has done nothing in regards to updates on JUH. Maybe it’s a tactic to not build the hype etc but a bit strange. There was a puff piece on Dale on the website a couple of days ago but nothing worth sharing.

I have heard that Jamarra has a long way to go to be ready for senior football and a debut in the early rounds is not expected. They are letting him settle in and concentrate on training without any extra pressure that can come from media attention.

I think covid has contributed a lot to that. Don’t know what the go is with watching training, but that would also have been more common pre-covid

Agree B85, looks really trim and agile

Which leads one to ask why he didn't put the hard work in at the beginning of last season particularly as a player on a nice contract who should have been eager to impress his new club. Has a lot to prove.

Well you never know what the club directive was. I don’t think he was too ‘fat’ last year maybe a couple of KGs but was carrying around a lot of heavy muscle as well, and has now leaned up.

He looks significantly leaner now than any time he did at the Saints IMO.

I imagine the club has learned some hard lessons from Tom Boyd and will be very cautious in protecting him from the media until they know he's ready for it.
