With Conroys announcement on anti siphoning at long last, what does it mean for the value of footy TV rights?

It means the pollies are front & centre in programming decisions.

Would Conroy believe what is good for his team is the prime determinant & 5tuff the rest, probably!!

Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy announced on Thursday changes to the list, opening up regular-season football games for pay-TV bidding but also promising to "protect the quality of games on free-to-air" via a mechanism to be determined.

The prudence of AFL and NRL officials is understandable given the mechanism for working out whether regular season games go on free-to-air or pay-TV is yet to be revealed by the government.

All of a sudden, politicians and bureaucrats have the potential to become programmers.

As one analyst noted: "That is very dangerous."

The NRL and AFL .... Their biggest issue will be ensuring the politicians and bureaucrats don't cost them at the negotiating table. The coming months will be a nervous time. After all, there's a lot at stake?

A billion dollars in fact.

So simple, its another nightmare: politicians calling the tune on what games people get to see.

in principal, its better to have a politically accountable politician (and collingwood fan) determining which games are on tv and which arent

but private interests and lobbyists are so dominant on this issue its hard to believe that conroys civic mindedness will have any effect whatsoever on the legislation

thats especially true if the internet filter or R-rated games meant anything to you...because if it did you would know that conroy is a giant ********ing douchbag polly of the highest order who cant be trusted to lie straight in bed, let alone shape policy

in fact his dumbass, ******ed ideas about the internet filter and his ****head belligerance in the face of common sense pretty much brought the labour government within an inch of losing an unlosable election to a climate change denying, misoginist, racist ****

im just glad the AFL is the non-profit and independent organisation that it is, and its within its remit and power to decide how much the FTA-PayTV ratio is worth to the game

with our structure, the looser the laws, the better for the code.

when the IC gets up, the same will be true for the NRL too

Caro on outsiders said a lot ws to be worked out in the rights but she thought the 1st 2nd 5th and 6th best games would be on FTA.

I suppose thats based on the way they are ranked now

Nice sensationalist story but do you think the AFL is that stupid ?

Basically the best 2 games will be FTA fri st night and the AFL wil do as it wants with the others.
It understands the need to grow the game so the setup will be much better tahn last time, when the AFL had to accept sevens offer without being able to negotiate on much of the detail.

"right of last refusal" sold by oakley/jackson admin - very short term thinking by those guys - whats new

No Pesso, the pollies will be involved in ranking the games in the future, thats the concern.

Not quite. Conroy has already come out and said a mechanism is needed to decide on 'quality' games but the Fed Govt will not be dictating which games. Otherwise he "would have Collingwood on every Friday night."

I agree with Wilson as well, FTA will be 1,2 5 & 6. Foxtel get an upgrade of an extra game as well as 5 in total direct with quality games 3 & 4.

No doubt Foxtel will pay a hefty price. This is their chance to lock in exclusive AFL content and not have to negotiate with other bidders.

The rub is. in victoria at least, that what has been high rating games has not always been the best quality - although the high rating games are obviously what the staions want.

Seems mid range clubs like Hawthorn Geelong Saints whch often take the 5th and 6th spot will could be on FTA more often

8th and 9th spot will be for all non vic games

The rounds will equate to these bands with 9 games per round (victorian TV market)

3 Games - all victorian games of which one will often be the friday night fixture on FTA. Second best game to come from here on FTA
The other will be the 3rd and on Pay

4 Games - two each of a vic club hosting a non vic club and a non vic club hosting a vic one
The best (4th overall) will be on pay, the next (5th and 6th) two on FTA - depending on timeslot youd hope they are where a vic club is playing outside victoria. the 7th is on Pay

2 games - all non-vic clubs - Pay TV

So Pesso, do the TV audiences of the games involving 2 X Melbourne clubs mirror their membership?
Appears not based on this Carlton claim:
an indication of the growing support and attraction of the Carlton Football Club was reflected in the television audiences with Carlton having the second highest television ratings for the 22 home and away rounds."

I see Andy Dementia has kyboshed an NRL rolling TV fixture set (?) 6 weeks out.
I dont think he wants pressure from the pollies every day of the week ... I'm with Andy on this.

Equally I dont think he wants FNF to be Vic only fixture given the game fails to draw decent viewer numbers on delay in WA, NSW & Q.

Its still the old "big4" for TV ratings (for now) judging by how the matches have been scheduled on FTA thus far

Hawthorns membership is big but:

-significant numbers live ourside victoria, especially tasmania

-not a big player in the AFL and MCC memebership - so there tends to be more actual footy club than , say melbourne with a lrge MCC contingent

Definitely in the mid tier in Vidtoria but catching up fast I'd say

the new rules will make no difference in WA.

7 9 and 10 dont like live telecasts of anything.

they will not show something on the digital channel that takes viewers away from prime time shows.on their main channels.

also there was no provision made to prevent games being black outs while both fox and fta both do a WA team game.

just this week ten showed the aust open golf on delay, yet not at all on one hd.

No word whether Seven might use their digital channel (s) for WA FNF when its on delay ?
Does any channel plan to use digital for live coverage then replay later on the main channel? Cant see it.
