It's an absolute win-win for someone in your position and may very well help the recovery process. It will also enable you to be more active and better fulfil your physio requirements.

I had a epidural injection in 2011. Went from excruciating pain in the L5/S1 to feeling completely fine. Ended up having a laminectomy anyways as it hadn't actually healed even 1% 6 months after the epidural and am fine now
