Catholics' attempts to minimize their church's crimes will always be funny

Only 5%? Damn, we should all just look the other way, like the other 95% of the priests for so long

Lol how many is that? A 1000

I'd take the bet that that % is higher than society too

The Royal Commission found the percentage of Catholic Priests who had abused children was 7%. But in the orders which had more contact with children through running schools, groups like the Marist Brothers and Christian Brothers, it was 20%. In the Brothers of St John, a smaller order than ran schools, it was 40%……

But let’s take the smallest number, 7% and apply it to another profession, teachers. The average number of teacher in an Australian school is 30. That means if it was at the same rate as priests there would be at least 2 paedophile teachers at every school in the country, and 40,000 across the nation.

How the F is that a small number? If there was just one school in the nation that had the Marist/Christian Brothers rate of sexually abusing (20%), so 6 teachers out of 30, there’d be a massive outcry.

I’d ask that apologist in the tweet if he’d be comfortable sending his kids to a school where an unknown 2 out of the 30 teachers were pedos……

From Louise Milligan's article in The Saturday Paper. Just heartbreaking.

I thought of all those hundreds of broken, red-eyed men, who looked older than their years, who queued up at my book events over the years since Cardinal was published and clasped my hand and were often unable to speak.

They were once little boys who ran around playgrounds like Ballarat’s St Alipius, the wind in their faces.

This week, as others canonise George Pell, I remember them.
I am one of those men
I went to her book event
She shook my hand
This week she checked in on me to see how I was
As a result of all this bullshit she now has inherited some of our demons

No words are adequate. All I can say is that your bravery is to be saluted. 💕

I preferred a similar fate to Osama bin Laden.

Give Pell a casket and throw him to the sea

Or having now being buried in an unmarked grave like fellow rock spider Jimmh Saville.

His funeral happened a couple of hours ago apparently, happily no one really in tbe Aus main stream media gives a **** though.

I actually don't dislike Ross Lyon, I just think he's grossly overrated as a coach. I don't know enough about George Pell as I am not religious, believing religion to be violent, irrational and intolerant. It ought to have a great deal on its conscience these past two thousand years no matter what religious path you choose to go down. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but people get pretty uptight about religious beliefs and come finals time we are all hypocrites as we pray to God for a Grand Final victory! I do wonder though if it's not the catholic church that is really on trial? There are some things about religion that even entirely normal and balanced people who do not believe chemtrails are made by Jewish dragons think are true. Just the mention of George Pell's name is a trigger for vitriolic debate, Vitriol and name-calling, often in the absence of any logical argument, have increasingly become the norm in the past ten years on many contentious subjects. I wish Ross Lyon all the luck in the footy world, he's gonna need it. As for George Pell, I was more upset at the death of Jeff Beck.
an interesting view.

never a dull post from you

When the last pope was elected there was a pic of a massive heal of priests at the election.

I thought to myself each time a pope gets elected you would have the biggest concentration if paedos per sq m in the world at that point

Well, no point just making small talk on some of these things, I try and look outside the box instead of just walking blindly into a subject. (I see a lot of that over on the politics and society page) Not everyone will agree and I often find myself changing my mind if the evidence presents itself to the contrary.
Lyon has a lot to prove and Pell doesn't have to prove anything anymore, but were those who were angered by him angrier with the Catholic church itself? I reckon so. Ross Lyon has to find a new sort of game plan at the Saints than he's ever found before. My experience of watching footy tells me he'll be still looking for it at the mid-season BYE.
My religious experience is not as good other than I went to Sunday school as a child and my mother was of the faith, I did study it a bit in school and I thought the stories were great, pure fantasy of course, but I still like biblical films and who doesn't like a good sword and sandal picture? However, I grew up and now believe Life of Brian is the greatest biblical film of them all! (This view didn't go down well with my mother one little bit)
I have never been convinced any of it was ever real and discovered the whole gist of evangelical Christianity is that they like you and want you to hang out with them in heaven someday. Some of them are just more terrible than others at expressing their feelings.
Pell will never be able to answer his critics ever again.
If I had the choice though, I would prefer talking football to Ross Lyon, (he might convince me?) than George Pell trying to tell me all about a flood that couldn't possibly have happened or why he couldn't get a game at Richmond?

Described as a "faithful servant" at his funeral my first thought was that the better analogy was the Band's Unfaithful Servant which Robertson wrote as he watched hard drugs and alcohol destroy his band mates, Pell was the church's unfaithful servant.

So if every attendee at last year's gf were Catholic priests, only 5,000 would have been monsters? Awesome.

George Pell, no great loss to humanity

Guess it just demonstrates the goal of the Catholic Church. He faithfully protected them at all costs.

But not to their benefit I would say, he's put them on the wrong side of almost every culture war issue in Australia over the last thirty years. He put his personal conservatism and lust for power ahead of perhaps a modern church's best interests.

The master politician. He identified how he could use this to his advantage and further his meteoric promotion, that would end a few short steps away from the papacy.

The defence that he was a ‘faithful servant’ inadvertently perpetrating outrages, as he sought to further the aims of the Catholic Church, is utter nonsense.

Pell’s appalling treatment of rape victims, and their families, was certainly not doing God’s work. The role of a Catholic chaplain is to focus on the total person, providing emotional, pastoral and spiritual support. “Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19).

They were known, thats the problem. Many of the 'other 28' you example would have known about it, & said nothing. the central office, would have known. They would have been 'moved about' to other schools. Thats how disgusting & obscene the protectors of the catholic corporation were/are.

Same applies to the other scum organisations. Not just the catholic church. Wataboutism doesn't apply.

Imagine if the church were a corporation. They would have been sued into bankrupcy.
