Will the ability for the PS3 to play blueray disks give it a major advantage because games for 30gb disks instead of 8gb.

In 5 years will the XBOX 360 not be competitive becuase the game written will not be of the same quality?

thanks

Yes, it is a big advantage. Blu-ray can hold up to 50gb on a dual layer disc, and 25gb on a single layer disc though. Sony and Microsoft have differing opinions on console lifespans. Microsoft will pump out a new console every 3 or 4 years in an effort to gouge as many gamers as possible, Sony's consoles have a 7 year lifespan at a minimum.

Once we see developers really get the hang of developing for the PS3 we will see its power and storage advantages come into play. Late this year and certainly into next year the quality gap on games between the 2 system will be evident.

you guys obviously haven't heard of compression >,>

Dual layer DVDs are more than spacious enough for videogames in the current gen

The only reasons for the huge amount of space are

1)bragging rights: my dick is bigger than your dick

2)High definition movies - and even then the extra space is more a luxury than anything else as shown by the efforts of the warez scene in using x264 to compress 1080p movies into dual layer dvd size.

If you own a PS2....how often do you use the dvd player?

If Bluray ever reaches mass market penetration......think about how low the prices for a player will drop to.

Can you explain the part in bold a little more please. I guess what I want to know is if I d/l one of these HD files from say Torrentbytes which gives me great speeds is it generally in an ISO type format or as an mpg/avi I can dump onto my PS3 and play at 1080p?

If it is an ISO type file what media do I burn it to in order to keep the 1080p and what hardware is it playable on?

Lastly, do I need a particular media player in order to watch these on my pc/media centre to tv?

Thanks in advance as I know its slightly off topic!

DVDs will not be enough for games this generation, and thats a fact. Have a look around at what developers are saying about this issue. High definition movies are more than just 1080p picture, what about the audio? You might aswell upscale dvd quality picture if you aren't worried about HD sound.

I heard rumor that the developers of GTA IV had complained about how HD DVD discs are too small for the game (early on in development), but they somehow managed to fit the game in. However there has been word that GTA IV plays much better on PS3.

But I can not confirm.

Oh, and PS3 will start to dominate at the end of '08/start of '09.

Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar, has already stated he's annoyed with the design of the 360, primarily relating to the fact it runs on 9gb dvd's, and doesn't have a HDD as standard. He said he can't see how the next Grand Theft Auto game can be on 360.

for a while people were predicting Metal Gear solid 4 would end up on 360 as well as PS3, but because of the lack of disc space it couldn't be achieved.

And BR's are actually up to 50 gb.

The game DOES play much better on PS3. But the 360 doesn't use HD-DVD's, it uses regular DVD's. Compared to Blu-Ray they may as well be using cartridges.

But I can not confirm.

I can. I've got a 360 and a PS3. The PS3 version is hands down a better game.

It has already started.

The game DOES play much better on PS3.

Doesn't. 360 version is much more demanding on the hardware, running at a full 720p with 2x Anti Aliasing. PS3 could not handle these requirements, runs at a lowly 640p and still suffers from framerate issues. The dev team had to fudge the lack of any AA with some blur effects. PS3 apologists seem happy to go with this. It's surprising R* didn't go with a Wii version of GTA IV, if they were going to dumb it down for the PS3 audience anyway

Do you need a bluray drive to play Crysis?

enough said >,>

Face it, Sony were trying to pawn off their Bluray technology to take over the movie watching market. Gamers therefore got stuck with a first generation technology....

ie: a slow arse bluray drive.

Why do you think it takes so long for some PS3 games to load after you put it into the drive?

Its installing the game into the harddrive.

If they were going to follow the route as a glorified pc and focus on HD gaming....... they might as well have stuck with dvd9 and saved the consumers a few hundred dollars.

ehhh... don't have a PS3 to test it on but.... >,>

apparently the PS3 doesn't have a problem with the x264 codec itself......but hates the matroska container...... am I losing you?

In simpler terms..... most of the hd content you download have an extention .mkv.... yeah PS3 hates that.

but you can use a program called MKV2VOB to change the container to something more appetising for this picky gourmand. Use google....there are plenty of guides.

Now the 720p content works great..(ie no loss of quality, relatively quick converting time).... but unfortunately atm the 1080p stuff has to be encoded in a certain profile for it to convert properly (leads to loss of quality, long trancoding times and significantly larger file size).

That means it won't work well in about 80 percent of the 1080p x286 encodes circulating around in the internet.

To get the file onto your PS3 you either have to stream it using a program like Tversity (google for a guide) or with an external hard drive...... which can be abit annoying because there is a 4gb limit on the fat32 file system (look at the MKV2VOB guides on how to split the files).

As for using your Pc....... you need a reasonably fast computer to play hd x264 content. Don't remember the specific minimum specifications but google for "core avc" to help your computer out.

Its not free......but there are ways around that *cough cough* >,>

you can use a program like media player classic to play the files.

Strange that every single review of the game says the PS3 version does in fact run better, and looks better despite the resolution difference.....

There's others as well, but that's enough to prove you wrong. 360 was lead console, and is how the game is meant to be. I played the PS3 version after a session on the 360, the softness and blur was painful on my eyes.

midori knows what he is talking about. 8-9GBs is a LOT of game, piles of assets. A game with the scale and detail of GTAIV only took up 6.
As has been pointed out, the read speed on the BD wedged into the PS3 is slower than the DVD on the 360.

Have dl'd mkv2vob so will use that to convert some 720p stuff and check it out on the ps3.

Cheers for the heads up. Been doing some research based on your info and I now have a much better understanding of things.

Worked a treat on 720p. Am getting a 1080p file to test it on now. There is heaps of content out there.....could be time to increase the size of the ps3's hard drive for more storage, either that or look for a bigger external drive.

Poor point to try and make. No you don't a BR disc. But you at least need a hard drive. 360 has neither a hard drive or a blu-ray, and is restricted entirely by disc space.

If it comes down to it, they will just release games for HD equipped 360 SKUs anyway (80+% of them).

There is no way R* will release a GTA and not put it on 360, sales figures are too important.

No, you have missed the point completely. I'm not saying anything pro-360 in particular.

Its anti-"bluray is needed in this gen"

Look at Crysis. 6 gig in size compressed in the DVD.......about 12 gigs when you install the game. (and this is not optimised for consoles but a bloated PC system)

Are PC gamers complaining about the lack of a bluray drive in their hobby? No way.... they're like pigs in mud. They have had HD gaming for a long time now........screw 1080p....... they can go way beyond that resolution.

Look at how cheap harddrives are .....a probably 10th generation technology versus a slow arse first generation bluray drive THAT IS SLOWER than the dvd drive of the xbox 360.

Thats right....... its so slow that some developers have resorted to using redundant data on disc to help reduce loading time.

How stupid is that.....putting the same data in multiple places on the disc because the drive speed is too slow. How is that more advantageous than a dvd drive?

What sony has designed is a glorified pc......look at the long installation time for many games. 20 MINUTES for Devil may cry 4 LMAO

Face it. Sony would have been better off leaving the bluray drive out all together.....maybe let it mature as a movie platform for several years and release it in their next console. It would have prevented Nintendo from taking the initiative and it would have saved consumers hundreds of dollars.

It was only their greed in taking over the HD movie market that drove their decision......not dedication to gaming.

Ok, in that regard I agree. The BR isnt' a neccessity - as long as their is a hard drive - but would you agree that EITHER a BR Drive or a Hard Drive is a neccessity in the current gen?

i.e. relying strictly on reading-only a DVD-9 is pretty close to obsolete.

well, if you are talking about xbox360......... it might be better depending on the type of game.....but it doesn't seem to have disadvantaged it yet. Smart developers work around the limitations.

They can easily make use of it in the future if needed. (they'd probably have to work out some sort of rebate system for ppl who don't have one.....but harddrives are cheap as chips). If I'm not mistaken .......... some games already do use the hard drive.

I wouldn't say it is a necessity but it might be helpful to developers.

The blu-ray is a useless piece of technology for a gaming system.

For a media system it was smart. A shame really that the PS3 is supposed to be a gaming system.
