The other day the train was fully loaded, I had a free seat next to me and not one person chose to sit next to me, despite 20-30 people still standing. I couldn't help but laugh about that, It's not like I'm a dero or anything. I dress neat and respectable, I hardly look intimidating.

People only sit near me if there are no spare seats left. I don't care about perception about the way i dress (dressed as though it is summer gear including in winter - but very NEAT), i don't smell.... i can't help being ugly :p. One thing i can't avoid is being ugly :( :D.

All they need is one security guard on every cart and that would restore peoples confidence travelling on public transport.
It might restore confidence but I bet it would also cause a public uproar when the train fares are jacked up to cover the cost of having security guards on every cart across dozens of trains.

Hmmm $1.53 by train vs $16.50 by car. 110KM trip, half country half city.

would an increase really cause a problem?

Secondly would this result in extra users taking public transport?

I'd say so. It would mean a shit load of extra security staff to hire, or they contract that service out to a security company for them to handle. Either way it's a hit on their books, so to keep the shareholders happy and profits flowing, they would have to increase fares to cover the extra expense.

But really, how much difference is one or two security officers per cart going to make? What power would they really have if people started playing up? I don't see them doing much. The real problem is that the law is so piss weak that it doesn't deter dodgy behaviour. That's why it's irrelevant how many officers and cameras you have.

fall asleep on public transport at the end of a night all the time.

****ing sucks dogs balls, especially if you're miles from home.

furthest i've woken up is liverpool station, which is about 30km from sydney central. fortunatley that was about 11am (must have gotten on at roughly 6 from memory) so there was plenty of trains to get me home.

worst was waking up at circular quay to a bus fully packed for morning peak hour, me passed out sprawled across the back seat. must have been letting off some horrendous farts cause the bus was packed except no one was on the backseat, or the row in front of me... classy indeed. and the bus changed routes on the way home which left me with about a 3km walk to finish it off.

On the contrary,

I can never get a seat in peace. I always have someone (usually a guy) plop down next to me ... and often do the stare thing where they try to read what I'm reading etc.

I hate it.

Catch the train 5 days a week for work. Its annoying, but I'm only adding 10m or so even if I'd drive - and I'm not paying $60 a week for parking in Adelaide. Usually its ok, get the 7am in so there's no derros, just a whole heap of tired commuters. Do wish people would smile more though.

So I'm on the train back and this really obnoxious Aboriginal woman is asking people for money and abusing a few passengers. Nothing out of line, just being loud and rude. Then she starts calling all white people racists, the c word etc. How we just continually rape her people.

Obviously, made the entire carriage really uncomfortable. Finally, someone spoke and told her to shut up. She didn't, if anything this made her worse. At some point she made her way down the carriage and started talking to some kid. What I'm going to assume was his mother stepped in, told her to calm down and leave the boy alone.

Now, I didn't see this, but a lot of people recoiled and gasped, apparently she spat on the kid. Really not cool. She walked off the train straight away, but a bunch of people went to the Adelaide metro folk at Mawsons to report it.

Guy on the train today might as well have had his headphones facing outwards from his ears. In fact I think I'll add "Apple headphones" to the Things That Shit Me thread.

Horrible shit this. Shouldn't have to put up with this type of thing. :(

When I arrived at uni the other day on my bike, there were a couple of ticket scabs writing out tickets to a couple of kids at the bus stop - It´s compulsive and I can´t help it but whenever I see them writing tickets I have to hurl abuse at them and tell them to get a real job (and to stop targeting students, who for the most part, are on shit wages or austudy)

Inbred oxygen theives... I like that one, will have to use that along with scabc·nt, which is my current favourite

Hahahaha Funny Posts Everyone.

This Happened Last Time I took the train.

A Guy who was speaking very loud and basically Going to everyone and chatting with them suddenly started Making up words to what it seems Like spanish/Italians. Every one that was Paying no attention to him left what ever they were reading or who ever they were talking to and Turned to Him. Hahaha The Guy who you could bet your Life That he was True Blue Aussie was trying to convince The ticket Inspectors That he Just arrived To australia Yesterday from Italy and Didn't know how to purchase a ticket. Didn't help when most The carriage Started laughing and one of the ticket Inspector was actually of Italian Background. The things People would do to Avoid a fine.

I have fare evaded for about 3 years, think I've only bought 1 whole ticket in that time :D silly inspectors will never catch me with my evasion tactics, saved a few grand as well :)

So much this, the sound leakage is incredible. It's as if they were engineered to sit as loosely in your ears as possible and also to exert the maximum amount of noise on your surrounds. Not to mention that they sound like utter shit (comparable to the two dollar pairs that you can get from asian superstores).

I just can't fathom how people can listen to their music with them.

I always have a little chuckle when I see that metro ad, insisting fare evading will be rubbed out.. Erm, no, it won't! :D Anyone that doesn't fare evade is a mug to be honest.

Or they just have a sense of social responsibility. Public transport is already subsidised to a massive degree, so you're not paying anywhere near the true value of the ticket anyway.

It's like getting free entry to a charity event and stinging out on the gold coin donation.

Was on the way home from Freo after a big night (post-thesis celebration), passed out and woke up at Midland station.

With wallet/watch?

Dont have a specific train story but I was walking near Perth station one night with my mate about 8 years ago going back to the car when we turned around to see about 20 Aboriginals following us. They started swearing and threatening to kill us etc. We turned around and told them they can have our wallets we just dont want any trouble. Then one of them said "we dont wont ya money wa want ta kill ya". My mate look at me and just said "run". So we turned and sprinted thorugh the streets with bottles smashing around us and this huge bunch of ferals trying to catch us. They got my mate but somehow he managed to get out the wrestle he was in but was left shirtless, and kept running. So here we were running through Perth for our lives. We stopped a security guard who radioed the police. He gave my mate an old white knitted jumper he had in his car. Looked ridiculous. The cops then came along, put us in the back of the paddy wagon and dropped us at the car!

For months after that I was s*** scared of going out at night.

Keep enjoying it while WE all pay for your free ride.

Don't be a joker -

Public transort should be a public service - Not a private, profit driven business...

If they really wanted to rub out fare evasion, bring back the ticket conductors (It'll also stamp out anti-social behaviour, without relying on ticket scabc*nt goons who didn't quite make the cut for the police)
