Very quiet on the previous 2013 thread. Looks an interesting comp in 2014 with new teams like Sandgate and Greater Springfield. Wonder how Zillmere will go having lost a lot of the old brigade from last years premiership?

We have them Friday night so I'll let you know. I have a feeling they will still be pretty strong. I have to think Wynnum will also be hard to beat this season.

We played Jimboomba last night at Sandgate and were pretty comfortable winners 98-46 enjoyed the game played in the right spirits, don't really know much about the other teams as its my first season in this comp.

A little surprised with the redbacks result. I thought they might be stronger this year. Great start for Sandgate. I like to see some more thirds teams in this comp. Zillmere were a little too good for us, but we will bounce back. Their team looked a little different from their premiership team last year.

Yeah Zillmere have lost all those guns from the year and we have picked up a few of them at Sandgate as they used to be Sandgate regulars...Zillmere now have an alliance with Mayne Tigers so the guys that aren't getting a run in the twos over there go and play for Zillmere...

Good comp to date with interesting results. Pretty even which is good for everyone. No real outright favourites, I don't think.

Not sure Uni's depth stretches to a 5th side, but as long as people get a chance to play it's all good.

Ladder is definitely taking shape. It is definitely an interesting fixture given that some teams have already played each other twice. We should have a clearer picture of who are the teams to beat by round 11 or so. However, Woodsmen and Wynnum look like the teams to beat?

Having played against Woodsmen and watched the boys play Wynnum, I'd have to say Wynnum were more impressive. Their spread was unbelievable. We're generally a pretty fit team, but Wynnum ran all over us.

In my opinion they're the strongest team we've played so far.

I've been to a few games of this league this year, always been a keen follower of Div 4 as there are some sneaky good players running around. Zillmere last year were as dominant as I've seen in any league, nobody got near them. I watch plenty of local footy and they would have been very competitive in the Div 2 Seniors comp last year against the likes of Yeronga, Coorparoo and Robina imo.

I live near the Moorooka ground and strangely the Sherwood/Woodsmen side seem to be playing home games there, can only assume its a lights issue as playing at Chelmer is like playing the backyard with the torch on. They seem a strong side this year, like they do every year. I think the proof will be in the pudding though, as they always struggle to hold a side together. Their best is probably the best, but when do you ever see it with those blokes?

I watched Wynnum vs Yeronga the other week and agree Wynnum looked every bit as strong as the Woodsmen, and Sandgate are a bit like the Woodsmen it seems. Have a cracking side one week, and then everyone disappears for a month! I watched them play the Woodsmen in Round 2, and both sides were full of old blokes - the standard was rubbish and I don't think either team had a bench! I think Saturday games do that to some sides in this league.

The more professional sides appear to be Springfield, Yeronga, Colly Park etc - all doing warmdowns after games and taking it quite seriously - while it seems that the better sides like Sandgate, Woodsmen and Wynnum just rock up, have a few beers, run around and just keep winning. Zillmere are a different outfit depending on whether Dickfos plays, Wynnum were always going to be strong given they dropped back 2 divisions.

Personally, from what I have seen. Sandgate look like the best side, followed by Woodsmen and Wynnum - with a significant gap beyond that. I know that makes no sense, given Woodsmen and Wynnum have both beaten Sandgate soundly - but Sandgate with their full compliment of guys looked very very strong when I saw them. Lots of guys from Zillmere's flag side last year.

Good players to watch in this league:

Jimboomba: tall bald bloke with great hands (Ryan?), 'Razor' and 'Watto'. That Watto bloke is mad as a cut snake, can play anywhere and teams find him hard to match up on.
Sandgate: Suitor, Widt, Forbes, Ludke (in fact they had a very strong full 22 when I saw them)
Woodsmen: Green, Dobson, 'Mika', #1 called 'Crab', #6 (Baker I think?) and that big bloke Tommo still runs around for them. They seem to have picked up a good CHF from Alex Hills as well and a little defender wearing #2 was good the other night for them.
Kenmore: Gilbert is a good player, I think they call him 'Killa'
Zillmere: Dickfos, Dickfos, Dickfos (and Fuller)
Collingwood Park: Hills and Saver, but Saver busted his shoulder
Yeronga: they seem to drop players back ocassionally, that Armstrong looks a good player - nobody else really of note. Some guys with nice long boots on them though.

None of the other teams have any standouts, though I suspect Springfield don't have long term plans to stay in this division - from what I saw the other night they haven't really embraced the 'culture' in this league and want to progress quickly, which they will do if they have the numbers and good on them. Standard in the QAFA A imo is lower than the top sides in QAFA B anyway, so they will be competitive if they move up a division, even as soon as next year.

who do you play for Phoenix?

I reckon Sandgate look quality, but can see your point.

We have a bit more depth this year, only really been short twice so far.

Next two weeks will test us, picked up a few injuries in past 2 weeks leaving us weak on Friday night and then following Friday night of a long weekend is always a struggle for numbers.

Played Springfield last week, they complained that we didn't have enough volunteers. I think they're in for a shock later on in the year when teams don't even have enough players some weeks!

Springfield. Personally played an absolute shocker against the Woodsmen, but it was a pretty good game really. Enjoyable contest and definitely gave us a good idea regarding how the best teams play.

Cheers,

Watched you blokes on Friday night against the Woodsmen.

Was a reasonable contest, but the Woodsmen just have too many old heads that really know how to play the game. On the odd occasion Springfield won the ball in the middle, the half back line from the Woodsmen dominated. #2, #4 and #25 across the Woodsmen defensive 50 were just too good for their opponents.

The big gun forward for the Woodsmen #26 also went off in the first couple of minutes which hurt their scoring power, and I noticed their speedy winer #21 wasn't playing.

Springfield looked like they have a solid foundation of fitness and a decent game plan, they just didn't have the class/talent that the Woodsmen had. Which shouldn't be a huge surprise, when you look through the teamsheet, Woodsmen have 5 or 6 ex QAFL/State League blokes who aren't that old.

Don't know about the other teams but down at wynnum stretching and ice baths are compulsory after training and games, personally I like the idea of a beer instead but.

I thought you guys dropped back from Div 2 because of a serious lack of numbers, and not being able to field a senior and a reserves side. But now you have almost enough numbers to have two sides ???
Because to play div 3, like we wanted, aflq demanded 50 registered players. God knows we tried but Was out of our hands in the end.
