QAFL 2024 season

this just QAFL or all the iterations of NEAFL, QAFL, Velocity Sports, Pineapple etc?

I recall Mayne, Labrador and Western Magpies being regularly thumped by 100+ (and a few 150s) in the 2001-2004 period or thereabouts.

Early days, but real prospect for Vultures to lose 18 games by 100+, I doubt thats ever happened?

There is a bloke on Twitter who runs an account called AFL_scorigami, in which he identifies how often a recent score has occurred in past AFL/VFL fixtures. It is completely trivial – but could offer a glimpse into the local code’s past. A few examples, and you’ll see what I’m on about:

Good question.

This represents all "QAFL level" results from 1904 to 2023 - so that's including QFL, QANFL, QAFL, QSFL, AFLQ, etc.

The only divergence is during the NEAFL Seasons of 2011 to 2015. During that time, I've recorded the NEAFL results, and the highest sole Queensland competition. So that latter comp includes AFLQ Premier Division (2011), SEQAFL Div 1 (2012-2013), and then back to QAFL (2014-2015).
Eventually, I'll get the "Pineapple Hotel Cup" division included in the database, covering 2000 to 2010 - and then comps from 2016 to present. I'm also close to having the SQAFA/BAFL First Division from 1970 to 1999 covered too.

The quick graph above was only for results with margins of 150+. I could take a look at 100+ too.

(In 1990, Caloundra - who were the Sunshine Coast Cool Cats the year before - played 16 games for 1 win and 15 losses. One loss was a forfeit. Of their losses, 9 were over 100 points - and 4 of those were over 200 points.)

I wasn't aware of that. Thanks, Chief :thumbsu:

Round 2 Results

(The Matter that’s Stuff)

Let’s keep running with this until people get sick of it. There were no negative responses to last week’s notes – but remember, if you’re not interested, then just ignore it.

A reminder also of the Twitter account, AFL_scorigami, which identifies how often a recent score has occurred in past fixtures is used as a “part inspiration” for this post:

Aspley 15-4-94 d Redland 12-16-88
Incredibly, in the 8,400+ previous results, this score has never occurred before. However, it does say a lot for accuracy in front of the posts. That’s the kind of score you would like to see in a Grand Final (no matter who is playing).

Broadbeach 13-14-92 d Labrador 8-12-60
This score has occurred once previously:
2012 R11: Surfers Paradise 13-14-92 d Sandgate 8-12-60

Morningside 21-17-143 d Maroochydore 9-9-63
This score has occurred three times previously:
1992 R19: Kedron Grange 22-11-143 d Coorparoo 8-15-63
2003 R18: Northern Eagles 21-17-143 d Redland 9-9-63
2018 R8: Broadbeach 22-11-143 d Wilston Grange 9-9-63

Wilston Grange 12-23-95 d Noosa 10-8-68
This score has occurred four times previously:
1965 R6: Kedron 13-17-95 d Windsor Zillmere 10-8-68
1975 R20: Kedron 12-23-95 d Mayne 10-8-68
1995 R14: West Brisbane 14-11-95 d Kedron Grange 8-20-68
2021 R3: Palm Beach Currumbin 14-11-95 d Noosa 10-8-68
The margin of 27 points is surprisingly frequent in these comps. It now moves into the third most frequent margin, having occurred 143 times.

Palm Beach Currumbin 33-20-218 d Mt Gravatt 7-3-45
This score has occurred once previously:
2012 R14: Brisbane Lions 34-14-218 d Mt Gravatt 7-3-45
This is the 135th time a team has kicked 30 goals or more in a game.

Surfers Paradise 13-10-88 d Sherwood 8-10-58
This score has occurred five time previously:
1936 Prelim Final: Mayne 12-16-88 d Valley 8-10-58
1989 R11: Southport 12-16-88 d Mayne 8-10-58
2010 R3: Redland 11-22-88 d Western Magpies 8-10-58
2014 R1: Southport 12-16-88 d Gold Coast Suns 9-4-58
2014 R16: Ainslie 12-16-88 d Sydney Hills Eagles 8-10-58 *
(* Bit of an oddity – but a legitimate result as part of the NEAFL competition.)

Quick snapshot of Margins 100 or more from 1904 to 2023

The peak years are 2003 (30), 2014 (27), 2012 (24), and 1990 (23). Bear in mind though that the years of 2011 to 2015 are skewed because there are two competitions included in the review (NEAFL and highest sole Qld comp).

Had to look twice because I was amazed that there was only 1 game in 2023 with a margin over 100 points.

Few Tips coming him ,,,all the same except Boops has tipped Sherwood ...
Anyone think Broadbeach will beat Redlands ,, they have a good record at the Redlands home ground .

Agree ,, but tipsters take thought about the Redlands vs Broadbeach game ,, if Broadbeach get a few of these guns that have missed the first 2 games ,, well look out
I paused for a moment over 4 of them actually. Broadbeach for sure, but even Maroochydore v Grange, possibly even Sherwood v Morningside (I think both seem stronger than one last year and I just dunno by how much), and yes I even stopped for a moment to think about how long Aspley can be chosen without considering an upset. But eventually yes I went with the same as most others.

Tips
PBC by 62
RVP by 23
Aspley by 34
Grange by 52
Labrador by 113
Morningside by 11

Pretty straight forward this week, pondered over the RVP vs Broadbeach but at home and with Broady slightly undermanned should go the way of the home side. Interesting to see Sherwood vs Morningside with the numbers saying the #1 contested team vs #1 uncontested. If Sherwood can make it a dog fight coupd be a close game.
