Maybe getting rid of colts in other divisions might have had an impact on young men coming through Still Me.

No doubt. Even though a number of kids drop out as they finish youth (and/or school) this has been exasabated by the fact some lads aren't physically/mentally ready for senior footy after U17s and don't have the desire to move to QAFL Colts level as they don't see a future at that level.

Unfortunately, not sure there will ever be a happy medium...BUT from my experience the EVEN numbered age groups (12, 14, 16, 18) at whichever clubs could field a side lead to more participants at senior level (no data to back that up).

think the age group change makes sense personally

if you're still at school, you are eligible for youth footy, if you're not - then you're not.

Lots of other issues, but I think the age group change was spot on.

Limiting clubs to 2 x u17 teams though, I agreed with it in principle, but in practice its a disaster.

How has limiting qafl clubs to 2 under 17’s been a disaster?

It's not limiting QAFL clubs, it's limiting all clubs.

I agreed with it to start with, assuming kids would be happy to pack up and play elsewhere, but instead they are just giving the game away instead.

We are experiencing it on multiple fronts. We were caught off guard a little and 4 x u15 teams, which didn't really go in into 2 x u17 teams.

So while we are dealing with that issue, we are also now limiting our numbers in u13 and u15 to prevent future problems, and finding that the kids we turn away in those age groups also just choose not to play. Don't think that's the outcome anyone is looking for.

End of the day, there is no right way to do it, but it just means we can't cater for every level of footballer, as the great thing about 15s for us last year is that every kid could play at the level that suited them. Now the 'lesser talents' are forced into higher divisions which impacts their enjoyment.

There is this grand assumption by all who put policies into place around kids, that preventing them from playing somewhere is going to mean they will automatically go somewhere else. maybe at adult level that occurs?

Unfortunately many people just don't read studies as to why kids play sport - and the #1 reason in all studies is to be with mates and have fun - winning actually ranks quite low on the scale. So if a kid can't play at a club with his / her mates then what makes anyone think that the natural progression is to the next local club.
Obviously convenience comes into as well when parents have to drive. A limit of 2 sides per age group is / was always going to reduce numbers sadly. On the other hand I think clubs that have 4 sides that also have people on phones trying to coax kids to their club to get a 5th side is pathetic. Surely clubs can work together and spread the love a little bit?

In my experience clubs do work together. I’ve heard of clubs recruiting for their Div 1 team, but never lower divisions. Surely that’s not happening.

Huh and spoke. Had a young up and comer tell me that it’s supposed to work that way. All the good kids get drawn in centrally to the state league and the lesser lights spin out to satellite clubs.

Great theory from someone with little understanding of human behaviour.

I highly doubt any junior club anywhere is genuinely and actively recruiting players, whether it be for D1 or otherwise.

they just naturally go

a) where their mates are
b) where the talent is
c) nearest club
d) where the academy tells them

Outside the odd parent being a bit overzealous at some sort of rep training or carnival, surely nobody has time to chase kids to change clubs.

yes - agree. Rarely does. Sometimes it does but not organically, requires people to get on phones and coerce blokes to do so.

Broadbeach announce 2 more recruits ,, one is Mat North from Palmy last season and victoria before ,, good player ,, good recruit . And a guy from Perth playing with Peel Thunder reserve grade ,,
Have picked up some good recruits and announced some re- signings ,, but no more info as to who we have actually lost .
So one cannot say at this moment will Broady be more competitive

Rolls and Brock Aston back to Morningside are good ins. Harry Arnold also aligning with Morningside but will probably play a lot of VFL at Lions.

Plus a few nice interstate recruits balance out what they lost. Some good kids coming through from Colts premiership as well. Think they will be competitive again but looks like everyone has gone up a notch.

Reckon Maroochydore and Palmy massive improvers and Broadbeach to bounce back.

Maybe Redlands and Grange slide as heard nothing from either camp.

Who has Morningside lost from the premiership team?

I know this is QAFL but Southport looking to get a huge redevelopment of their ground to hold around 8000-10 000 people. Will be the biggest ground for a stand alone VFL club. Plus a whole range of other upgrades.
Reckon the North Port oval,Port Melbournes home ground would have had 2 to 3 times that attendance in the past! But obviously a powerhouse Southport who do a great job in the VFL!

Rumour has it that Sherwood vice-captain from this season Jack James is headed to rival club Mt Gravatt. Big out if true and could leave a hole in the Maggies side…

Will he be 5 points?

TSL is 4 points. Though TSL also no longer exists, so will be interesting how that works with points system

That would be a big surprise. Mount Gravatt have been quick to post their ressies level / d3 level signings so far so why are they keeping this one so secret?

Doesn't he have 3 brothers? Might have got all 4 of them on the promise of playing Senior QAFL footy together.

Would be a big out for the Magpies though.
