Surprised to see this mess hasn't been mentioned yet. Anyone up there who is affected by this, or knows people who are? Pretty awful stuff from what I've seen. I saw the photos from Toowoomba and the floods were pretty incredible. Hope the toll isn't too high from that, although it seems like there must be thousands of people around the state without a home now.

Hopefully the rains will ease up and people can start the recovery.

Heart goes out to anyone affected by this and it is a terrible situation. Hope the water eases and the death toll is not to high, at the moment 8 people have been killed and 72 are missing.

Some of the news footage was amazing with the massive wall of water roaring down some main streets completely wrecking everything in it's path and sweeping houses away.

My parents lived in Toowoomba for years and I went to university there. I still have a lot of friends there. They've been struggling with low water levels for years. This is irony in the most terrible way.

Living in the headwaters of the Stanley River, which is the main tributary of Somerset Dam. There is an immense amount of water in the region here and there has been around 150mm upstream in the past 18 hours. This becomes an issue because Somerset is already at 150%, and when they release from there, it goes into Wivenhoe, which is around 150% too. Everything released from Wivenhoe ends up going through Brisbane, which is where all of the water that flogged into Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley will end up as well. Brisbane will end up with much more water than they realise.

The footage of what is happening at Toowoomba, Grantham, Gatton, Withcott etc is awfully distressing, it is hard to imagine this level of destruction so close to home. I strongly urge everyone to donate to the flood relief, whether its Rockhampton, Dalby, Chinchilla or Toowoomba that receives your donation, they desperately require any assistance that can be given.

It's been heartbreaking to watch the news reports. My mother (who isn't in the best of health) lives in Hervey Bay, about 30 odd ks out of Maryborough and access to the area is cut off west, north and south. She is fine and not worried as has a house/freezer full of food and lives on very very high ground. My brother in Brisband and his family, just back from their o/seas hols, are twiddling their thumbs waiting for access to the Sunshine Coast to see how their family holiday home at Coolum is fairing then go up to visit mum. Frustrating but at least they're well not like those poor people who were swept away. Mum was telling me yesterday of friend of friends who were there in Hervey Bay for Xmas hols and can't get home til the roads are open. I'd say they are among thousands of people who are in the same boat, no pun intended.

Where I am we've had rain more or less on and off since the 1st November tho there have been some dry days - thank heavens - and where I live my house is on a very slight slope and the soil is sandy so the water just runs away.

p.s. you all should have hear my old mum going off about the people who blocked dam constructions in the past around that area..though I daresay she's not the only one and there is going to be major finger pointing going on for some time, I think those "dam blockers" are the same who don't believe in back burning in the bush.

Yesterday it took a huge turn for the worst and some of the video footage from Toowomba where there was a rush of water that looked like a tsunami take cars and anything in its path down the main street, was a scary site. 8 confirmed dead from yesterday and 72 people unaccounted for. As the water moves down to Brisbane, more towns are flooding and are being told to evacuate to higher grounds. I heard that one town had 400ml in 24 hours, that is a huge amount of water.
Hopefully those people that are unaccounted for are found and that the rain stops.

Why are people still staying in their houses? Haven't they learnt from the bushfires you can't **** with nature?

Because they either had no warning or 5 to 10 mins at best in this particular event.

This event is a lot different to the ones that in some instances had days of warnings, hence it being called a FLASH flood.

But there are floods near you. Within 200km. Wouldn't you think, "oh, Toowoomba has been flooded, that's a good sign that floods will probably arise here." That's what would be going through my head, and I would start packing.

It's not like you can stay home and "fight" the floods either.

You can fight floods to a certain degree, it's called building levees around your property and sandbagging.

If there were floods somewhere in Perth would you start packing?

I just thought I'd ask since you threw in the random 200km, it's roughly that far from Perth to Bunbury isn't it?

I don't think the flood waters evoke the same sort of - not sure of the correct word here - perhaps terror as the fire inferno from the bushfires.

This looks like it will end up worse than the fires :(

Darwin would be my guess. They have some pretty big cyclones up there.

You're probably right with floods not evoking the sort of terror that fires do even though water is a lot more destructive.

As for Darwin, maybe after the fact they were, but before Cyclone Tracy actually hit it was thought that there wouldn't be a direct hit so everyone was safely tucked in bed awaiting the arrival of Santa.

Stupid question . . .

I'm assuming Toowoomba and other towns in QLD have storm water drains? Aren't these drains supposed to take the water out to the sea?

If so, why is it taking so long for the water to piss off?
