Quigley's 2008 Mock (Warning Very Long)

All some people can do is whinge - bitch -whinge - bitch.

This is a astronomic effort Quigley. I commend you and your endeavour. You must have spent alot of time on this.

Your selections and positioning's are different. I cannot imagine some of your picks going so high, or converesly, so low.

Yet importantly, I think the most valuable attibute to your work is the player profiles and research.

I think after the draft, many people will visit this thread to read your analysis on the kids.

Once again, well done. Its appreciated :thumbsu:

Yep, its near impossible to pick where every player is going to go. All it takes is for one club to make a suprise selection and the whole draft changes. Plus, how on earth are we meant to know what selectors are thinking.

The brilliance in this mock draft is the information on each player. At worst i have a much better knowledge now on each player...and as i go through the picks Collingwood might take, im going to use Quigley's player analysis as a rough guide in making my opinion.

An absolutely brilliant effort with a lot of research.

Rolfe early i dont mind. Its some decent thinking outside the square. Brings a name up which isn't highlighted often. Its the late talls which i dislike.

It would be far more likely for Fremantle to look at Both Hayden Ballantyne and Liam Anthony with late picks.

I prefer the idea of going for some longterm tall prospects late in the draft, and getting a player like Trengove who can play KPP and second ruck is a much better idea than going pure ruckman. A developing pure ruckman on the rookie list would be a good move too.

Surely 2-3 good midfield prospects in the early stages of the draft is enough to add in one year. Especially given the emergence of Ibbotson and Palmer last year, and promising signs from Hinkley.

for christ sake dont limit walters to a small forward, the guy is a midfielder, hes tough, and has a razor left boot, can even play half back like he did at champs.
i see him as a danny kerr type mid, maybe not as good in close, but much better by foot, i'd love him at 11, just think hes a lovely footballer. Whoever gets him will get a great little player, who's bottom aged, possibly still growing, fans of the team that drafts him will soon forget where he was picked and just be happy they have a little jet on their hands

If Melbourne got Watts (will be a superstar despite your negatives), Yarran (most naturally gifted player in draft) and Mckernan (could be a dominant CHF). Then they have had the best draft ever.

If the Swans pass on Yarran I'll be devistated.
Our '01 draft of Ablett, Bartel, Stevie J and Kelly might have something to say about that
But that would be an incredible pick up for melbourne and hopefully drag them up the ladder in coming years.
Well done Quigley on a thorough and comprehensive draft, although I don't really agree with a lot of your picks for geelong, we have stokes, chapman, stevie as competant small forwards, we probably could do with another good kpp and im still undecided on shuey vs. strauss.
Having said that it's good to see some less talked about names coming through and being placed where there deserve to be.

What a terrific effort to get the mock up Quigley. A fantastic read. I think this is the 3rd mock IIRC that Carlton have selected Hurley and Rockcliffe. I'd be reasonably pleased if this happened come draft day.

Addresses our needs, and we get two pretty special talents.

Just one strange point, in this mock Quigley you rated Cornelius as going with a first round selection. Then I look at your drafting for Brisbane in the Official Mock draft and you've had the chance to select him and instead you've selected Beams and Tom Hill.

Just wondering how he managed to slip passed two of your later selections?

I'm not Quigley, but he did say in the official phantom that he took Beams because 1) he's got a feeling that's what'll happen on draft day and 2) it addresses a need. He took Hill because it was his intent to take a ruck in the 3rd round.

Besides Brisbane's greatest area of depth is in key position players. The midfield has been neglected in recent years and the ruck depth is non-existent. Ziebell and Beams with the first 2 picks, followed by a ruck addresses the list's needs.

BC is absolutely right. I think Brisbane's strength is its key position forward depth. Firstly we have Brown and Bradshaw who are a very strong one two combination and backing them up are our first rounders in two of the last three years in Clark and Henderson. Henderson has looked very good kicking some big bags in the reserves and playing a fair few games as a first year key position and not looking out of his depth at all. Clark also is very talented and if he can keep on the park will be a very dangerous player. There is also a third player who came through this year in Clousten who I am very bullish on and expect him to play a major role next year in a roving half forward capacity. He started out in defence this year but moved forward and formed an unstoppable combination with Henderson in a few games they played together.

So with 2 stars and three good young talents I had to go with need early. If I had been picking for virtually any other team I would have had no problem taking Cornelius early and certainly in the second or third round where he fell to.

by the way, thanks for a magnificent read. look forward to your end of year review.
I picked them in the order so my top 5 mids are:

1. Rich
2. Ziebell
3. Sidebottom
4. Swift
5. Robinson

Hartlett would be in most people's top 5 mids I realise that.

On the end of year review I have been a bit slack but it will give me something to do after the draft.

Both you and I have Ashley Smith going at 35.

He's another who I feel could be a sneeky late first rounder. He almost has the same kicking action as Peter Matera, the penertration is there, as is his pace by foot.

I think most clubs will back themselves in to boost his workrate, and personally I think he could develop into a topline mid.

My gut feeling says definite top 25, probable top 20.

Great Effort Quigley.
Sidebottom at Essendon at 5 is realistic- I chose Mckernan I just think they will shape the top ten a little although you have broken the mould and gone for Ziebell at 4. Did you consider Vickery to Essendon at 5?
I would prefer Trengove but I think you are correct and Essendon will go small at 5. I dont think they would pass on hill at 23 but props for your work and noone is an expert on an event that hasnt even occured yet!
Well done:thumbsu:

Finally some love for Peter Rolfe - have seen a lot of this guy and rate him highly (although perhaps he won't go as high as pick 24.) I can't believe he is often completely left out of consideration. He has all the tools and as you say, can start his career as a contributing crumbing forward but has the potential to be a solid midfielder once he develops further. Great work mate. :thumbsu:

Has anyone? In any phantom where i have seen him go past Port, I don't think i've even seen him considered by Essendon.

If this Hill at pick 3 stuff has any merit, then you would think that from what Choco has said that they'll take Rich and Essendon would have the option of taking Vickery. Based on Essendon's ruck stocks, you'd have to think that he'd be a pretty strong chance

Good Work Quigley great effort and I think could be close what it will look like on draft day.

Difference is fine and good. Thing is with Richmond being burned in the past going with the risky upside, I don't think they'd choose Swift over Hartlett if they're going mids. A savage writeup about Hartlett I noticed, have a look at TEFLUA or something who loves the guy to bits. Shows the variety of opinions. It'll be interesting to see who is right, who goes first. Some people have Ziebell slipping to eight and he's definitely in my eight players I would love coming to tigerland.

Quigley, great effort, great detail and outline of your reasoning.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Also, agree 100% with what you say, if you're going to be wrong it may as well be based on your opinion. The proliferation of phantom drafters would do well to bear this in mind.

Top effort.
