As with the comment earlier about SEN, five years ago I would not have believed I’d be listening to Triple M today.

You want analysis and banter. You get more of the latter in Triple M but still some of the former.

ABC is beyond saving I think, and it isn’t just the cricket. Offsiders is nothing like it used to be and their NRL coverage has gone backwards.

The only listenable mainstream sport they have now is the AFL, and even that was better 10 years ago.

Jim Maxwell was horrible yesterday.

Two top order Windies batsmen were bowled, and it took poor old Jim a few seconds to realise what was going on….then he called it in a nonchalant “Oh he’s knocked him over…well there you go…” kind of way.
Thank god they have Ian Bishop. Cooper and Clark are alright as something different. Carl Hooper I love but he doesn't sound as thrilled to be there as he did last summer.

ABC Grandstand was best when it Katich, Rogers and Nannes are their special comments guys I reckon.
It was still good then.

The Stackpole, Lawson, Alderman, O’Keefe and Hughes combination is still the best I can remember.

Did he leave the ABC to coach Pakistan or was he on after that?
Never hear from him now.

I don't know if he left the ABC to coach Pakistan but he was part of their team for a long time after he finished coaching Pakistan. He was on Macquarie radio a few years ago and didn't pronounce Marnus's surname as 'Laba-shane' instead he called him 'Laba-Skuh-knee'.

That's how it's pronounced in Afrikaans which is technically correct.

But not how Marnus himself likes it pronounced. It's a bit disrespectful to pronounce someone's name differently to how they want it pronounced IMO.
Didn't they go with "rhymes with champagne" because they gave up trying to get people to do it correctly?

Nope. I remember one time where he was talking up Dom Thornley for the test side.
I remember one time on the old ABC forum, I asked if any Victorian batsmen were close to selection for the Test squad and he mentioned Laurie Harper who had retired several years earlier.

Yes, all three could fill in during 'dead time' with interesting anecdotes, stories and observations.

Now much of it seems to be up to Jim who is becoming quite insufferable. As soon as his voice dominates the air I can almost hear reddish-brown autumn leaves billowing about in the commentary box.

He spent an entire series last summer calling Jermaine Blackwood "Jerome" and asking why the big fella Ricky Cornwell wasn't playing.

Most of this summers ABC broadcast has been based around celebrating Jim Maxwell's 50th year of broadcasting. It's a great achievement but it's obvious that there is no one at the ABC who is big enough or pays enough attention to tell him his job performance is not up to standard. Probably not worth doing so anyway.

Cricket has passed him by and he seems resentful of that fact. He goes around each summer for the nostaglia hit and it's because it's what he's always done.

I've been an ABC cricket listener my entire life but I've transitioned to SEN and it's been a good decision. I only really go to the ABC now if SEN are having an interview during play (which they love to do occasionally and it means you have NFI what is happening in the match).
Good post.

Maxwell has been giving me the smash hits for a long time and he has plumbed new depths this summer. The 50 year anniversary wankfest has made it nearly unlistenable.

There are a few redeeming features of the ABC coverage that are keeping me going, at least for now. I don't mind Nannes, Clark and Mitchell and Ric Finlay's stats are usually interesting.

When I'm in the car the only station that has good enough sound quality is Triple M but their commentary team is probably the worst.

Merv Hughes is proof of the saying, 'Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt'.

Jim Maxwell has been wheeled out for the ODI today on the ABC. He made a perfect start by having the wrong batsman facing the first ball.

ABC only seemed to have the two summarisers in Jaques and Stuart Clark. Wonder if someone pulled out last-minute or if it's cost-cutting. They did have someone at all three Shield games though.
