Not sure how it's at all tragic, the bloke has had a reasonably lengthy AFL career earning himself a stack of cash along the way, wanting to go home for the benefit of his family is only understandable.

The reason it's tragic, is that he's currently in career best form after re-inventing himself as a rebounding defender. He was VERY close to getting delisted from the Pies at the end of the 2010 season, with his career at the crossroads His main issue was the huge drop in pay the Pies put on the table, which he thought was an insult given how well he did in 2011. But the Pies had no choice because of the Salary cap squeeze, thanks mainly to Thomas and Pendlebury's management who aggressively used the GWS situation as contract leverage. The situation now is he's probably going to be without a club to go to. Would have thought 250k at the Pies was better than nothing. Perhaps he was given assurance from one of the Freagle teams prior to quitting the Pies. Who knows. Anyway, it hasn't worked out well for Leon. He deserves better than that. Seems like he's received some very poor advice.

He'll get picked up in the pre-season draft surely. .. and I suspect that whoever does pick him up would already agreed to do so prior to him quitting the Pies. ..

You'd think someone would pick up Leon, although don;t think he;s the hardest of trainers, think he was a fave with Mick, why wouldn't Weagles rookie him?

Anyways, considering AA last year, a waste of talent

Yep, can't see Leon taking 60k per year for a rookie spot at age 31 years. The main reason he left the Pies was that he was "insulted" by their 200-250k pa offer. Although getting away from Nathan Buckley might have been another factor.

12 months with FIGJAM might see all their 2012 out of contract players walk out :)

Yep. Buckley was pretty much despised by the player group while he was captain. And his dislike of Malthouse is well known, plus several assistant coaches wanting out after Malthouse left was no coinicidence either. Pendlebury's 1 year contract "committement" was a little insightful wasn't it. Buckley taking over as coach was probably not the main reason why Leon walked, but it certainly didn't help matters.

:)

You know, the funny thing is that Buckley never even made it into Malthouse's senior assistant coaching group. The highest he ever got was "Magnet Boy" on GF day. Everyone knows that Eade will be the Pies real coach in 2012. Buckley will be out front taking credit if things go right, and spreading the blame if it goes pear-shaped.

:)

Leon didn't leave for the "go home" factor.
He left because Collingwood offered him $250k 1 year deal.
He had to take a $100K pay cut from his previosu contract, wasn't happy and tossed it in.
He stuffed up, as he did it too late, once most clubs had their list management sorted for 2012.

So it will be the same situation Essendon has now. James Hird as the face and Bomber Thompson as the brains
