Hawks demolishing Geelong who were apparently the best team ever (just had to ask them) comes in 11th?

Hawks demolishing Swans rates so much lower than demolishing Weagles?

Collingwood needed 2 goes to win in 2010 but thats the 3rd best ?

Swans in 2012 should also be much higher up. They pushed through when Hawthorn choked.

Good to see you aren't biased towards your club.

Did you deliberately leave out 2020? Agree with your no.1. Though western bulldogs of 2016 were the worst, they were given such friendly treatment by the umps in a close game. And before you mention Richmond getting a good deal in '17, they won by 48 points, that 3rd quarter surge was always happening. Hawthorn in 2013 and 2008 a bit low. You also put Geelong 2022, the worst of the Geelong premiers, in 2nd.

Richmond 2020 was a weak one with the COVID-interrupted season and shortened quarters to put factors in it.

If you go by pure talent of the palyers, then the Geelong teams of 07-11 would be right near the top.

If you go by how the team played as a whole, then its hard to go past the only team that did b2b2b.

Geelong made 3 GFs in a row 07-09 but werent good enough to beat the hawks in 08 which knocked them down a rung compared to hawks 13-15 imo.

Sydney 2012 would be right near the top with richmond maybe slightly above.

Hawks 2008 are a rung below. The had the ability but werent able to back it up for a few years (due to multiple factors). It did include however the core of the 3peat team.

2020 richmond would be last due to compromised season. Sure they adapted the best, but it wasnt really the same game. Shorter quaters favoured certain team over others. That they were the reigning premiers probably gave them a greater advantage over less experienced teams due to the chaos of the year.

Collingwood 2010 would be 2nd last, just cos they couldnt win it on the first try and needed a second.

Bulldogs 2016 would be 3rd last, they had a great last 6-8 weeks of the season, but werent that great for the whole season and never got back to the same level of that purple patch. The other teams in the list had better consistency to be higher up the ladder at the end of the season.

The 21/22 GF teams are hard to evaluate relative to the other years as they have had less of a chance to back it up year after year.

1) Hawks 2013
2) Hawks 2014
3) Hawks 2015
4) Geelong 2007
5) Geelong 2009
6) Geelong 2011
7) Richmond 2019

9) Sydney 2012
10) Hawks 2008
11) West Coast 2018
12) Bulldogs 2016
13) Collingwood 2010
14) Richmond 2020

Excluded melbourne 2021 and geelong 2022 due to lack of data on their ability to get to the GF multiple years in a row.

Not bad but how could you have pies '10 2nd last when they were so dominant the whole year, high % and toppled both Cats/Saints that were premiership fancies (over several years). Also, you could argue that 2020 was the hardest year to win it with so much needing to go right.

Richmond teams all far too high...

Which other team won missing 3 all Australians? Eagles clearly the most talented.
Thrashed Richmond at home, beat Collingwood three times, twice at the G. Played the grand final at their opponent’s home ground and still won. Eagles not the best but being vastly underrated on here.

Melbourne 2021 also a bit underrated, they were excellent all year.

What has following seasons got to do with how good a side was in another season? There's no logic to that.

If a side goes undefeated and finishes with a percentage of 180, only to miss the finals next year, then guess what, that side would still be the best premiership side ever.

Pretty good, I think 2017, 2015 a bit lower just due to "unearned" home state advantage. Would say the same for 2014 but that was a great performance on the day.

2020 could be higher, so what if it was a short season.

2021 better than 2012 and perhaps 2008. Melbourne were very good that year and dominated finals. 2008 (like 2009 and also 2010 and 2011) clearly gets points for overcoming a very strong opponent though.

Maybe 2018 last as they avoided playing a dominant Richmond who the pies took care of for them. Yes the Dogs were bottom half of eight but to the eye they were better than that all year and won two interstate finals. But again, the home state GF was "unearned"

Hawks 2008 - 2016.

I subscribe to this rationale. All of the Geelong flags over this period were special in different ways and all were on the back of pretty dominant seasons (all 18 wins or more in the H&A and 12-0 in those finals years - I think 8 of the wins have been by 5-6 goals plus) but for purely the best, I think I have to give it to 2009, simply because of how ridiculously good the competition was.

2009 is the best top four I've seen: the brilliant Geelong, St Kilda and Bulldogs teams of that era in their absolute primes and Collingwood just entering their window. Carlton, Adelaide and Brisbane were seriously good too, easily top four material in another year.

2013 is a bit the same for me: an unusually strong top four. People remember Freo's season for beating Geelong in Geelong and the grand final jitters that ultimately cost them; I remember them putting on an end-to-end clinic against Sydney in the PF and thinking they could absolutely win the flag.

I do think how a team defended its flag has to come into consideration at least when ranking the bottom half of the group: it's too hard to rank otherwise..

I'd go something like
1. Geelong 2009
2. Collingwood 2010
3. Hawthorn 2013
4. Geelong 2007
5. Richmond 2019
6. Melbourne 2021
7. Geelong 2022
8. Hawthorn 2014
9. Richmond 2017
10. Geelong 2011
11. Sydney 2012
12. Hawthorn 2015
13. West Coast 2018
14. Richmond 2020
15. Hawthorn 2008
16. Western Bulldogs 2016

It's a funny one to think about. Do you rank it on pure dominance of the season? Superstar players? Strength of opposition? Whether they were set up for long-term success? Is West Coast in 2018 downgraded because of who was missing from the premiership team, or do they get extra credit for that? There's really no right or wrong.

Primary focus is on the quality of sides they were up against that year, second focus being their dominance over the league.

1. Geelong 2009 - amazing top 5-6 sides, great finals series. Just the best of the lot imo.
2. Geelong 2011 - 22-3 with amazing % and held at bay an incredible Collingwood side 3 times. Very good top 5 that year.
3. Hawthorn 2013 - amazing top four yet they clearly stood above the others. The most predictable premiership of the century imo. Was never going elsewhere.
4. Collingwood 2010 - really good top four and their three finals wins were all supreme. Great side.
5. Geelong 2007 - underrated? The quality of the top 4/8 was atrocious in my opinion. Clearly the best side in every sense though.
6. Melbourne 2021 - underrated side. Absolutely demolished the finals against some good sides.
7. Geelong 2022 - won their back 16 and only a couple sides really came close in any game during that run. Far and away the best side.
8. Hawthorn 2014 - smashed a great Swans side and it was a strong top 8.
9. Richmond 2019 - really weak top 4 imo but they were unstoppable winning their back 12 and storming through finals.
10. Sydney 2012 - beat a champion team on the day and it was a good top 5-6. Just struggling to move it up.
11. West Coast 2018 - smashed Richmond and beat the Pies three times including twice at the G. A weaker top 6 sees it ranked a little lower.
12. Richmond 2017 - great finals series but H&A wasn’t up there with the above
13. Hawthorn 2015 - arguably the weakest top 4 of the last 15 years. Freo and Sydney cooked. West Coast good not great. Great in finals when it mattered.
14. Hawthorn 2008 - David beat Goliath and they had a ripping finals. Weak top 4 though pulls it down.
15. Richmond 2020 - hard to rate. Top two sides weren’t much chop that year. Credit where credit is due but I don’t think it was like Geelong’s and Hawhorn’s thirds.
16. Western Bulldogs 2016 - credit for it being a very strong top 8 that year, but I think the grand final was dodgy
