Stephen Michael probably the best West Aussie of that era not to play in the VFL from what i heard. Michael Aish of Norwood probably the SANFL player of same era that did not play in this league that was a shame he did not spend a year or two.
He is the best I have ever seen in my long time of watching football Everyone included. No matter where they were from.

People who would know reckon that Stephen Michael is amongst the greatest footballers of all time, despite never having played in the VFL.

I wish I had seen him play.
Why is it necessary to have played in Victoria!! It bemuses me. Half of the players in the VFL came form other states. That is the reason it was so good.
Plenty of high lights on youtube.

Agree. Certainly back in those days the WAFL and SANFL were as strong as, or very nearly as strong as the VFL.

Another way to look at the “never played in the VFL” quote, is that a chap won a Brownlow (might have been very high up the year before ?) at Essendon, then returned home to WA the next season.

The chap who won the Brownlow was a very, very good footballer. TI regularly had duels with this player, and outpointed him.

I've seen them all play and it's Cyril at the top for me. Possibly the most talented player I've ever seen.
Then Maurice
Cyril was a freak - one of the most unique footballers I have ever seen. I have never seen another player with his pure speed and power and reflexes. The photo on the OP pretty much sums Cyril up - how do you even get there 🤷‍♂️

I did not see enough of Maurice but everyone raves.

The others are not close.

understand, totally, your list of 'the best players' looks like the list of Brownlow winners, right?
Come on..admit it. You are in the vast majority.

It's nearly 30 years since a defender (Wanganeen) won a Brownlow, and that has been internalised by newbies. At the time he was considered to have revolutionised the game as a mercurial rebounding defender.

Dan is not quite there yet, but he is developing into that sort of player. After winning 3 cups as a small forward.

But I get it...all about mids and forwards right? Defense is a step down + back.
Daniel Rioli is not close to Wangerneen who was a freak and one of the most courageous players in AFL history

Its interesting that both Maurice and Cyril had such short careers but are still remembered so fondly. Both were freaks. Willie is the closest in terms of skill set and X-Factor. Daniel is a more consistent player though imho.

Maurice did not have a short career.

Five years for the VFL. Short Career at the top level.

Obviously his time playing for South Fremantle should be valued far more than his time playing for a VFL team :rolleyesv1:, but five years playing at 'arguably' the highest level is short, especially for a star. I find these insecure arguments of SA and WA supporters about the worth of their state leagues tiresome. Its like AFL clubs attempting to introduce VFA flags to the premiership total. It's not relevant.

VFL/AFL has always been the premier Australian Rules competition in this country. Lets not cloud the issue by making it all about the value of other state competitions or earlier leagues.

Therefore, M. Rioli Sr had a short career.

Daniel Rioli to play game 150 this weekend at 26 years and 55 days old. Debuted in 2016 as an 18 year old. Only played 12 games in 2018. Otherwise has played 18+ games in every season, and will likely do so again this year.

Cyril debuted as an 18 year old and played his 150th game in his eighth season at 26 years and 25 days old. Only played 39 more and sadly retired at 28 years old.

Last year Dan signed a five year contract to keep him at Tigerland until the end of 2027. A good run with injury and he could be at +/- 250 games as a 30 year old. Sneaky chance to be the first Rioli to play 300 games.

Has been so much more than anyone could ever have imagined, just so lucky to have picked this guy up, they were hammering us at the time, but one of our all-time great draft picks.

I know this thread is translated overall as ‘best player on field’, but if we are talking about ‘overall positive effect on the club’, Dan Rioli has flown to the lead at a rate of knots.

We don’t know yet whether Cyril or HFC will eventually mediate, or who will be vindicated or be ‘right’, but hard to see HFC coming out of this without massive brand damage.

Cyril is no. 1 for me, but I never saw Maurice. Incredible family.
Yes, but also there was a cousin playing for South Fremantle that was as good, could have been better but didn't have the drive or desire that Maurice and others had.His name........... Benny Vigona. He could change a game in ten minutes. He had it all, a player that was as good on either side of his body, either by hand or foot.Had as good a step as Maurice.A brilliant high mark. And tough as well.
Junior Rioli, who is now playing for Port and gets raves, would not have been in the best at South Fremantle back in the days of Stepehn Michael, Benny Vigona, Maurice Basil Campbell, such was the skill artistry and foot nous.
As a South Fremantle follower, we and the WAFL were blessed to see such champions every week.

You hit the nail on the head there.

To think that people think Kevin Sheedy and Co where the push behind putting indigenous players on display !!!!. Yawn, ....... I saw it every Saturday afternoon, 30+ years ago.

Nothing is new, .... just re-packaged and re-branded.

+ we can’t forget the “The Keg”, Sebbie Rioli.

Pre injuries that caused that to happen, Sibbie free people from everywhere to watch him play. Great recruiting by Souths.

I'm too young for Maurice, so unable to comment on him really.

Cyril for me is one of the very best small forwards I've seen. His game defied the numbers he put out, every single time he was involved in the play something happened. His skills were amazing, but it was probably his defensive game that made him stand out for me. Cyril was a generational player, and is a fair amount ahead of the next one IMO.

Maurice was just so smooth in everything he did on the field, best player I have seen in my near 60 years, shame we didn't have him for longer and win a flag with him but Carlton dragged that damned hooker out on the ground to stop our run and screwed that opportunity for us.

I rate Cyril slightly higher than Maurice at VFL/AFL level. Maurice was a sublime footballer for sure but Cyril was more influential on the big stage. While Maurice has a Norm Smith to his name it wasn’t a dominant, obvious choice on the day whereas Cyril has numerous finals and big games marked by game-changing performances/moments.
Maurice state of origin feats defeats Cyril.State of origin was way above Grand final standard in the eighties.
