I picked average.

I actually like the Hale trade and think he wil become a very important team member, with the new rules. Also provides the flexibility to play Rough elsewhere.

Don't get the Cheney trade. We needed either a key defender or outside pace with skills.

???

Pretty happy. Missed out on Josh Hill, but we got the best ruckman available and picked up a hopeful Campbell Brown replacement in Kyle Cheany with a non-risk trade.

Chris Tarrant would have been nice but it was probably never going to happen anyway.

None of our trading will matter unless Clarko starts to play some of the young players! Players like Shoenmakers, Lisle, Milne, Shiels, should be getting games when players like Gilham, Guerra, Lewis, etc. have strings of bad game. At this rate they will all turn out like Kennedy and Mcglynn. Starved of opportunity until they leave and become stars at other clubs.
You can add breust to that list. He was only an injury away from getting a game this year.

We got Hale and Cheney, effectively for pick 31 (compo pick) and 71. I can't see how that's a bad deal considering how desperately we have needed a competitive, tall, mature bodied ruckman. No point having an elite midfield if they never get first use of the ball. I would have hated going into 2011 relying on Max Bailey's knee for a chance of premiership glory.

Just like the National Draft, which I'm sure a similar thread will emerge in the minutes it's complete, how do we even know yet?

I'll wait to see if Cheney and Hale bring something to the plate before making up my mind of how our trade week went.
As per , on the money Gal....although i do believe that both may suprise...
remember both player are young in ref too age and there possie...( 26 is young for a ruckman and we can thank the roos for not playing him there , which means his body has'nt been bashed around ) and red nut is 21.

Disappointed that we could not pick up a quality key defender as I believe that this is one of the two big missing piece of the puzzle. The other being the ruck. It's a competitive environment on and off the field and the opposition aren't going to help you build the team you need if they can avoid it. Wonder if fast Eddie had a word to Taz about not signing up with us?

Happy with Hale and not disappointed about missing out on Hill as I think players at that mid tier level are very similar in ability and I reckon we have a few that can play that role. The challenge is there for coaching staff and players.

Will be very interested to see how we go into 2011 now and if we think we can have a serious tilt at the flag or use the season to develop and gel a team for 2012. I think the only chance we have of a top 4 finish in 2011 is if some of the youngsters step up in a big way.

Interesting concept, rushing to judgement even before seeing the new players play a single game or how the side will structure up with their inclusions, very curious indeed, i'll reserve my judgement until we see what and how they contribute to the side.

:spade:

Agreed.

There's a reason they went for those particular players. Happy they went with Cheney for is youth and not Tarrant for his hype. The kid hasnt played much footy but that's not always a bad thing.

I'll wait until they've been through pre-season training and have figured out the structuring especially with the new sub rule.

Any trade week that you dont lose quality players is a good trade week.. Hale will make things interesting, a solid preseason from all the boys and we can be back to 2008. also i was thinking that Collingwood went after Tarrant just to keep him away from us, they really do not need him to improve there side.

Freo gifting Tarrant to the reigning premiers for a song was the most disappointing aspect of this trading period. If I was running Freo, I would much rather have forced him into retirement than risk him coming back to haunt us during critical finals games next year.

Re: Trade Scorecard

What trades should we have done exactly?

We should have worked harder to get Josh Hill to add leg speed instead of going after a slow undersized defender for one.

We desperately need Muston, Schoenmakers and a couple of others to have massisve pre-seasons, improve dramatically and hold down starting 22 spots. Otherwise I fear it's going to be more of the same.

We also need Birchall, Lewis and Ellis to really take that next step and become good, solid players

I don't think the word 'instead' enters into it; they were two totally unrelated actions.

One was a pick upgrade, done with a minimum of fuss.
In the other, we wrangled, but walked away when they wanted too much.

What, precisely, should we have worked harder on to get it done?

Re: Trade Scorecard

Don't think it's fair to evaluate the trade period in isolation from the draft.

:thumbsu:spot on splodgey

Also people saying it didn't identify our weaknesses - Ruck was a big weakness so yes it covered that

also KDP we have Schoenmakers

Pace - we have Shiels and Savage

You don't win premierships in trade week (and if you are going to counter my argument with the pies and Jolly - then I suggest you look at how they got Beams, Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Thomas, Reid, Brown etc - all through draft and development and that's what we have to do!!!)

Re: Trade Scorecard

Didn't we trade our compensation pick to get Hale?

Trade #6
Hawthorn receive David Hale and North's 3rd round draft selection (#52)
North Melbourne receive end of first round compensation pick + Hawthorn's 4th round draft selection (#71)

Effectively we lost Campbell Brown, a first round future pick and a 4th round pick for David Hale and a 3rd rounder.

Not my idea of a succesful trade week

No, you're wrong. Effectively we lost Brown and a 4th round pick for Hale and a 3rd rounder.

See, the thing is, I almost fell off my chair when I read that Hawthorn offered its second round pick and the pick acquired from Melbourne to the Bulldogs for Hill. Rocket Eade must still have a soft spot for his old club to knock that deal back today.

I'm not sure what else Hawthorn could have done to get Hill to the club, except throw (away) its first round pick.

Very glad we didn't get Hill to the club, especially at that price. I still think we overpaid for Hale, but to give up so much for Hill would have been daylight robbery by the Bulldogs.

Agree with this.

Re: Trade Scorecard

Hale is our number 1 ruck. Suzie tries but is not effective. Massive win for no real loss.

Mitch Clark would have been magnificent but we would have had to offer the world.

Hill is a proven player with issues. Hardly catastrophic that we missed him. We put a price on him and would not budge. Good trading philosophy.

Our defenders are not physical. Cheney will add some backbone and may even bruise an opponent. You can never have enough of these blokes around the club, even if they dont get a game they add intensity to training.

We kept our picks which is great because we desperately need some youth coming through.

he would have gone in the draft, and if anyone but collingwood picked him up he would retire, they got something, its always better then nothing..

The AFL needs to find a way to stop this - ruins trade week. If theres any truth to the rumours that he would have retired if picked up by anyone other than the pies then the afl should have de-registered him for bringing the game into disrepute.

Guys from a Melbourne supporters perspective I reckon Cheney is worth a punt with a nothing pick. He's played very well for Casey and has probably been unlucky not to play more games for the Dees so far. Give him 12 months and see how he goes - hes still only 21. Nothing lost imo.

Bit surprised with Hale I must admit - thought you guys might have spent your pick on Warnock for full/centre half back. He is AFL quality and definately would have been good for you guys.

Hope Savage and Shiels have big preseasons.

I would have liked some pace, somewhere, mid forward or back.
The game's against Melbourne and Freo particularly highlighted our lack of pace.

Hope Savage and Shiels have big preseasons.

Trade week was OK and as Galon state's the true value of our new additions cannot be fairly judged until at least half way through next year at which time I hope we are sitting 3 games clear on top of the ladder.

Hope Savage and Shiels have big preseasons.

I'm happy. More than anything we need pace and you dont get that by trading unless they are complete spuds. Only place to shop is the draft and the Hawks have retained all their early picks. If they pick up 2 highly skilled whippets with their early picks I will be wrapped.

Then, more importantnly than trading and drafting, they need to work out a way to develop these kids. We apparently already good ones and hopefully will get a few more. No lets get them up and going.

Re: Trade Scorecard

Considering who was available during trade week - then we haven't done too badly.

Apart from Laidler - who is unknown quantity and Hill - who was way over the odds, I can't think of anyone else who we would have traded for who would have significantly improved our side.

Essentially, we have kept our list in tact. We will need to do a bit of pruning (expect Taylor, Croad, Dowler etc to make way) over the coming weeks and draft shrewdly next month.

What I am happy about is that we have retained picks in each of rounds 1 to 4 of the draft. We will need to draft for our needs.

Our trading can be summed up as Brown for Hale & Cheney.

Hale will be our number 2/pinch ruck as a back up for Renouf.

I expect that they will try and develop Cheney into a defensive forward.

Unimpressed with trade week

Hawks did not address the need for another KPD. Hawks didn't get a speedy midfielder. Instead they traded away the compensation pick for Brownie on a foward / ruck that can't get a game at North, apparently addressing a need that few saw as important as the defender / mid lackings. No takers for Dowler, Muston or Ladson who were on the table.

And to turn an average week into an unmitigated disaster, newcomers to the NTFL U-18 competition, the Big River Hawks, were provided with a lesson by powerhouse Saint Mary's. Yes, BRH play in brown and gold; there was a picture in the NT News but it didn't make their website.

Re: Unimpressed with trade week

H_A, I fully expect that Roughie will spend more time on his speed an endurance and less on his strength this pre-season, with the hope that he shows enough to play some pre-season stuff at CHB. Hale's arrival means that we have a ready made option for FF.

Assuming that is the case, and that Schoey improves, we could well have the following back-half riches:
- Talls: Rough and Schoey
- 3rd talls: Gibbo, Gilham and Stratts
- Mediums: Birchall, Murphy, Whitecross and Milne
- Smalls: Goo, Laddo and Cheney.

For mine, whilst a fraction slow, there's a lot to like about a young back half of:

HB: Gibson - Roughead - Ellis
FB: Whitecross - Schoey - Stratton
