I’ve been calling for Draper to have a spell but thought he played well yesterday. Tried to be a bit more creative and much tighter than a couple of weeks ago when we played St Kilda. In hindsight he played ok against Collingwood and moved to sub due to circumstances based around a number of talls going down and Wagner being injected was influential in that late comeback.

Great development year for Draper. He will come out for Cox (when Cox is fit) but a real option next year as third tall as well as second tall. When he goes back to Peel later this season I look forward to him being a bit more creative and attacking.

Another player who has copped a hiding on here is JOM. Has been building the past few weeks and was good on the wing. Thrown in the middle for cameo’s here and there. He has been no where near as bad as some have portrayed.

Johnson, Erasmus and Wagner all fighting for the sub role. Really like Wagner’s composure and willingness to take the game on as sub. Usually picking up 8-10 possessions in the quarter. Emmett can develop his game further at Peel. Sturt deserves a few games. Created scoring opportunities and hopefully with a run of games will iron out a couple of those turnover errors. Two stand out like dog balls - the HTB coming out of defence. Just take the first option instead of whatever that poor Mundy hip shake attempt was. Leave that for the Mundy. Then there was that corridor turnover where he looked at the player about 4 times and then lazily kicked it straight to Melbourne. Missed a handball or two as well. I’d expect less of these errors as he settles in as a forward. Certainly Emmett had more than his share of significant turnovers.

I’ve been one of JOM harshest critics based on both his output and his selection over others who will(hopefully) be at Freo for the next 10 years.
The reduced rotations in terms of number of players(no Johnson) yesterday gave him the chance to play longer in a role he’s more used. He had all but 1 of his 26 possession outside the fwd 50 arc. He plays best as a wide receiver delivering it to the next open option.
He hasn’t had the time playing wing/mid to do this, playing as a fwd which he has said he’s never played before. Credit or circumstance to the coaches for giving him a time in a role that suits his strengths. He is not a fwd.
Is it worth selecting him over Johnston, Erasmus, Simpson. If he can play like yesterday for the rest of season absolutely. Going forward I’m not so sure.

Johnson is the interesting one for mine, the whole team performed really well and as you mentioned, JOM played better with those extra Mid/wing minutes. I would add that Switta showed his best work is up the ground rotating between HHF and inside mid which was made possible without Johnson taking those mid minutes, perhaps Johnson would better off coming on as Sub and playing purely inside mid when he does?

Agree on Draper - will be a sign of our solid depth when he goes back to Peel. Always been a Sturt fan and I agree he did some good things. Those clangers though, in a game of little pressure ...:'(
