What was confirmed to me after watching Kilmore v Macedon on Saturday and hearing reports of the other matches, this is what I've learned this season.

- Take away Riddell and Rockbank and the competition is the most even it has EVER been. On their day, any of the nine remaining sides can beat one another. Riddell perhaps can be beaten (note: side's might have to go the knuckle :p).

- We have perhaps the best crop of young guns (16-20). I'm mentioning James Wright, Paul Conversano, Alistair Collins, The Big Rig (no name needed), Jae Wilton, Nathan Carroll, Paul Newton, Brenton Sutherland, Peter Robertson, James Climas, Ben Sonogan, James Petran, Cam Dawson, Jamie Michael, Ben Richmond, Myles Dorman, Alex Laidlaw, Ben Pronk, Dylan Walker, Andrew Hibbert, Trent Kelly, Chris Smith, Stuart Clarke, Dylan Hannon, John Ryan, Ben Shippard, James Hepburn etc. all playing key roles at senior level at some stage or another.

- Making big statements before a season does not change a club's culture. Kilmore the big disappointments of 2008. Needed to secure Wittmer and Kaakour. Should have done what Lancefield, Macedon, Melton Centrals have done and just quietly go about their business.

- The Cats can make the grand final, and can beat Woodend-Hesket this Saturday. Match of the year thus far.

- Woodend-Hesket can go back-to-back if they have all thier players firing at the right time again.

- The All-Star match concept is good in theory, but the players have yet to really warm to it, neither have the fans. That might all change in a week or so when the game is upon us, but the league perhaps should have locked in a venue at the start of the season and done a little more promotion. Lack of communication between the coaches/league/clubs/players has been the biggest issue I've heard to date. All is not lost yet, lets hope we get a big crowd at Riddell and the players put on a spectacle.

- Crowds are on the up, especially at clubs like Wallan, Lancefield, Macedon, Melton Central where success has been dry in recent seasons.

- The RDFL is starting to grow its reputation as a strong league both on and off the field. I think our better sides would be very competitive in neighbouring leagues, who appear to be dropping back while we advance.

- Depth in a playing list is still the key to success.

- The fans are hoping that sixth beats third in the first week of the finals to show up the flawed top-six system.

- Having an aura helps you win football games :D

Great post Matt, one of your finest. Some good points about Kilmore too. Saw them on the weekend, very weak side. No one willing to put their head over the ball. Shouldn't be a one-man show but it is down there. Nervous about some of your Bowen bets?

Not too nervous at the moment mate. The Big Rig might make a late run though :p

Here is a shot of him in action over Kilmore's Brad Colliver.

Not encouraging blokes to go dirty, but it worked for Romsey on the weekend apparently (I wasn't there). Was told it stopped them from getting flogged.

Who told you this shit, about Romsey going the knuckle on Riddell and to say it stopped them from getting flogged you realy want to get your facts correct.Neither side went the knuckle a few players had a bit of a dust up just before half time nothing serious. Both sides gave what they got This only happened because of Simmo.Sides can only take so much of this guys shit before someones frustration takes over. The game was closer than the score suggest,it was only that Riddell had a big 3rd qtr to put the game out of reach. I would imagine the 1st half of football was probably Riddells toughest for the season so far. The reality is Romsey doesnt have enough depth to cover there injuries.3x 18s had to back up and play seniors as well .You cant do this and think that you are going to beat the RDFL powerhouse. All Romsey can do is continue to play the kids and hope to get some players back from injuries. Its not good for the Romsey Football club to have you on here telling the world that the players deliberately went out to hurt Riddell players NOT TRUE:thumbsdown:

Good call. I played in this game and was not far away from the one dust up of the game and you are right there was no melous in it all, just a few blokes frustrations boiling over. Romsey took it right up to us for the first half and after a fair old spray at half time we came out a different side.
If not for our bad kicking at goal through the second half maybe the scores would be a little bigger but I take nothing away from Romsey they will still suprise a few sides if they can put together 4 quarters.

Of course the Romsey U18s coach is going to deny that was an instruction. But I don't think the RDFL would be happy that a club official was bagging an umpire that harshly on a public forum. If Scott McCartney was a dictator like Demetriou you'd be at the league HQ quick smart :)

Just had a look at all three ladders in the comp.Heres an interesting look at what awaits the finals thus far Seniors first and second gauranteed 3/10 open and all a chance try and pick whos in and whos out, Seconds first and second gauranteed 3/8 open same again who will finish where, now look at the thirds ladder first to sixth nearly gauranteed with the Kangas a maybe but in what order will they finish look at the points and percentage, with percentage the key factor here. Im sure the league would be very happy with all three scenarios at the moment. Interesting for awile anyway

You obviously have some pretty strong opinions on the other grounds, what specifically is your beef with those?
Some grounds are not the problem it's the wind conditions at these grounds (Diggers, Melton, Wallan, Kilmore, Rockbank) Kangas no netball facilities, Woodend just a sh!t ground for footy, best cricket ground in the district though. Before everyone start bitching a lot of time and money goes into getting clubs into finals I (my opinon only) hate seeing finals won and lost on a toss of a coin.

Injuries are going to have a huge bearing on the final ladder and of course the uneven draw. Those that play Riddell twice will have a significant % impact. It is going to go down to the wire!

I see your point - might get a few objections though!!!

Kilmore has yet to play Riddell and already has a worse percentage than those who have. Not a good sign.

Exactly Richo, but you have to make allowances for the man after all he is under a lot of stress with 2 draws in a week and a sore toe from kicking the fence.

Spies lied pal, it wasn't the fence it was an advertising sign.
Two draws in four days (last kick off the day in both games to get the draw mind you) is enough for anyone's hair to turn grey.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Gotta love footy though.

Agree, just because a final is at that ground does not mean home club has sole right to host it. (food for thought)

You make a point, other clubs deserve the opportunity to make cash come finals time. All the grounds in the competition are owned by shires, so its not completely the clubs' faults if their facilities aren't up to scratch. But I guess Macedon and Lancefield in particular have pumped a huge amount of cash into making their grounds and facilities top rate, so they deserve a big slice of the pie when they host finals.

Works done/to be done at Macedon - scoreboard, social rooms, netball court, new canteen (both to come).

Works done at Lancefield - verandah at pavilion, refurbish change rooms, new scoreboard, increased parking, netball shelters, coach's boxes etc.
