List Records & Bests - Most Consecutive Losses (ex-fp discussion)

The Western Rams (formerly Rockbank) are currently 77 games without a win, which is now quite comfortably the longest streak in Victoria.

Since their move from the Riddell District FNL to the Western FNL in 2024, they've been showing some promising signs – three scores of 78 and above is encouraging for a team that's used to being belted by 200 points on the regular.

Of the other big Victorian streaks documented in this December 2023 Herald Sun article:
  • Maryborough in the Bendigo FNL are up to 52 games without a win. They got within 55 pts of Kangaroo Flat in Round 2 but were belted by Gisborne and then Sandhurst in the following two rounds by a combined 591 points, which is awfully sad
  • Lalor broke a 44-game losing streak in Round 3 of the Northern FNL this year. They defeated Kilmore by 3 points, and to follow it up, defeated Reservoir by 14 points two games later!
  • Nilma Darnum broke a 39-game losing streak in the opening round of this year's Ellinbank DFL with a 144-point drubbing of Nyora. It's always fascinating when these long losing streaks get broken with such massive victories, as it almost always happens in Round 1 when leagues look to schedule two cellar-dwellers against each other so at least one can get their year off to a good start. The Bombers have had another two victories since then but certainly aren't out of the woods, losing their most recent match to ladder leaders Buln Buln by 130 points.
  • Wahgunyah, "the team that became famous for losing", broke a 41-game streak in Round 3 this year with a stirring 9-point victory over Dederang-Mt Beauty. Former AFL player Harley Bennell had a run-around; the ABC also followed up their initial article with this match report. Things are still mighty tough at the Lions though – their most recent match was a 310-point loss to Kiewa Sandy Creek.
  • North Sunshine are having a very rough time of it – goalless on three occasions this year, no doubt due in some part to the farcical decision by the Western FNL to scrap the third division competition, creating a hopelessly lopsided Division 2 in its place. Their losing streak is now up to 45 games. All eyes are on the match between Western Rams and North Sunshine on Saturday 22 June – barring a draw, one club will be singing the song for the first time in thousands of days.
  • Rumbalara broke its 40-game losing streak in the Murray FNL with a big 81-point victory over struggling Echuca United in Round 4 this year. Rumba have been fairly competitive each week since, with an average losing margin of 36 points.
  • Gormandale in the North Gippsland FNL are now up to 37 games without a win and don't look like coming any closer. Glengarry, who are second-botttom with a percentage of 30.58%, defeated Gormandale by 85 points in the opening round.
  • Westerns are big improvers in the South West District FNL. After 27 games without a win, they crushed the struggling Heathmere by 106 points in Round 1, and are now sitting mid-table with a 5–3 W/L record after eight rounds.
I'll leave it there for now.

The now defunct Channel Football Club, based out of Snug, Tasmania holds, as far as I'm aware, the Tasmanian record for most consecutive defeats with 62.
This was recorded between 14th July 2007 and broken on 14th May 2011 over two different competitions.
They lost their final 23 matches in the SFL Regional League before moving to the Old Scholars Football Association at the start of 2009 whereby they lost their first 39 matches until they recorded an 18-point win over DOSA (Dominic Old Scholars Association) at North Hobart Oval.
The Saints had been struggling for many years leading up to that record, their last strong year was in 1999 where they dropped the SFL Preliminary Final to Brighton by a point at Huonville.

Current Old Scholars Football Association club, Richmond, are now sitting in second place on that list having recorded their 58th consecutive loss over the weekend.
The Blues path to infamy was somewhat sudden and catastrophic having been one of the top clubs vying for premierships on a consistant basis for a number of years right up until their last recorded victory on 14th September 2019 in the OSFA Preliminary Final, an 18-point win over OHA at Richmond.
Their 2019 Grand Final loss to DOSA at North Hobart was the beginning of the 58-game streak.

Former Darwin Football Association club, Myalla, recorded 57 consecutive losses between 1993 and 1995. 20240629_232253.jpg 20240629_232317.jpg

Richmond now at 59.
Suffered a 39.18 (252) to 1.5 (11) defeat to DOSA at the TCA Ground this afternoon.
Reserves went down by 211 points, looking pretty bleak for the Blues.

60. A bit better performance by them today only going down by 64 points to third placed Hutchins at Richmond, 15.15 (105) to 6.5 (41).
The Blues face an out of form University at the Uni in Sandy Bay next week followed by St Virgils who have started to hit their straps in recent weeks out at New Town Bike Track, they face DOSA at Richmond the week after, which if they lose, they will claim the Tasmanian record. 20240629_230802.jpg 20240629_231626.jpg

The Western Rams broke their 78-game losing streak – the then-longest in Australia – not too long ago.

To do with a 177-point victory is quite astounding, but it really doesn't say much for the future of North Sunshine :(
