New season, new thread.

Big season coming up for the Redbacks. New coach, and Darren Berry has already been promoting not only youth but also local players. I'm expecting to see some new faces (Lehmann, Delaney), and more of some others (Richardson, Putland, Lyon). And the possible return of Dan Cullen.

We once again have the Champions League to look forward to in September. This one is extra important, as this is the last time the Redbacks will ever play together in T20 cricket before the joke of a domestic T20 competition is introduced.

Some time this week the new contract list should be released. The lists have already been inexplicably cut down in size by Cricket Australia, and Tait no longer holds a CA contract either so that is one less spot too. So there will be less contracts on offer. Who will go? I would imagine we wont be seeing Cassell, Edmondson, Duval, Lang and Tait on our list this time around.

Could this finally be the year where things change? Probably not, but hopefully SACA stay out of Berry's way.

The contract list is out:

Cullen Bailey
Aiden Blizzard
Cam Borgas
Dan Christian
Tom Cooper
Mick Delaney
Theo Doropoulos
Callum Ferguson
Peter George
Jake Haberfield
Dan Harris
Michael Klinger
Tim Ludeman
Nathan Lyon
Aaron O'Brien
Gary Putland
Kane Richardson
Chadd Sayers
James Smith

And our Rookies:
Ben Dougall
Joe Mennie
Elliot Opie
Tom Thornton

One Keeper. Good to see Ludes get a shot. Great guy, good player, and will improve. Not sure about Theo Doropoulos, but he had a brilliant season in Victoria last summer. Scoring heaps and taking a few wickets. At his 3rd state now.

I've no idea who Joe Mennie is to be honest, he comes from NSW, so he may well be a decent cricketer, but i've never come across him in my travels in the world of cricket. Opie gets rewarded for a brilliant season last summer too, started a bit slowly, but all of a sudden found some form, some rhythm just before christmas and he almost became unstoppable after christmas in a winning premiership. Mick Delaney, when fit is just incredible to watch, struggled a bit in the last season with injury, but he is quick when he gets going.

Everyone else is very much on par as per expected i think

Decent looking list, these are the changes from last year...

In:
Mick Delaney
Theo Doropoulos
Nathan Lyon
Kane Richardson
Chadd Sayers

Ben Dougall
Joe Mennie
Elliot Opie
Tom Thornton

Good to see grade form being rewarded. Doropoulos was always an interesting player at WA, looks to have found some consistency in Victoria though. Will at least offer some more hitting power at the end of an innings. Also looking forward to seeing more of Delaney and Opie.

Out:
Rob Cassell
Chris Duval
Ben Edmondson
Tim Lang
Graham Manou
Shaun Tait

Joel Davies
Tom Moffat
Tom Brinsley
Michael Cranmer

Well, the first four should never have been brought over in the first place. Rookies are unlucky, particularly Moffat but with the limited contracts you can't be keeping everyone.

Tom Cooper, Callum Ferguson and Nathan Lyon are all playing cricket overseas at the moment.

In the opening two games for Australia A, Ferguson has scores of 52 and 1. Lyon has figures of 4/22 (7 overs) and 1/20 (3 overs). That first game in particular was a good one for the two Redbacks.

Cooper is still playing for the Netherlands, scoring 75 and 26 in two ODIs against Scotland. And he is averaging 46 playing 40 over county cricket for them too.

Another good Aus A game for Ferg (57* that guided the team to victory) and Lyon (3/38 from his 10) against Zimbabwe.

wonder what Pollard is getting for playing with the strikers?

Hope Cullen Bailey gets another crack in the 4 day side, he always showed something

Squad currently in Darwin playing against a CA XI, they won the first match yesterday and play another OD tomorrow and then a four day match starting next Monday I think.

CA XI won the second OD match. Bowling SA out for about 160, Jake Hannan from QLD picked up 4 wickets, while Alex Kemp 70 odd and Jake Fawcett 48 made the runs for CA XI.

The 4 Day match that started yesterday saw Dan Harris knock up 180, SA are currently 4 for 400.

Redbacks squad for the Champions League...

Klinger, Ferguson, Christian, Harris, Sayers, Borgas, Cooper, Ludeman, Rashid, O'Brien, Lyon, Richardson, Tait, Putland, Smith.

Blizzard chose to play for Mumbai instead, but it's good to see Rashid coming back to play with us. Hopefully we put in a good showing, as this is the last time the Redbacks will play T20 cricket together before Cricket Australia kill off this format.
