2007 Review
Quigley's 2008 Review

2008 End of Season Review

This year Hooper looked a completely different player to last year. He rarely posed much of a threat, and if this year was the first time you saw him you might think he is a fairly limited player. He started the season overweight and lost pace as a result. He struggled to create room to work in and was constantly under pressure whenever he got the ball.

All year the Lions had a dearth of goals from crumbers and much of the responsibility must fall on Hooper for not managing to get to the right spots often enough. Last year he made his mark by working up the ground and breaking away from packs and running the ball, but this year he seemed to lack the fitness to do that which limited him to playing more as a genuine forward pocket. Hooper is not really a natural crumber so it wasn’t a role that suited him, managing only 19 goals for the year.

In the end Hooper played 20 games but was lucky to do so. He was dropped twice, once in round 17 and again in round 22. He is only 20 and would still have a few brownie points left from his awesome patch of form late last year, but he has lost a lot of ground since then. He has the talent, but the question remains whether he has the work ethic and commitment to make the most of it.

Re: Rhan Hooper

I think he's one who needs to be managed a bit more in the off-season, seems like when he leaves the club he loses the professionalism to keep at it.

I hope he can find some of that '07 form again, otherwise I'm gonna have to change my nick

Lions suspend Hooper for a month
5th December 2008, 23:30 WST

Brisbane Lions forward Rhan Hooper has been suspended by the club for four weeks.
Brisbane released a statement on Friday night explaining the action they had taken against the 20-year-old.
The statement said Hooper had been "suspended from the cub effective immediately, following repeated breaches of his playing contract during the pre-season.
"Hooper has failed to attend December's scheduled training sessions and the cub has suspended the player for a period of 28 days.
"We are working with Rhan on this ongoing issue in the best interests of the player and the Lions."
There was no comment from Hooper, who has played 39 times for the Lions since being drafted in 2005, including 20 games this year.

Re: Rhan Hooper

Oh FFS. Not again.

You have to wonder whether he really has the desire for an AFL career. He obviously loves footy, and hates training. Last time he went AWOL, he spent the next month or so running laps, and nothing else. Surely he knows this is what will happen again... I dare say he might not be coming back. I am sure pre-season training is a complete drag, but who here would turn down a six figure salary to get fit and kick a footy around? Hooper is unlikely to find a better deal in the 'real world'.

Assuming there is no valid personal reason for his absence, it might be for the best if he decides to walk away for good. We got into that ridiculous bidding war with Richmond last year and he's now on a pretty lucrative three-year deal. Voss may have been left a bit of a bum deal from the Lethal regime.

Too much salary cap wasted on a player who underperformed this year and whose doesn't seem to have the attitude required to make the most of it. This guy was fast becoming one of my favorites to watch last year, amazing how your perceptions can change in a year.

Why did we trade Corrie... sure he could be a bit of a joker at times, but he'd never walk away like this.

Re: Rhan Hooper

Agreed TBD, you really have to wonder if we will ever see the best of Rhan.
Really disappointing that this has occurred again & this must place pressure on his career.

A young small roving forward may well have become the priority in the PSD.

So very disappointing - I was talking to my son in Melbourne last night about how far short of the mark Hooper's game was in 08 after his brilliant best of 07.

This might boost the chances of Davis in the PSD - as attractive as adding another young prospect to the list may be,we need goals in 2009.

I am waiting for the apologists to log on and start posting;
It will run something along these lines.

• We don’t know the full story; Rhan could have a legitimate reason to miss pre-season training sessions.
• He is only young not everyone knows at his age what they want to do with their life.
• He does not have transport.
• His family is not around to provide support.
• He had an argument with his girlfriend.
• He had a head ache.
• His alarm clock didn’t go off.
• He thought training was at 6.00PM, not 6.00AM.
• He’s got mental illness, so we have to be more understanding (oh hang on, that is a legitimate reason)
• He does not want to live in a shithole like Brisbane, he wants to live in a thriving, vibrant metropolis like Melbourne.
• It’s in his cultural make up to go walkabout. He needs understanding not persecution.
• Voss has no man-management skills that is way Rhan has gone walkabout.
• It’s Voss’ fault because he’s too inexperienced to deal with issues such as this.
• If Leigh was around this would not have happened. (oops, sorry about this one)
• He’s a flawed football genius so we have to cope with his idiosyncrasy (I know stretching it a bit)
On and on and on…

Rather waiting on an explanation from Rhan first before passing judgement and sticking the knives in.

Here it is for you...

Rhan Hooper finds his feet with Lions
Article from:
Andrew Hamilton
March 22, 2008 12:00am

WHEN a teammate cheekily tells Rhan Hooper to make sure he turns up for work the next day and doesn't go walkabout again, the Lions speedster knows he belongs. The fact the events of last summer – when he walked out on the club for two months during the pre-season – are now fodder for gags, signals closure in an incident that threatened to ruin his relationship with his teammates and coach and end his career.
Life's pretty good for Hooper at the moment, he's just bought his first home in Ipswich, late last year he inked a lucrative new deal with the Lions and, entering hs third year in the AFL, is tipped for big things. He's come a long way from the shy kid who used to catch a train to training because he had no licence and no car and couldn't stand the thought of leaving his mum in Ipswich to live closer to the club.
"It was pretty embarrassing, I used to bring a change of clothes and wear nothing with the Lions' emblem on it so no one would know who I was," he said.
"But I've got a car and a licence now, and I've bought a house, it is my first little investment, and I don't mind the drive in, the city is a bit fast for me. I like my nice quiet areas."
All he needs to do now is educate long-time partner Jade Clarke on AFL.
"She still doesn't know the rules," he laughed. "She is an NRL girl, she reckons she just watches me. My mum takes her to games and tries to teach her but she just doesn't get it."
Hooper was fined $7000 and put through a gruelling solo 14-week training program on his return to the Lions just before the start of last season and had to ask forgiveness from his teammates.
A lot has changed in 12 months.
"Everything is very good, I've got a lot of support at the club, the boys are starting to drop the occasionally sly little joke about what happened and it shows me that they have moved on from it," he said. "I feel like I'm wanted here and I belong."
Hooper deserved the loss of respect from his teammates, but he also deserved to get it back.
For half a season he did extra running after every training session and when he returned to the reserves he played full games without a break.
"I didn't think I was going to get another game again," he said. "It was hard. There was obviously a bit of disappointment because I did let the boys down.
"I was determined to earn back their trust."

When Hooper looks back now on the events of last summer, he can't quite figure out why he was questioning his football future.
The simple answer is he missed his mum, who had moved with her mother to Albury after Hooper's first year.
Several discussions with co-captain Simon Black, who was "very helpful", and a long heart-to-heart with his mother made him realise what was at stake.
"I just thought to myself, 'I've done all the hard work to get there, why am I throwing it all away'," he said. "It is the perfect job, to have this is a dream.
"I got to have a game with Leppa, played a bit with Vossie and Johnno.
"It's weird, you get moments when it dawns on you that these blokes are my teammates, I'm one of he boys.
"But I'm also inspired by them, I reckon I get a little bit from everyone, people with courage like Brownie who is real tough, Blackie is a natural born leader and Nigel is just the fittest bloke I've seen."
The talented forward chuckled when he revealed his mum had now returned to Queensland.
"I got used to it, not having her around, she ended up back here but I'm not feeling the same as I was last year," he said.

Re: Rhan Hooper

I sort of wonder what the "28 days suspension" means. Does it mean that he'll be excluded from group training over that time?

Personally I think it would be more effective if there was some sort of sanction that meant he wouldn't be considered for selection in the first month of next season - similar to what happened to S.Johnson at Geelong.

Re: Rhan Hooper

The bad news is that this is becoming very much a pattern, even since before he was drafted.

The good news is that when he gets himself together to redeem himself he trains like a madman and then plays very good football.

It's a tricky one for the coaches, and it may require a more individualised training program. He seems to suffer from burnout quite easily so he may need some extra time off, but then put him on a higher instensity workload when he comes back.

I must have missed that part of his 2008 Grim. ;)

Re: Rhan Hooper

I must have missed that part of his 2008 Grim. ;)

That's just my point. Last year he stayed out of trouble, didn't go missing, got through a full year. But what he produced on the footy field was very average. His best footy was the year he went awol.

Re: Rhan Hooper

Hooper is another of our fringe players who only got as many senior games as he did because of lack of pressure from below. Repeat offender. Poor season 2008. Must be close to royal order of the boot time, unless of course there are extenuating circumstances which doesn't seem likely seeing as how he is suspended.

Pity of it is he has shown he has the talent, and that he can add just what we need to small player strength in our forward line. Just hasn't delivered regularly enough.

Re: Rhan Hooper

At the end of the day, despite the fact that we've had troubles with small forwards, Hooper is not indispensable. It could well be that our issues with small forwards boils down more to what is happening in the midfield, at any rate.

More than likely, if Hooper is on the outer, it will mean that the likes of McGrath, Sherman, Proud and maybe some of the recent draftees will simply be in the team with more prominent and consistent roles.

Rhan Hooper's no-show blow
Article from:Sunday Herald Sun
December 07, 2008 12:00am

THE AFL career of Brisbane Lions forward Rhan Hooper is on a knife-edge after the club suspended him for going missing for the second time in as many summers.
The Lions issued a statement yesterday announcing the 20-year-old would be suspended for 28 days for continually failing to attend pre-season training.
Hooper walked out on the club in January 2007 citing personal problems and the grind of pre-season training.
He returned three weeks later and was fined $7000.
Hooper's manager, Peter Whitehead, said he had not been in touch with his client since the Lions handed down the suspension.
"I'm anxious to meet with Rhan to deal with the issues at hand," Whitehead said.
"I hope to resolve this issue with Rhan and the club as soon as possible. Obviously, my main concern is Rhan's welfare."

On and on and on…

ha ha - you're getting cynical irel ;)

it's not good enough, simple is that - we had to put up with Aker's crap for years but, as good as he was, the club even had limits to its patience with him

naturally a player gets some sympathy the first time but there would need to be exceptional cirumstances involved for a second offence...if there's not, he'll need more than a "sorry" to win over the team again

if there is no valid reason, the club would need to weigh up his potential and ask whether they can get his head right for professional football...I suppose at this stage of the year there are not too many options...he's already in the salary cap for 2009 so he'll get another year at least

it's a bit sad really :(
