Rhan Hooper?

As an outsider, he looks like a potential gun in waiting, mercurial, fast, extremely skilful.

Yet you just delisted him, I'm guessing for the dual reasons of being inconsistent and, perhaps more importantly, judging by the number of times he was fined, being a bad egg.

What was it that made him such a unit? Why could he not be turned around?

Every club looks at some of these 'attitude' delistings and thinks "Perhaps our club could turn him around", and I must admit, I think he could add something to Hawthorn, but what do you guys think of him? Career over?

Leigh Matthews and Michael Voss couldn't bring him into line.

Sure, there's a chance that he might turn around at another club, but it's a pretty big gamble. Of course, if it pays off, you pick up a gun for practically nothing.

Has the physical attributes, but not the mental ones. Often isn't in the position he shoudl be in, and is in general not consistant enough. Had enough chances at our club i think, didn't seem committed enough, although this is something that might change with time if given a chance.

Well worth a gamble

If I was a club in the position to give him a regular game (ie. he'd fit into the team's best 22), I'd give him a 2-year contract.

Get him working on his fitness non-stop all pre-season, with a view to playing in the midfield. Really get him super-fit and commited, even if that requires someone 'minding' him most of the time. Let him know that he is valued and wanted, but also put in his contract a 'three-strikes' clause. That is, if he has three 'incidents' (and an 'incident' can be a simple as a missed training session), then his contract can be terminated. Let him know that you have confidence in him by playing him every week (unless he is injured or 'misbehaving'). Obviously most top sides couldn't offer him that opportunity, but a bottom 8 side might be able to, and it might just see him come good.

I did chuckle when I read a comment on the Blues board saying that Rhan got homesick living 1 hour awa y from his family, so drafting him interstate prob isn't a great idea

He'd definitely fit into our best 22. He just doesn't have the impact to do it regularly. I'd say he'd fit into everyone's best 22 save possibly St Kilda, Adelaide, Collingwood and Geelong.

Think Damian Cupido.
Stupido could have been anything - someone recently said that he had Ablett levels of ability. To be honest, it was hard to argue as the sky was the limit with Damien. I saw some interviews recently where he realised what he had lost - as with many of these unfulfilled talents, I will end up feeling sorry for him. It must be a massive burden to go through life knowing that you could have been so much more.

Hooper is not the same standard in terms of performance ceiling, IMO, but is about as slack. Having said that, perhaps a change of scenery and a renewed focus might go hand in hand. He's good enough to play midfield, half forward in pretty much every side in the comp if he gets his head right.

Yeah, I don’t think Hooper is as naturally talented, but I think he could have been just as destructive. Different types of players with the same problem.

If you told me 2 years ago that Hooper would not be on our list in 2010, I would have been distraught.

I actually was shocked at how little I cared when I heard he had been delisted last week.

Things can change quickly in footy.

Bob summed it up best for everybody.

Rhan: the player I'm most frustrated, but least upset to farewell.

Is there any merit in saying to someone like cupido (that may have matured a bit) - You've got twelve months to get to certain AFL fitness or target presented to them with the thought of putting them on the rookie list and see where it goes from there. Drafting after this year is going to be a rough ride and all angles need to be considered... even past rejects that have seen the light (bit like Voss's trading strategy I guess)...... Or is this where TBD whips out a 'Do Not Want' pic.

I am going to be a bit on my own here I guess. IMO Rhan produced very little for us. He was a terrible reader of play and was often out of position because of ill timed runs backwards when he should have stayed put. No issue with endeavour but that is not the point. I have no memory of him tearing a game up for us. Yes he had the odd quarter but that was it. He was not that good a crumber. When Brown or Bradshaw were double teamed Rhan was rarely effective.

When he was on, his speed made his forward pressure and tackling a real benefit, he chased and brought down guys, kept the ball inside the 50, which was great even when he wasn't scoring goals.

Unfortunately, he has done little of this for quite a while....

Got it in one John. He has talent, but he is a small forward, but hasn't improved in the areas needed to play that position. Even though he is young, he has been on the list a few years now, but hasn't really got any better football wise. I said in a post earlier that its his mental skills that lets him down. Also his commitment has some question marks over it, and thats something that is vital if a player needs to improve. Got to be committed to improve yourself as a player.
