Is there any merit in saying to someone like cupido (that may have matured a bit) - You've got twelve months to get to certain AFL fitness or target presented to them with the thought of putting them on the rookie list and see where it goes from there. Drafting after this year is going to be a rough ride and all angles need to be considered... even past rejects that have seen the light (bit like Voss's trading strategy I guess)...... Or is this where TBD whips out a 'Do Not Want' pic.

Considering that earlier this year West Adelaide sacked Cupido, terminated his contract and sent him back to Victoria over an ongoing gambling problem, I'm not sure he's worth the punt at this stage, even if he does now realise what he has lost. He has hardly done anything of note in the few years he spent in the SANFL with West Adelaide and South Adelaide (a league he should dominate on talent alone), and has definitely gained weight since his AFL days (and he wasn't the fittest looking guy to begin with), so he's unfortunately well and truly on the footy scrapheap now I think.

Fair call.

I forgot to mention as well that West Adelaide and South Adelaide have pretty much been the worst sides in the SANFL in recent years - they were wooden spooners for 4 consecutive seasons from 2005-2008, and missed the finals in 2009 as well.

Clearly they need all the talent they can get, so if West (and South, for that matter, who aren't exactly successful themselves) didn't want Cupido, then he really is too far gone to consider.

Polak set to be offered new Tiger contract.

How is this relevant?

The 25-year-old has received a major, if indirect, fillip from the AFL Commission, which on Monday passed recommendation allowing two mature-age rookies to be included on every club's list regardless of how many games they had played.

Under several changes approved by the commission on Monday, the rules have been relaxed to allow an extra two rookies on to every club's list, with mature-age rookies allowed not only to have played an infinite number of senior games but also paid over the odds in rookie terms. Any contract worth more than the minimum rookie payment would result in the additional money being included in the total player payments.

Rookies from 2010 will be allowed to remain on an AFL club's list for three years and the minimum required delistings of three players per club would result in a rookie being allowed to be included in one of the three footballers replaced on a senior list.

Given those changes I would rookie Hooper for 1 year on the base $30,000 and let him know in no uncertain terms it was his last chance. He did spend a chunk of the end of the season injured and ran riot in the ressies in his come back then fell asleep when he was recalled. A year with McRae could help and if not we scratch him for good. A good chat with our old mate Cupido could be good for him too.

I may have missed some discussion but I thought he was still under contract for next year on the $300,000 and the delisting would just mean we were paying him out. However, rookie listing him under that rule would mean that we only have to factor in half that salary for the cap. Good pick up HMcH

Agreed. Nice pick-up.

Interesting call. Would think it unlikely, but we'll see soon enough.

Perhaps if we don't snare Ball he may get a lifeline (obviously based on salary cap freedom rather than like-for-like replacement)...

I wasn't sure whether we could pay out his old contract then rookie him under fresh terms given the old contract had been severed or if we'd have to honour the original agreement if he played on in a different capacity. I'd rather pay him $30K a year & pull the comfort rug from under him if we could. Might make him wake up to himself and give him a serious look at what he has to lose without him being lost to the club beforehand. If someone else wants to take a punt on him for more than that then no biggie.
