After a terrible 2007, Richmond caved into pressure and sacked coach Terry Wallace. Less than two weeks later, Richmond hired inexperienced Brisbane legend Michael Voss. Speaking to his first conference as an AFL coach, Voss said he was extremely excited at the prospect of coaching Richmond from the depths of the ladder, to finals football.

"I really do think we have a great chance at finals football. I dont think there is anything wrong with the squad overall, obviously there is some deadweight there, but the general shape is pretty good."

Voss has drawn up an advanced off season training run. Hopefully to address the Tigers lack of strength and weight.

Matthew Richardson has today been named the Captain of the Richmond Football Club, and will lead them out in their first hitout against Geelong in the Nab Cup Opener.

Coach Michael Voss explained that he thought Richo was the right man for the job.

"Hes the best player at the club, the most passionate, a club legend. Im surprised he hasnt been named captain before now"

Chris Newman was named Vice Captain.

Richmond has named an inexperienced squad to take on the Cats in tonight's Nab Cup Opener.

B: Casserly, Thursfield, King
HB: McMahon, Rance, Raines
C: Cotchin, Coughlan, Tambling
HF: Conners, Richardson, Morton
F: Brown, Riewoldt, Pettifer
R: Simmonds, Deledio, Foley
INT: Graham, Newman, Polo, Jackson, Collins, Pattison

Michael Voss today said he was excited to see some of the youth getting a proper game of AFL footy, and while the side he fields will be mostly made up of younger bodies, Voss said there would obviously be inclusions.

Troy Simmonds, Nathan Brown and Mark Coughlan will play. All three requested games to try and get themselves fit for the season proper. While Jordan McMahon and Mitch Morton are both lining up for their first games in Yellow and Black.

When asked about the recent draftees, Voss replied "Trent and Alex will both definatley play. Dean Putt is a toss up, its between him and Angus Graham right now"

Voss also hinted that several players would be thrust straight into important positions to see how they cope.

"Rance will start at Centre Half Back, Riewoldt at Full Forward, Trent Cotchin might start on the ball, we'll see how we go"

The Tigers enter the game as underdogs at $3.10 for the win, against the 2007 champions Geelong.

Tigers Account for Geelong

In the opening game of the Nab Cup, Richmond has defied the odds to defeat Geelong by 27 points at Telstra Dome this evening.

Geelong lead in the opening two quarters, before enthusiasm in the Tigers young bodies fired, and left the Cats in the dust.

Michael Voss said he was thrilled by the performances of his players. Particularly Nathan Brown, Troy Simmonds and Mark Coughlan (who kicked the Tigers only supergoal) all returning from serious injuries.

The goals were evenly spread for the Tigers with Pettifer kicking 4 goals, Conners, Morton and Riewoldt kicking 3 a piece as well as Foley and Brown snagging two. Richo and Deledio chipped in with goals as well.

"Its a great sign that players like Richo and Deledio can have quiet games and we can still win, i was rapt with the performance of the younger bodies tonight"

For the Cats, Justin Longmuir opened the flood gates with 8 majors, and Matthew Scarlett played forward to great effect, and ended up kicking a bag of 5.

Richard Tambling was the major player for the Tigers, setting up goals and getting 20 touches.

The Tigers play the Blues in next weeks clash, also at Telstra Dome.
