Completely overrated due to his 2008 season and being a likeable guy.

For the majority of his career he was a massive massive disappointment and underachiever.

Do you know anything about football? even if you didn't like him you cannot hide the fact that he was a superstar, and 800 goals is a bloody fair effort.
Shit team, shit luck with injuries, yet still managed to be as good as he was. So what if he shanked a fair few, Nick Riewoldt does as well but he's still a champion.

I am entitled to my opinion. I think he is overrated.

An average player for a decade leading up to 2008.

Being in a shit team does not stop you kicking goals. Fev won a Coleman with the wooden spooners, Riewoldt this year in a team that finished 15th, Brown in 2007 while Brisbane were bottom 8, Lockett kicked a shitload of goals in average sides, etc etc.

You are entitled to your opinion yes, sorry.
But it's a little harsh though.
St Kilda were ok for a few years whilst plugger was running amuk, and lets not put these two in the same category shall we.
Richo carried Richmonds attack for a decade without any decent help, whereas Lockett had Loewe with him basically every step of the way.
Fev kicked goals for the blues, but he is not as good as Richo, anywhere near as consistent and nowhere near as good in a pack sitaution or around the ground.

Richo was very inconsistent and not much chop around the ground for most of his career.

2008 is clouding the perception of his career.

I'm not even thinking about 2008, yeah he had a great year but we are talking about his career aren't we?
He had the best hands in the business and was consistently leading contested marking in the comp.... even moreso than the duck! and when he was leading up the ground he would pluck them from anywhere.
Overrated? tell me why he is overrated and what he could have done differently?

One day Richo will kick 15 goals in a match, wait, he retired. Great mark, Shitehouse kick, carried Richmond for over a decade but should have produced ALOT more

Hird was overrated and still is.

To kick 800 goals is an exceptional effort - Richo typefies the ideal footballer - talented, inspiring and humble.

One of the greatest athletes to play the game and one of the best marks. The combination of those two things made him very difficult to play on and allowed him to kick many goals.
Wont be remembered as one of the greatest forwards because he lacked the very essence of what makes a full forward exceptional - precision.

McKenna, Hudson, Lockett, Dunstall and even Lloyd simply didn't miss goals from 30m out directly in front (at least not often). His inability to convert these chances stops him from being thought of as one of the greatest full forwards. However, 50m metres out on the boundary line was another matter....

Holds the record for the most goals of ALL TIME at the M.C.G. This along with the fact he was one of the greatest marks, athletes and blokes in footy history.

Lol just shows you have no idea what you are talking about. Not much chop around the ground but almost won a Brownlow from the wing.

YOU IDIOT!

Say what?

Guzz stop posting. You're an embarassment. You're entitled to your opinion yes but it doesn't make it any less stupid. I know you're probably just trolling like usual but if you truly think Richo was only an average player than it proves how little you know about football. Maybe stick to the Bay mate.

800 goals in shit team. Could easily have been more. Nearly won a Brownlow. Everyone loves him.

How do you rate him? Is he up there with Hird, Buckley, Voss etc???

Reading his book has got me thinking that I seriously underrated this guy.
No, and even though he played on the wing for a season or so doesn't mean he should be compared to midfielders.

Tredrea, Brown, Lloyd, Riewoldt, Hall are all ahead of him.

Likeable guy but his performances were often overrated.

Spot on

Curious to know if theres any correlation between a couple of bitter Essendon supporters and the fact that the Bombers were Richo's bitch. :thumbsu:

Truly a great character of the game - and one of the few in recent times.

Was possibly the greatest wingman the game had seen in a long time - tragically it took Richmond 15 years to wake up to this fact and he showed how good he was by kicking 800 goals as a forward.

What could he have achieved if played in his rightful position?

Why is it that whenever there's a positive Richmond thread in the general AFL board, it suddenly gets dragged down by Essendon supporters?

No-one even mentioned Essendon, yet here you all come...

Careys in a league of his own and Richos definitely not up there with Hird and Voss, maybe closer to Matthew Lloyd in terms of status. Would have to rank close to Lloyd. A modern day great, but not quite an all time great as he wasn't as good as a few others who played forward.
