Richo

Not over their careers, whilst he was at a shit club.

your going to have to elaborate mate!

Fev currently sits on 623 goals
Richo finished with 800 and played in shit sides for 17 years!

Fev turns 30 in january so would have say roughly 2 - 3 years if he's lucky!
He needs another 177 goals to draw even with richo so he really needs to kick 60+ in the 3 remaining years! very achievable for Fev but he needs to get there 1st and as we all know he's on a very thin line!

Back on topic though, i think its fair to say that Richo will be known more as a Richmond Great than an AFL Great!
plain and simple!

Also another stat that no-one has mentioned about Richo, He's the ONLY player in VFL/AFL history to poll Brownlow votes in 17 consecutive years! not bad for someone thats over-rated hey!

Leigh Matthews and Craig Bradley did it too, although Bradley was 22 and already a Magarey winner when he started in the VFL. Ted Whitten also, although he didn't poll in his first year or his final two seasons. Not bad company.

I don't think it's correct to say no one liked Richo until the latter part of his career, I certainly always enjoyed watching him play and kick bags (as long as it wasn't against us) I have fond memories of listening to 3AW in the car on long road trips with Richo either on fire or having a shocker and Rex going off accordingly.

What's probably more relevant and made people like him was the fact that he wore his heart on his sleeve and was public in displaying his anger if a teammate ignored him or stuffed up a pass. This made him the softest of targets for opposition supporters and probably caused you to cop a lot of S$#@ over the years as a result.
Deep down we always admired him. The tragedy is that he was played out of position for so long.

Whilst I agree with you, all other current forwards and past greats do and did exactly the same, but were more controlled then Richo when doing it.
Having said that, if I was 6 foot 5 and 100kg plus and could run and mark like Richo. I'd be having a spit everytime my team mate missed me as much as some of his guys did.

For a player who played in the wrong position, had no-one to kick it to him for almost his entire career and had accuracy issues.....

....he did pretty well then to kick 800 goals, hold the record for the most goals kicked at the MCG, nearly win a Brownlow and have an accuracy comparable to other leading forwards, all the while being the only forward for his team for almost his entire career.

You can discuss, dissect and argue his stats as much as you want...there's only 1 fact that can't be disputed......
Throughout his career he was the most entertaining footballer in the game. Whether you liked or hated the guy, you'd watch him....and football is poorer without him.

How can it not be disputed? There were more entertaining players over his time. I do however agree that football is poorer without him, just as it is poorer whenever a great player departs.

im only 23, but from what i remember he played his best games against poor teams and really struugles in big games. i dont think he is underated or overated he was always third or 4th best key position player every year. Would of loved to see him and jack riewoldt in forward 50 this year

He'd struggle against certain clubs - Geelong and Adelaide come to mind - but had a very good record against e.g. your club, Essendon and Brisbane who were more or less perennial finalists during his career.

Suggest those with short memories read the first half of this article, written at the height of Buddymania.

No, and even though he played on the wing for a season or so doesn't mean he should be compared to midfielders.

Tredrea, Brown, Lloyd, Riewoldt, Hall are all ahead of him.

Likeable guy but his performances were often overrated.

The guys bolded are not ahead of Richo, Brown might get there though if he keeps his body sound

Richo was a very good player. There is no doubt about that.

The thing I didn't like about him, was the fact he used to tear into his team mates when their delivery wasn't up to scratch. Having a club legend publicly chastise them can't have been good for their confidence and wouldn't have helped team cohesion or the individual's chance of improving with their next kick.

Countless times I remember Richo showing anger at his team mates and when he eventually received good delivery, he'd miss the simple shot on goal. Opposition teams would have loved it.

Fair enough. IMO Richo had a champion's talent and heart, but not mind (until late in his career).
