Now look at average & strike rate
And?

If you want to trumpet that his average should be valued higher because of when he did most of his batting, don’t be so stubborn as to ignore the fact that batting where he did, behind four absolute machines and potential all time aussie first or second XI players in Ponting, Gilchrist, Martyn and Hayden, allowed him to score the way he did.
This isn’t Hashim Amla opening the batting averaging 50 and striking at 90 we are talking about. It’s a role player who’s job was to come in and put the hammer down when the innings had been set up. And he did it very well. And showed on occasion that he could also do it when the top order failed as highlighted by his century against Pakistan.

This was a very good batsman. Not a great one.

Only warner beats Symonds in both average & strike rate (& openers generally have higher averages for reasons I mentioned earlier). Statswise his odi record is among very best for Australia.

Except they don’t.

Of the top 20 averages in ODI history of batsman who’ve played at least 30 games, 4 belong to openers (Imam Ul Haq, Amla, Sharma and Shai Hope).

Any other angle you want to try?

The strangest part about all of this is that you’re actually advocating for the merits of a player with caribbean heritage

I'm advocating simply on stats. Ur downplaying based on opinion. Maybe cause you viewed Symonds strictly as an all rounder. Numbers say otherwise.

Pretty much every Aussie opener averaged near or over 40. Border, Waugh, Maxwell etc average closer to 30. Bevan & Hussey are exceptions but very different players.

No I’m not. I’m offering a realistic appraisal of an excellent but not all time great odi batsman.

He was a gem…..he was a larrikin and had smart hands…and sense of humour was legend….
he looked kike that dude from My Fair Lady…I am trying to remember the name …..no matter …..
But I knew him as Symo…..sharp as a tack with his hands….racking up the runs …With all this loss
I need to say I miss you….
