RIP Phil Walsh

Very sad at this - I don't have a good memory of his time with the Pies. Seemed like a great bloke (if a bit eccentric).........hard to know how close he was with his players (differing reports there) but either way I find it hard to imagine the Adelaide boys getting up for this weekend. From there it's hard to see how the AFL can make it work without dropping/rescheduling the whole round.

Tough situation for all - my thoughts are with his family , the Adelaide boys and the Pies around the place who knew him.

RIP Phil.

Well the Collingwood boys played the Week there Close Mate John McCarthy Died - Is this Different then?

To brutally kill your own father and attack your mother you have issues.
Kid's so no to drugs, sounds like something an out of control ice user would do.
I lost my dad when a teenager and yeh there is nothing you can really say when things like this happen.

Magpies fans going to the game tonight should all wear black tape around there arms over there jackets and jumpers wile watching tonight's game. RIP phill

I think it is yeah....................an ex player/mate vs the head coach of a club. I do see your point (and agree to some extent)........my point was more about how I think the AFL/Adelaide might want to handle it. On the surface an existing head coach may be considered harder to cope with than an ex-player/teammate , albeit still close friend with many players.

I totally get what you mean though. Both are equally tragic.

100% Agree. Don’t know why people use Drugs?

a lot wont know of his short career with us - i probably saw every one of his games in 83 - blindingly good first year player.
KB's 400th was his shining light - racing down the members wing time after time - we had found our champion going forward.
then sadly he left in the richmond trade war. one brilliant year.

RIP

Yep, was devastated when he left for richmond after i think only one year at the pies. Was best first year player for us in that year.

Heart goes out to his wife and daughter, they need all the support they can possibly get. A true tragedy of life, some 6 hours later i still find it hard to believe.

RIP phillip walsh

His first season with the Pies was incredible, he would have won the Rising Star if it existed. I recall only one debut season impressing me more in the black and white, and that was another wingman gone too soon, the great number 42. Walsh was immense in KB's 400th, which was one of the biggest games of the 80s. We thought we had the next Schimmelbush. Alas, not to be... a victim largely of both the Pies-Tigers ego wars and ill-fated Carrara Bears. But because I remembered the player as Phillip Walsh I didn't realise it was the same person until a few weeks ago.

It's a great article by Robbo (I know, amazing!) posted above because it gives a real insight into his particular intelligence and how driven he was in all aspects of his life. Interesting that it mentions Bucks because there seems so many similarities in their makeup.

Walsh gave us the Dangerfield-Fyfe matchup because of his simple, pure love of this game... what a treasured gift indeed.

Horrible. Just horrible.
Never know him or even know much about him. What a waste of a life.
Gutted. Feel so sorry for his family.

Woke up in a different time zone to see the news glide over the tv screen - surreal.
It's been many many years now, but Phil and I played basketball together when we were on the same course at Ballarat CAE way back when.
Always a fierce competitor with the cheekiest of grins - he was popular with everyone.
From all reports an inspirational leader.
When I think of his last moments, it's hard to take.
Life is some kind of brew.
RIP, Phil.

I remember Phil fondly. He was the new kid on the block and he made an instant impact, considering how crap we were in 83. He was a great country lad and I remember with Ricky on one wing and Phil on the other things could look up. At the time I spent pretty much 4-5 days a week at the club (thanks to friends who lived in Lulie street) and was fortunate enough to meet him on many occasions. thanks to too many drink cards going around supporters like me often got a few benefits, however Phil didn't drink and I do remember he would stand back in the distance over various goings on with the lads. I also didn't drink much because of medical stuff so we would chat about the crap we would see. He was a top bloke when it came to values in society. I have a friend who dated Phil when in Hamilton and she told me how driven he was even at a young age, hence why he did so well at pies 1st year and Bears later on. The richmond move was just a political thing, it also included John Annear and we got Raines and Cloke and there was no money for anyone else. It still pisses me, because he was on the up and bloody raines just hung out with Colleen. I am sure there were other reasons but it was disappointing.

Well there we go - I hadn't considered that Geelong would split the points with Adelaide but that seems like a sensible outcome. Props to Geelong and the AFL.

But how could that Effect the Ladder at end of the Season?

I weather the Played the Game at a Later Date

Is tonight's game still going ahead? It puts a shadow over the game and i am no where near as excited about tonight. absolute tragic news
