Rivalrys in footy.

Irrespective of ladder positions of the last 2 years, any true supporter without any bias will unequivocally hand the title to Collingwood vs Carlton. Don't be sucked into the Anzac Day clashes etc. Look at the rivalry objectively for what it is worth, 100 years or so.

As much as I hate Carlton, I have respect for the rivalry they have had with Collingwood. These 2 powerhouses will bounce back...

I understand & anticipate a backlash about the fact that I claimed they will return to their powerhouse status, but before you do, be a realist...

Year 10 English Expression. Section C Clear Thinking
Is this a convincing argument ? What techniques has the writer used to put his/her case ? Comment upon the logic used.

Collingwood and Carlton haven't played a final since the 80's - supposedly the basis of all great rivalries.

Given they're 1000-1 at the TAB to meet in this year's GF don't bet on seeing another one soon. :D

I think the Essendon/Collingwood rivalry is a bit overrated.

I'd like to see a rivalry between Port and Carlton, the big dogs of their respective competitions. Looks like Carlton will continue to be crap for a long time though, so I don't hold out much hope.

I'd also like to see a Port vs West Coast rivalry, but neither club has the kind of showponies that would set one up. Which is a shame, because matches between us are always pretty good and controversial in some respect...spear tackles, absolute thrashings, dodgy umpiring, close games, the works.

The funniest rivalry is Hawthorn vs Geelong. They're like two long-time roommates that hate each other, but are both very passive-aggressive. You could almost believe there wasn't a rivalry, until someone says something just a bit too obvious and then its on. Funny.

You are more than entitled to go through your text books to illustrate certain techniques and so forth. Quiet frankly, I am not concerned.

My opinion is what I believe and the fact that I have expressed their lack of success over the last 2 years, does not necessarily weaken my point.

A person like yourself, who demonstrates an apparent high degree of logic should be able to work out why.

What do you think is the best rivalry? I want your own opinion, not 1 out of your Year 10 English Books.

Catch you on the next thread, 2 posts on 1 thread is more than sufficient...

Would have to be:
Collingwood v Carlton
Collingwood v Essendon
Collingwood v Richmond

...... hang on, everyone hates us!!

I actually think Collingwood has slipped in the hate/rivalry stakes.

It really became obvious as long ago as 1990 when large numbers of non Essendon/Collingwood supporters wanted the pies to win the flag, that Collingwood weren't as hated as in the past.

Now I sympathise with their supporters (more their wallets). Collingwood has become the McDonalds of the comp, including the Clown they have for a figurehead :)

Of the lesser hyped rivalries: North Melbourne v Hawthorn.
70's v 80's.
Carey v Matthews
Blue-White v Poo-Wee.
John Kennedy trading clubs.
Arden St v Glenferrie
(Torrid time for opp. fans v quiet as a mouse)

Thommo, are you forgetting the century old Catholic vs Protestant/Money vs Spirit/ Middle class vs Working class rivalry between North and Essendon?

They are our original, traditional nemesis.

Collingwood v Essendon is a manufactured Anzac Day moneyspinner.
.

The rivalry picked up when Essendon moved to the MCG and games between the 2 sides played their were attracting 85k+ before ANZAC day came along.

Yes, Essendon are North Melbourne's biggest rivals, but there is always a big hype whenever North play Essendon... Which is awesome... we hve our first home game v Essendon in 5 years this year..... The Dome will be packed in to the rafters... if only it was at the G... those were the days when North v Ess would pull 70K + :)

The Collingwood - Essendon thing is very recent and based on a commercial blockbuster, not on premierships, traditions and club origins. Collingwood - Melbourne goes back to the '20s, '30's and. especially, the late '50's. The concept of "traditional rivalries" is a marketing tool. Once the game starts, it doesn't matter who is playing who. It's on.

Who said "traditional"?

Me. You can take away the adjective, if you like, though. With or without, it's just a marketing tool.
Unless it is a thread on Bigfooty, then it isn't just a marketing tool. Rivalries do actually exist beyond the hype IMO.

Best Rivalry is, was and always will be Collingwood vs Carlton. The rivalry to end all rivalries.

Adelaide vs Port is always good football, as is the Derby. Essendon vs Carlton, Carlton vs Richmond, Collingwood vs Essendon and Essendon vs Richmond are normally (in Pies vs Dons case, almost always) good value.
