Now onto this absolute blockbuster of a game!
This is somewhat of a new Gold Coast Suns team; now under Stewart Dew and without Gary Ablett, they seem to be playing a more committed and structured brand of football, with additional focus on the defensive side of the game.
Gold Coast comfortably accounted for a relatively depleted Geelong team in JLT1, and followed that up with a hard fought win against Brisbane in JLT2. This likely won’t be a pushover.
Past history
Round 4 @ Etihad:
CARLTON 2.4 6.6 7.7 12.10 (82)
GOLD COAST 3.0 6.1 13.3 17.6 (108)
GOALS
Carlton: Silvagni 3, Casboult 3, Weitering, Fisher, Pickett, C. Curnow, Simpson, Rowe
Gold Coast: Lynch 7, Wright 3, Matera 3, Bowes, Lyons, Lemmens, Ablett
BEST
Carlton: Murphy, Docherty, Marchbank, Silvagni, Casboult
Gold Coast: Lynch, Matera, Ablett, Hall, Witts, Martin, Miller, Fiorini
Round 13 @ Metricon
GOLD COAST 1.1 3.2 7.6 11.7 (73)
CARLTON 4.4 6.8 7.9 12.11 (83)
GOALS
Gold Coast: Lyons 2, Martin 2, Sexton, Matera, Lemmens, Barlow, Martin, Swallow, Wright
Carlton: Thomas 2, Gibbs 2, Silvagni 2, Petrevski-Seton, C.Curnow, E.Curnow, Boekhorst, Wright, Lamb
BEST
Gold Coast: Lyons, Swallow, Barlow, Ablett
Carlton: Gibbs, Simpson, Docherty, Jones, Kreuzer, Murphy, E.Curnow
On examination:
Lynch vs Jones: Not much to be explained here. I don’t want to re-live Lynch vs Rowe, Lynch’s influence simply must be curtailed.
Battle of the young midfields: Gold Coast are reasonably endowed with young midfield talent; Weller, Bowes and Brodie are a talented trio carried by the more senior Lyons, Swallow and Hall (currently injured).
Although, I don’t believe they have the inside strength to match Cripps, Kennedy and E. Curnow, nor the class to overcome Murphy, SPS and Fisher.
Management plan:
I haven't really caught up with what happened at the NB game today, in terms of likely changes.
Apparently Cuningham had a pretty decent game, so he may be in line for selection. Williamson and Lang may or may not come through the VFL.
Pending the fitness of Kreuzer and Kennedy, of course.
Possible ins: Williamson, Cuningham, Lang.
Possible outs: Silvagni (unlikely, but I hate to say it...), Dow (unlikely, but I hate to say it...), Lamb (Jimmae would be ecstatic), Kreuzer (inj), Kennedy (inj)
Impression:
I’m predicting a 3-4 goal victory for Carlton.

On examination:
- Our win in R13 was the result of a herculean performance by Gibbs (43 disposals and 2 goals).
- Jack kicked 5 goals in total against Gold Coast last season; perhaps his pet team for the future?
- Lynch destroyed us in the first iteration, but he met his downfall against Jones the second time around. We’ll need another strong performance by Liam.
