I donated an hour ago and it was at $2500, now around $7000. N. Winmar and a Breen and a Sidebottom have donated as well. Good to see people pulling out the wallet in tough times.
Just donated and its nearly at $14000

I see this as a real opportunity for SaInt’s fans to demonstrate just how special we are, we are already the most resilient and loyal fans in the league, other clubs would be dead or merged with our history, but we are still here. Here is the chance to support one of our own, someone who suffered immensely.

Never knew much about him but wow what an incredibly moving article.

Looking at the clubs socials they're going to react strongly to this.

He was before my time too but he was a legend when I was a kid for all the wrong reasons, my knowledge of him was from the Biffs and Bawler videos from the '90s where his outbursts were ridiculed as almost comically over the top. They removed any context so that they could make him look like he was genuinely mad. No-one ever questioned it, he was made out to be a guy who had no ability to self regulate. His poor image was reinforced in that period, you now see that pushed him further away from having a decent life outside the game.

This article needs to be used by clubs in a systemic way ie all to read, review and show understanding of it. Change is needed.

I think the people who booed Goodes and others just didn't see how recently this kind of abuse was going on. I watched Saints fans racially abusing Trent Dennis-Lane, it still happens now. The article is so confronting because you see the big picture of just how much trauma that things that perpetrators didn't even think about chipped away at him until it broke him. His biggest crime was that he fought back instead of taking it like others had. The warrior was punished for being one against thousands. The people that took it on the chin were allowed to carry on. Goodes found that out too.

Yep Goodes still cops it - the amount of time I've read he was a good footballer but 'I' didn't like the way he treated that girl etc etc.

The amount of abuse that is delivered continues and once someone dare call it out or acknowledge it watch out, the likes of Newman and others will call for them to 'behave'.

The perpetrators of racism and abuse should be called out and we need to learn and improve.

An incredibly heartbreaking story that is difficult to process. An overwhelming sense of sadness is all I can feel at the endless injustices that have happened to Robbie. It is a terrible reflection on our society that exposes the racist culture that has been so prevalent and continues to exist. Hopefully the club and the AFL go to lenghts to make sure he finally gets embraced.

This is tragic beyond anything I can really comprehend, but all I can say is that I'm glad the club have acknowledged it, and I hope they're putting in the work to make up for their lack of action in the past.

Sorry to be a pessimist but I have to ask, who are these people and how can we know the money's going where they claim it is?
I think Mal is a long long term Saints fan.

GoFundme has a guarantee that all the money raised goes to the person who is going to be the recipient. Basically at the end of the campaign if all the money hasn't gone to Robbie its fraud. Big risk to take especially when you have to give up a lot of personal details before you can commence a campaign.

And all this time later its incredible to think players like Eddie Betts has to put up with the sh1t he does on social media

Geez that was tough to read, but a fantastic article.

Clearly our club has made some mistakes along the way, I've got no doubt after the release of that article they'll at least try to make things right.

I missed his career but have obviously read about him and seen his highlight, or more so his low lights.

Such a shame that he has been remembered how he has. This puts a lot of it into perspective.

I reckon if you wanted to educate people on the effects of racism on individuals, that article should be used. I challenge anyone to read that and not change their attitude towards the people they have attacked. You'd have to be a sociopath not to get a lump in your throat reading that. I want to give the guy a hug and I'm a jaded old campaigner.

100%

I'm moving between absolute anger, disbelief and sadness.

I can't put into words how disappointed I am.

Thank you to whom ever created the go fund me. Let's do what the club wasn't prepared to do and go some part to supporting one of our own.

An open and honest article on Robert Muir. I won’t use that nickname - he doesn’t like it.

My daughter just sent me this article.

Talk about gobsmacking. I knew he was racially abused but my god.

What are the STKFC going to do to help this past player?

Or do we just pay lip service to indigenous players?

I did not know anything about Robert Muir.
That is just terribly tragic.
The club needs to reach out to him and bring him back into the fold.
I will be doing the same first thing tomorrow.
I am incensed by this article

Given we couldn't even spell our players names correctly in that action plan and didn't even consult some of our past players, what do you think?

great to see lots of small donations too, for those that don't have much expendable income after rent and bills etc, to throw in $20 is a great effort

It's bloody disgraceful quite frankly. Happy to chuck his photo in the reconciliation plan but didn't even consult him. Meanwhile he contacts the club but never hears back from them.

We have a lot to answer for here. I hope they are very carefully thinking through our response to this and planning that this type of disregard for past players doesn't happen again.

Robbie Muir was a brilliant footballer, if he was playing today he would be heralded as an excitement machine and great to watch. He was fierce at the contest and abundantly skilled. He was a very intimidating player, I know of an Essendon player (a Victorian state of origin representative) that would be absolutely shitting bricks every time they played the Saints. It was a travesty his career was so short and he was essentially pushed out of the game he loved. A big kudos for the fund raiser, lets hope we can get it to its target.

I loved watching Robbie play. For those that were never lucky enough to see him live, he was super- quick, a massive kick (65m plus), a brutal tackler, and he regularly took “hangers” (like the one in my avatar which I saw at Moorabbin against Carlton in 1975).
In 1974/75 he was the most exciting player in the league.

Unfortunately, his opponents would constantly racially abuse him to put him of his game - and it usually worked. I often describe him as ‘Nicky Winmar with an extra 10kg of muscle’.

It sounds like his life is finally on track. Hopefully he can find some sort of peace.
He was great to watch- for the younger folk, maybe I could describe Robbie Muir's football style as a bit like Dangerfield maybe?

Would be nice if that statement included a commitment of financial support

I would imagine that there is a skeleton crew operating social media and such right now. I don't think it would be possible or reasonable to expect them to be able to make any commitments at a moment's notice. The fact that the club was keen to respond indicates to me they plan to recognise it in a meaningful way. We will just need to wait and see.
