The junior talent has hope though, Thomas and Banfield are average players at best.

Yes, however any 18 year old taken will need at least 2-3 years on our rookie list to develop before making that call, especially in a weak draft year with players that have been determined by all clubs to have question marks over them to not consider them in the main draft. The players we have taken will all be able to step right in and show what they can do in 12 months to justify staying with the club before a strong draft next year.

Check. We need every player looking over their shoulder. I have a feeling Gordon and Lloyd will be playing Round 1, and so do they. We have never had that, and we need that. Darrou is a project and insurance for Grimes. The rest will be rabid dogs on a leash.

Who are you dropping? And are they ahead of McDonough, Knights, Lennon and Arnot??

Not dropping anyone, it's a new year...
And I don't think they're ahead of those guys, about equal.

I do have hope for Giles and some for Gordon and Lloyd I just feel we drafted for our VFL team more then our AFL team. If we have drafted for our AFL team then we are going to stunt the development of Helbig, McDonough, Arnot and Dea who are all too good for VFL level and need to be playing AFL to improve but now have to break into a team looking for top 4 (so won't lose very often) plus have guys skipping ahead of them in the pecking order.

Apologies for stating the obvious, but since only 22 of the 44 can play in the senior team at once, the rest have to play somewhere... while I'd have preferred to see one or 2 speculative picks on flawed juniors, they wouldn't be in a position to contribute for years, and the gamble is 'potential' vs 'known commodity'. Of course you want the best 22 playing - the next 22 should be trying to improve to get to the required standard. With a strong VFL side playing structures similar to the senior team, the youngsters in 2014 actually have a better chance of improving (unlike this year when the Coburg team was very poor, listed players stood out but could freelance and learn bad habits because the focus was not primarily on development and playing the same system as the seniors). I'd be quite happy if the players you list can't get a game (I debate their quality on limited exposed form to date, particularly Dea) - because the seniors will be playing very solidly and winning regularly.

I think for young players who get gifted games in the seniors the real risk is destroying their confidence when they struggle at that level and never then believing they are good enough, or being able to adjust when the pressure is on. It's a microcosm of what happened in the Elimination Final, when the whole team was exposed under extreme pressure. I believe the recruitment direction is mirroring the 'Geelong' model for sustained success where the younger players can plug into the seniors at the correct time and are confident in what role they are being expected to do on the field. It's no coincidence to my mind that Collingwood keeps churning out quality looking youngsters, most of who I've never heard of before, who play solidly and look like the players they are replacing. They too have had their own VFL team and their draft picks are no better than the Tigers'.

Surely we as Richmond supporters should understand we need to give players a chance before we make judgement. Likely hood is apart from Lennon the others won't make it to elite/a grade level but give them a pre season and a few nab games before we make judgement. I haven't been on this forum for too long but i would have liked to have read peoples posts when we recruited Maric, Houli, Grigg and Morris. Along with Lennon if one or two of the other players recruited plays regular consistent footy than i will call this draft a win.

I know its personal opinion but i feel Gordon and Miles will play senior footy next year. That doesn't mean our club has gone backwards. I will view it that our development team has done a great job in improving these players in a new enviroment. FWIW i feel we could use Thomas against the bigger bodied teams, we could use his aggression and body size in the stoppages. Would be the ideal Sub actually add some core strength to our stoppages as the younger midfielders tire.

A PLAYER like Miles was always going to be culled by GWS after two years by sheer weight of numbers. You can't have so many first round picks for two and three years and not get rid someone. He weas a victim of that and what I saw was he was better than a few so called more prominent selections.
As far as recruiting goes, I defended in particular our use of the rookie draft to add experienced players who help increase depth vigorously and still think it's the way to go. Petterd was a good pick up and was rewarded this year, Big O was a good back-up when called upon (and will be again) and Lonergan was handy enough, but remember only played when we were in real need of a player like him when injuries hit. I think the recruiters are doing great guns. On face value the drafting of Gordon and Lloyd might seem questionable, but it's obvious the draft was as shallow as a blow up pool and that was again reinforced in the rookie draft. Have faith!!!

Looks to me like we didn't rate the depth in this draft and were busy setting up our VFL team. Tried to get a few good VFL players that can just step into the AFL team if needs be. Not stars but useful players. I suspect that this is an aberation, one off setting up the squad for a different situation next year. Also gives us flexibility for delisting next year for what is supposed be a good draft. I'm dissapointed in not getting more youth. But they used the rookie draft for exactly what they said they would - older guys to play roles. Interesting that they targeted small forwards with some midfiled capability. That presumably says the footy dept sees a problem there. Overall I see this as part of the 5 year list building plan. We'll see if this allows younger guys a better development environment. Hopefully some will play AFL and show us good drafting.

Miles can play as a tagger. No need to waste Conca in that role if Miles comes on. But, do we actually play a tagger on a regular basis?
Has been a beef of mine with the side for a few years Tigs. We have never had anyone on the list capable of doing it IMO, and it was a big weakness. Some may argue Jacko, but I never saw him as being competent in that area, like a Duncan Kellaway for instance, who could lock down any opposition player.

Adding Miles and Thomas will add a bit to the side, IF they can do the job regularily on opposition mids. Happy for them to be given a shot at it at least.

I will certainly not argue with you as I havent seen him, but Carnell was named in the best very other week???

Don't get me started on who the hell was listing the bests, had me scratching my head more than once.
My breakdown of Carnell was that he always tried to do waaaaaaaaaaaay too much. Getting caught and butchering the ball. Occasionally, yes, it would work kicking the odd inspirational goal or an inspiring bit of play. But mostly it was embarrassing to see the difference between his perceived abiltity to his atual ability. But that's just my opinion.

P.S. It wasn't that hard to get into the bests in that team:(
