I was just looking over the AFL webiste and looking over all the delistings.

Alot of younger players have been shown the door early in there careers, leaving the door open to rookie list them. I have assesed the players and put these players forward as options to rookie list in 2009.

Daniel O'Keefe
Ex Sydney Swans
Former First Round (Pick No. 15) selection 2006 National Draft.
184cm
80kg
MIDFIELDER/DEFENDER
Geelong Falcons

O'Keefe has good pace and finds plenty of the ball, was widely regarded as one of the best users of the ball in his draft year (2006). One player I would look at offering a rookie spot too.

Guy O'Keefe
Ex Western Bulldogs
Former Fourth Round (Pick No. 63) selection 2007 Draft.
185cm
76kg
MIDFIELDER
Geelong Grammar

A lightly framed but tough inside midfielder who had an outstanding year at the Western Bulldogs affiliate Williamstown where he finished 4th. He kicked 24 goals playing as an inside midfielder whilst also playing as a forward at times. Without playing a game, he is still eligible to be rookie listed and another who I would seriously consider.

Kade Klemke
Ex Essendon Bombers
Former Fourth Round (Pick No. 50) selection 2008 Rookie Draft.
180cm
75kg
DEFENDER
Murray Bushrangers

Has already been delisted, but I would of thought that he was an outside chance of being re rookied. Has all the attributes to make it as an AFL player, but just needs to get it all together, mentally and physically.

Cameron Wight
Ex Western Bulldogs
Former Fourth Round (Pick No. 49) selection 22 National Draft.
200cm
97kg
DEFENDER
Calder Cannons

A big hefty unit, Wight has only managed 10 games, and could be the answer for us to allow Hurley to play forward if required. I would like to think that the Essendon Football Club could help him to get over his injuries that he has had previously and make a play as an AFL player.

Orren Stephenson
North Ballarat Rooster (VFL)
201cm
103kg
RUCKMEN
Redan

Orren was the standout non AFL aligned ruckmen in the VFL this year, and was subsequently named in the VFL team of the year as the ruckmen. He should win a place on a list somewhere.

Cameron Wight
Ex Western Bulldogs
Former Fourth Round (Pick No. 49) selection 22 National Draft.
200cm
97kg
DEFENDER
Calder Cannons

What's wrong with Cale Hooker? You must have a lot of faith in him if you think some unproven spud is the answer.

How old is Stephenson? Because that is exactly what we need. Do not, please essendon, do not draft another 18yr old ruckman. Unless they are as talented as Ryder or Natuini, it is a waste of time. They won't be ready for a good 4-6yrs. Get a ready made 24yr old VFL, WAFL whatever ruckman who will be servicable as a backup. We have Hille and Ryder as the preferred options, Laycock and Bellchambers as ready to go backups, and Bock as the project, we do not need to waste a National Draft pick on another ruckman.

Getting a VFL or WAFL ruckman would be a waste of a pick. They're no good! Tristan Cartledge was in the VFL rep side one year... Cam Cloke far far far too good for that level... Chris Bryan dominates. Does that tell you anything about the grade?

If Wight was any good whatsoever the Doggies would have held on to him. They're not flush with talls.

Personally I would be pretty happy if we rookied another ruckman.

Fair call, however from everything I read (and I emphasise read, because I only get to see VFL), the WAFL and SANFL are both superior to our state league. Especially when it comes to finding mature-aged pick-ups such as Sam Fisher or Shane Tuck.

It seems to be a goldmine for WA and SA clubs in finding undsicovered talent.

There is something about being 197+cm that makes guys uncoordinated & often slow to develop even an average level of skill. Good ruckman are very hard to find & it seems that they are more likely to be spuds than not.

I agree that a mature age ruckman could be part of the solution.
I think that Cox was Rookie listed & Mumford was a mature ager.

The VFL seems like a good comp for small fwds but not ruckman - lets look at the WAFL & Sanfl for them.

Just how many project bigman have the Bombers had that have turned out tk be spuds?

I agree about Majak Daw... if he is around in the rookie draft i would take him in a heartbeat!

Its interesting that clubs have delisted a lot of younger and untried players considering the state of the drafts over the next few years. I know the Cats delisted pretty much all their 2007 draftees as well.

Edit: Quoted the wrong post. Sorry to all concerned.

Yeah wed be much better off going for VFL players than other club rejects, or our own rejects:confused:

If my memory is correct, Dean Cox came off the rookie list. The logic in looking at a 24 year old ruckman as back up to the 4 we already have, well i certainly cant pretend Im seeing it. I cant see the problem in looking into an 18 year old who will develop in 4-6 years time. We have plenty of ruckmen in the meantime. This is the perfect time for a club to look into youth.

Would we be better off going for young players who needed time to develop if we didnt have any ruckman?

Aaron Davey, Maxwell, Mitchell as well as the Bulldogs having four in there prelim side in Morris, Hudson, Picken, Boyd off the top of my head have come straight out of the VFL.

I think that if you have read that the WAFL or the SANFL are far superior leagues to the VFL that the person that has writen that is probably from that state.

As well as McIntosh and Nahas from Port Melbourne ( Davey there as well).

I have a question for Ant.

It was announced today that Richmond have delisted project ruckman Dean Putt.
I remember leading up to the 2007 draft a lot of people on here were hoping for the EFC to draft Putt with our last pick in the National Draft. When he was snapped up by Richmond we took Hooker, much to many's disappointment.

Would Putt be worth looking at adding to our rookie list? I have not seen anything of him since his pre-draft footage, so have no knowledge on his (failed) AFL career so far, but in '07 this guy was spoken about as a pretty promising long-term (3-5 years IIRC) mobile ruckman.

What are your thoughts?

I can kinda answer this, because I have a few mates that played with him this year at Coburg.

Dean Putt, is fast and nimble for a ruckman- but he is a dud in the ruck.

Because Putt was so inefficient in the ruck, they trialled him as a Key position player rather than in the ruck. He played a few games as a CHF and didnt really do much either.

There are definately better options then him.

Lets just say i was glad Richmond took him. Did not really rate him.

question to whoever actually knows anything about Majak Daw (ie youtube clips dont really count) but what is the chances of us actually picking him up in the rookie draft/would we want to/would it he be a consideration for pick 33 in a weak draft? there is alot of talk about him but i have no idea how good/bad he really is...

Should be drafted as he has a bit to work with but he is very raw and has some serious question marks on his ability to read the game at a higher level and know where to work around the ground.
At the moment he is very good at reading the play when it is coming straight in at him and he has a bit of pace , a very good leap and strong hands .
Pick 33 may be a bit unrealistic. Someone may take a punt on him in the 4th or 5th round but i would think there is no way he would not get pickedup in the rookie draft.

Any ways guys, back on topic.

Who, from the delistees would 'you' have a look at?

I personally would like us to have a look at Guy O'Keefe, a tough inside clearance winner who has kicked a bunch of goals at VFL level.

Daniel O'Keefe from the swans, a good ball user who has not been able to get his body right, was a high draft pick who just needs time on the park.

Anyone else from the delistees guys??

thanks in advance

One thing to consider is the rules have changed for the rookie list. Off the top of my head i can not tell the exact limits but i do know that clubs can mature age rookies that have played a bit of AFL footy.
I know that Richmond are looking to rookie Polak. There must be some sort of special clause for players with long term injuries or something similar.
