Depending how much one trusts the media. it was Dan's decision a) to leave and b) to drop Melbourne not vice versa.

Tom Morris has said that Port has told any prospective suitor they have to match Melbourne's offer of two x first round - and he says Melbourne were offering this year's and next year's first - or forget it.

The party here with the power is Port. There's only one place he can play if Port's valuation is not met.
This would usually be true.

However we have also seen that once Port tell a player they will get them where they want to go they usually follow through even if the return isn't that great.

Interesting. What would be St Kilda's motivation in leaking that?

Houston and Jack Silvagni are good mates. I'm not exactly sure who told who what, but the bottom line is Steve found out Dan wanted to move back to Melbourne, tried to get him to the Saints and Houston's manager said "thanks but no thanks."

Steve then leaked it to the media out of nothing more than spite. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, old Steve-o.

You would think if he didn't leak it then the Saints would be in with a chance again now that Melbourne is out

Houston's case is unique though. He's contracted until the end of 2027, he was elevated to the leadership group and is genuinely wanted at Port. I don't think we've seen any player off we haven't been willing to let go to at least some extent apart from Josh Carr in 2004. And if there's no contingent player linked coming in a trade to Port, we have no need to consider making a trade work the other way.

Cal Twomey thinks if we land Cumming and Perryman as free agents we would be more willing to let Houston go, but still thinks he will cost significant draft capital.

"He wants to get back to Victoria, Port Adelaide has been aware of that and they're in to Harry Perryman and Isaac Cumming. So if they bring those two free agents in, it makes it lot easier to let him go and bring in some pretty strong draft capital for him.

"This is a guy who could be a back-to-back All-Australian, he'll be top three in the best and fairest again. He's in his absolute prime so I'd expect other clubs to jump in and see if they can get involved."

We are absolutely in the box seat here and have no need to make concessions.

I'll just spell it out for the mildly illiterate among us.

Motivation to leave Port = not based on money, based on wanting to return to Victoria

Motivation to choose specific Victorian club over other Victorian clubs = largely based on money

Hope that's not too complicated for you.
All the reports have been that he signed a long term contract probably lower than his current value, and Port have been unwilling to renegotiate, hence his desire to move back to Melbourne, where he can earn his worth.

Of course I don't know all the facts, but it sounds like it's money driven to me. I can't imagine why he would sign a 5 year contract if he already had thoughts about returning home.

And who cares if it is anyway, it's a job after all. Loyalty in football is unfortunately a relic of the past if we are being honest with ourselves, and that goes both ways.

How do we know that Port have told Dan Houston that? Houston has three years on his contract and that gives Port a lot of currency. All I have heard are a few big mouths in the Victorian media who already have Dan back in Melbourne. When I hear, 'I want to go to a Melbourne club' from Dan Houston or his management I will believe it.

If it does get to a trade 2 x first round picks is a fair ask.

They're obviously going to talk tough at this point but it'll be interesting to see what happens when push comes to shove.

As far as I'm concerned, if a player doesn't want to play for your club then get what you can for them and bring in someone that does want to play for the club.

What if all we can get is a pick in the teens though, would you still do that? I would hope that we wouldn’t.

Carlton have pick 10 and a future first. They would have to be salivating at the thought of Houston kicking to Curnow and McKay.

Release Crazy Vossy!

Yeah but if you continually fold at the trade table, you develop a reputation as being pushovers.
We're not giving him away for **** all because he'd prefer to be in Melbourne.

Whichever club wants him, it's up to them to make the running. There's only one way out for him and that's at the trade table.
