If the reporting around this is at all reliable, it does sound like WC are getting ready to have a big sniff at Lobb.

I'm bracing for the overpaying.

WC: We really, really, really want Lobb. And we need him.

GWS: OK. Two first-rounders.

WC: Nah. Let's negotiate. We're super reasonable when it comes to trading. Let's talk.

GWS: ....
2 first rounders not enough, apparently.

This is what will happen if Lobb requests a trade

WC: We want Rory Lobb
GWS: He's contracted and loves it here.
WC: But his manager has informed us that he wants to come back to perth.
GWS: He loves it here and we won't discuss it until he is out of contract.

To be honest I would give up 2 first rounders for Lobb based off this season, but wouldn't have based off McCarthys 2015. The versatility and contested marking of Lobb gives him a bit of extra appeal to lead a forward line. Also Eagles would still have him behind Kennedy and Darling, so he wouldn't take the best defender, whereas McCarthy would at Freo so I guess that would limit output during the developmental years?

What is going to happen to Lycett though? Kennedy, Darling, Lobb, Lycett, Naitanui (late 2017 onwards) seems top-heavy when they could boost their midfield?

So I've got a bet going with my mate. I get a carton if Lobb comes to Freo. He thinks he'll be "lining up" with the eagles next year. Who's drinking and laughing after trade week?

GWS fans?

This far out both dont drink in my opinion.

That's what I meant?

GWS fans having a drink laughing at WC and Freo fans.

This part is hilarious:

He is believed to be on a low pay scale despite emerging through his 21 games this season as one of his exciting young side's most important.

Of course he'd be on a low pay scale! He was a speculative second round pick who hadn't done much of anything before re-signing, or indeed this year. The author makes it sound like it's a surprise.

What do you (or others) think?

Everyone likes to give Freo a good bash, especially for the offers we have and haven't offered but I'm interested to see what people think will get it done for the Eagles.

Barrass + Eagles 2016 1st?
I hope we don't trade Barrass. He could fill a key defensive post for a decade. He's 20 and will arguably be our first-choice FB in 2017, depending on how optimistic people are about Mackenzie's future.

I have some misgivings about the wisdom of chasing Lobb, given he's contracted and will therefore require a premium to shake loose. Maybe two first-rounders for Lobb + pick 20-something coming back the other way?

Like I said, if WC are putting together that kind of deal for a contracted player, I'd rather we were targeting a blue-chip midfielder. Naitanui's injury aside, the ruck division and key forward stocks have not been areas of weakness for WC. The midfield, on the other hand, has been.

At a guess Pick 25 + Lobb for West Coasts first this year and next (guessing you'll finish the same next year) values Lobb at pick 8.

I'm not sure if that would be enough.

Yeah, give or take.

Any more than that and I hope WC don't pursue it. Even at that rate it's too rich for my liking. How can a club justify giving up more than that for a guy who's played 30 games? It's not like Lobb is an established star.

I think Rory should sit down with a guy who got down to 80 kilos to ride BMX, and talk to him about being a country boy and living in Sydney versus an AFL-mad city.

Dude, that's basically what Collingwood paid for Treloar and Treloar is a far more complete package than Lobb. I thought the Pies overpaid for him but he has proved to be worth every penny

No way I'd sell my future on a forward-ruck/someone who is in the same ball park as Lycett basically.

Has Lobb ever played as a number one ruck or number one key forward? He's been sheltered his whole career by Mumford, Cameron, Patton, Tomlinson and McCarthy etc

Yeah, WC will overpay. Also, Lobb is contracted, whereas Treloar wasn't.

Treloar is elite though

I did think he wasn't worth that much last year, but he definitely was

Look at what Port gave up for Dixon for example last year, he was OOC and theres no way he was worth a 1st and 2nd rounder yet he's a far better/far more established footballer than Lobb imo.

These expansion clubs should not dictate terms on what a player is worth and unfortunately rival clubs are bending over to them which is forcing the prices to go up astronomically
