Ross Glendinning Medal

I have no issue if it is renamed the Glendinning Allan Medal (or something similar) but the timing sucks. Not sure of the discussions in the background but things have changed for Freo. They do have a longer history now and another name may be more reflective of that. I like tradition but if Freo don't feel it has relevance to them anymore, why not change it? But really, this should have been sorted out long ago and privately. Both teams being d#cks about it it seems.

None played for Freo, or are you going on tradition?
So one medal is ok to hand out for someone who had nothing to do with your club, but thats ok because traditionally they had something to do with Fremantle.
On the other hand its ok because someone doesn't have anything to do with your club anymore, its ok to throw away 25 years of history.

Choose a side of the fence and stick with it.

Glendinning was never a champion of our club nor was he anything of note in establishing Fremantle FC. He was a selector!

I agree with Nisbitt in that we shouldn't have agreed to naming it Glendinning in the first place, but our hands were somewhat tied in that he worked for us at that time.

We were young and had no history.

The time to part ways with the Eagles predominantly medal is fair. The greater question is why aren't the Eagles remotely interested in any change? They just talk about tradition themselves, yet go away from that fact when deciding to just give it to their best player from now on.

It seems like they simply couldn't get past a name alteration.

The best on ground in the Grand Final is given a medal named after a former Melbourne coach. Seems pretty irrelevant to every other club. Better change that.

The league's fairest and best is given an award named after a former Geelong administrator. Fair enough if Danger keeps winning them but for anyone else it's pretty irrelevant. Change that one too.

Collingwood and the Bulldogs play for the Robert Rose Trophy every year. Rose played 150 games for Collingwood and coached them for a decade. He also coached the Bulldogs for four seasons. Doesn't truly represent both clubs though, surprised the Bulldogs don't want it changed.

There it is.

Agree 100%.

Not sure why Eagles won't alter.

Sounds like two rival CEO's have instigated a dick measuring contest among themselves. Something that should have been kept behind closed doors is becoming bigger than Ben-Hur and has taken away from what we should be talking about, the upcoming game.

Poor form from both clubs in my opinion...

HAHA what did Doig do? Wasn't a champion of your club. Didn't do anything of note establishing Fremantle FC. Played for other football teams!

And you named your club champion medal after him. Stolen history from a pathetic club without any.

So we should never have moved from subiaco oval or named it domain, crazy clark or whatever oval because someone who played there 30 years ago is upset???. Get over it - You cannot have a derby medal named after someone that never played in one. It needs to represent club champion players from both teams. Call it the Worsfold - Pavlich medal or Jakovich-Pavlich medal. That is a true compromise and represents the best of both teams. Ross only played for 2 years - may as well call it the Tom Swift medal.

Cool, but I ain't even fussed.

I don't mind if it's called Doig or nothing. Same goes with the Glendinning, only it seems you and many others have their knickers in a knot over what has now come out as being somethnig the Eagles won't budge on.

Anyway, like I've already said you can still honour Glendinning with the medal. Your club has come out and said they'll continue to do so. So again, no need to be angry, You get to keep your tradition.

What's the problem here exactly? Simpson has said you'll keep the Glendinning medal. Glendinning means nothing to Freo and since leaving his brief stint as a selector has been derisive of Freo. Why would they want to play for a medal named after someone they don't respect? Freo tried to get the name changed to something more impartial, Eagles wouldn't have it and wanted to keep the Glendinning medal for their own club award. You've still got the thing.

Yep that is my big issue with all this. IF Freo wanted to change this with the new stadium then fair enough but that should have been brought up late last year after the fixtures were released and give both clubs time to come up with a solution.

It would have fit nicely at the time. Welcome a new era of footy in WA with a new, more universally accepted name for the medal. Give the fans a chance to pitch in with some suggestions. Make it a positive process rather than an embarrassing debacle.

Couldn't care less re the name - but the timing and execution smacks of deeply ordinary governance from the purples. I'd be worried about their internal decision-making processes if I was a (just a) fan (and/or obsessed).

In Freo's defence, maybe this has been on their agenda all year but they're only just getting to it now after spending the last few months trying to bury the sexual harassment incident.

Why name a medal after a person that has never played in a derby? Ross doesn't really represent the history of AFL in WA. He came here at the end of his VFL career and played just 2 years. Well before Freo joined the competition. He has never played in a derby and he is far from being a champion of west coast. I would much prefer to see a champion of WA footy such as John Todd. Or a joint medal such as Jakovich/Pavlich.

Time to move on
George Doig never played for the Fremantle Dockers.......

Tom Swift won a Brownlow??

Just name it the Masten-Suban medal and get over it.

The GST Cup ....every year the PM can award the medal and then laugh at us as a collective state.
