Sholl is the type of player that gets 20 disposals but I don't notice him at all. Apart from a great first year, he has really struggled.

A bit harsh , was on fire early last year . Then was flattened and was tired

Has started pre season ok , we prob looking for a bit more competitiveness and size in Hinge

Don’t write him off though , at least has 2 weapons - endurance and kicking

Size and competitive issues aren't going to go away anytime soon. We aren't good enough to carry at Atkins type at this stage of our rebuild.

I'd love him in 3 or so years when we are hopefully challenging so he can use his laser foot.

Yep he’s still young

You’re better off having a couple of weapons and some weaknesses to work on rather than just be solid amongst all traits IMO

At least he brings things to the team

I am wondering who we have for cover if one of our tall backs goes down with an injury. I am sure this and many scenarios are weighed up when it comes to choosing our emergency sub.

History says Doedee!

Interestingly, Freo’s team has a very similar profile to our team. Only 9 players with 50+ games under their belt, the same as us. They have 9 first round draft picks compared to our 8 first rounders.

Their Kids are about 12 months more advanced than our Kids. They have no debutants and two sub-10 game players compared to our 3 sub-10 gamers and two debutants.

IMHO our experienced guys are better than their 50+ gamers with Fyfe, Taberner and Darcy absent.

No Excuses!!!!

Sitting next to Fog, Berg, Schoenberg and another I don't recognise at the Queen St cafe. Wondering if I should inform them of bigfooty consensus that two of them are on verge of delisting.

Talls are rarely, if ever, the emergency sub. It’s a numbers game, you’re most likely to need to cover a non-tall. The most specialised and hardest to replace position is ruck but you’ve not seen a ruckman as a medical emergency.

Just my opinion, obviously. I think he’s too one-paced to be an effective outside player. Too weak in the contest to be inside. I hope he proves me wrong.
More important for an outside player to be able to run all day & have good kicking skills of both feet.

No argument that Sholl won't be an inside player.

We could throw Himmelberg in defence if needed.

This narrative that Sholl's second half of 2021 was putrid because was "tired" seems like wishful thinking to me. I think it was more a case of opposition teams putting more work into him. For a team that lacks footskills like Adelaide, Sholl should be one of the first priorities for opposition teams.

True, agree with that . Able to expose him a bit … but he was also playing out of his skin early

We all want us to play the young blokes but we can’t then hang them in their 3rd year if they aren’t finished product

5th year is different

Yeah certainly not going to hang the kid, I think he's shown a lot of promise. I just think arguing that he was tired is going too far the other way. It's showing favouritism. If it were a less popular player fading out of games, people wouldn't be saying it was fatigue.

We only play talls as sub if they're injured and need 40 minutes to warm up.

Early days but he strikes me as a player better suited to a higher level

He looked pretty unimpressive in the SANFL upon his return from injury last season but within a short time period was playing composed AFL football.

Some players just have "it" - his first few games were well ahead of what guys like Sholl, Jones, Hamill, McHenry and even Schoenberg dished up from a composure point of view. Most players take a while to get up with the speed but he was there already. Which is rare

I hope he's not absent for long (and don't expect him to be)

Cook grew into his first campaign, but it was hot and cold. However, we're talking about a kid who kicked 4 against one of the grand finalists, so it's not like we put him in the AFL despite his form.

It certainly matches with what we saw, seeing his TOG decreased markedly as the season went on.

I doubt other teams cared too much about what our individual players were doing to be honest, outside of Laird, Tex, Seedsman and Smith.

That might be less concerning, I wouldn’t be too worried about a 3rd year play not handling a tag. Greater support and more skillful player options would fix half the problem.
