Autopsy Round 1: Richmond v Williamstown @ Burbank Oval - 2pm Sunday, 10/04/16

Spent the afternoon at a windy Williamstown Oval watching the reigning VFL premiers up against Richmond VFL coming off a 12+ goal loss to Essendon in our last practice match. Thoughts on AFL listed players:

Broad - nice enough game without really standing out. Plenty has been said about his poor kicking and you'd think the wind would play havoc but he was pretty solid today. Plenty of good work attacking the contest too.
Batchelor - played the generals role down back along with Darley. Showed some good leadership early in the game when Markov made a simple error leading to a Willy goal explaining what he did wrong and what he should have done. Obviously carrying a leg injury of some sort as he was constantly limping. Still when it was time for him to go he'd go.
Hunt - after a mare last week against the Pies on the G, he was probably our best outside midfielder today. Plenty of linking up through the midfield and providing an option for the defenders when rebounding. Not much of the stop start footy we saw last week either.
Castagna - played midfield/forward and was involved in plenty. Good in traffic and got on the end of some footy to kick a couple of goals. Hopefully they persist with him up the ground as his run and carry could be quite handy.
A.Moore - was hard at the contest all day and constantly at the bottom of packs fighting for the ball. At the quarter/three quarter time breaks he was one offering up a fair bit of feedback and advice on what the mids needed to do to get back in the game. Overall my best player for us today.
Marcon - started slowly as he looked to be playing a run with role early on before being released to hunt the footy and hunt it he did. Was constantly getting hands on the ball in packs and trying to feed it out or was laying tackles to stop Willy getting away.
McBean - double teamed the whole game which shows how much respect Willy had for him compared to Griffiths/Chol. Kicked his 2 goals and fought hard to try and get open to provide an option for teammates but the wind made it very hard for any decent forward entries for both sides.
Markov - made an error early on that was quickly addressed as mentioned above, after that I don't really recall him being that involved in play that much, might be one of those games where when you look at stats he did better than I thought.
Elton - played FB on Cordy and did pretty well all things considered, took a couple of strong grabs and worked hard to impact contests but still seems a fair way off becoming a senior footballer. Then again as I mentioned the wind made it hard for key position players to have a real impact either way.
Griffiths - played first half and gave away 3 dumb frees reacting to niggle from his opponent and trying to impose himself. Still there were some good signs in his attack on the contest and a couple of times he either just missed clunking the mark or just didn't get boot to ball to capitalise on good efforts. Not sure if injured or rested after half time.
Chol - as mentioned the conditions played havoc for talls to have a real impact but there were some moments where Chol did things that grabbed the attention both good and bad. The good was gaining possession on the bay wing and then taking off down the ground which led to mini Ivans goal. The bad was after some good play in getting back into defence and winning possession he passed it off then got it back taking off through the middle trying to drive it long, however a touch of cramp and a bad bounce saw the ball turnover and Willy goal. Pleasingly a few of his teammates got over to him and obviously told him to keep his head up.
Maric - played 3 quarters and after being a little rusty to start he quickly found his groove and got back to the bustling Ivan we know and love. As much as the fans would love to see him back in the side, I'd give him another week or 2 at VFL level before bringing him back in. A 5 day break and flight to Perth to face Nic Nat coming off a sore back might be a bit too much to ask.
Morris - typical Morris game, attacked the man/contest with vigor, showed dash out of D50 when the opportunity presented, but reality is he just isn't AFL quality given that he is simply a one trick pony.
Soldo - still very raw and would often line up in the middle on the wrong side of the circle to allow for the wind impacting the ball up. Also at boundary throw ins a similar thing happened as he didn't adjust to the ball dropping short into the wind. Little things like that can be addressed and it's learning the art of the ruck. Outside that he was quite serviceable for a kid in just his second real season of footy.

Based on that those in contention for Friday night would be Moore & Hunt, while if we wanted to give George a debut I wouldn't be against that either.

Really good write up, thank you

I'd rather play Hampson by himself. He's gaining confidence with every game, which is improving his around the ground work to go with his elite tap
No way. Short turn around between games

Agree- game v WCE is at Subiaco on Fruday
Leave Hampson in the side...was ok v Adelaide...unless his leg is stuffed

What a crap report. No mention of going to a game with a 1/4 charged battery.:p:D

God dam it sounds like they rested griff in the second half for the 5 day turnaround. **** i hope he doesnt get on the plane

Yeah absolute bullshit McBean hasn't been afforded the same selection leeway that Griffiths seems to get.

Just for a comparison:

Griffiths had 16 disposals and 5 marks in his first two games this year.

McBean had 16 disposals and 5 marks in the first two games of his career.

The only difference is Griffiths got more tackles and hitouts as a pinch hit in the ruck but McBean also got subbed out.

So why do we persist with 24 1/2 yo Griffiths who has 50 games experience and through his career has only averaged 8.4 disposals, 3.5 marks and 0.6 goals per game. He offers no pressure up forward and his pinch hitting in the ruck ends after his medium height leap.

Alternatively, we could go with a bloke who continually kicks goals in the VFL with 2 games experience that has managed to match the output of Griffiths in his first two games. He's also only 21 1/2.

We also won the 2 games McBean played. The first was against Collingwood when our season was nearly over and the second was in Fletchers milestone game. Even if he didn't hit the score board, he did something that made him useful to our team structure.

I still can't believe we didn't play him again after round 9 last year, another one of Hardwicks great development plans.

Griffiths Is injured, finished on crutches with ankle/foot in ice. Was asked how his injury was and he shook his head so would think he will miss weeks. Disappointing last quarter, coach was frustrated and angry with effort and concentration. Difficult conditions but Richmond do not work for each other, not that hard to lay some shepherds.

Disappointing news for Griffiths but opens the door for McBean. Surely if Hardwick is serious about wanting to play three talls he has to give McBean a go next week.

What was A.Moore's kicking like ?

Just read that George had 9 tackles 9 contested possessions and 7 clearances, add that to his 2 goals and a debut might be on the cards after all. Moore had 15 tackles & 16 contested possessions as well. Bring them both in.

There is something SPECIAL about George gee he is quick and has a great turn just as he gets tackled his kicking has improved as well would give him another couple of games in the 2s b4 bringing him in . Watching our reserves at Punt rd will be a lot more fun than last year like the way mcrae coaches hope we get some big crowds .

Better than that flog Tim Clarke eh ? He'll fit in well at Carlspoon

Would love to see McBean getting a run as the third tall with Ty being our back up ruck. I remember for years hearing about what a gun this kid Rance was going to be before he broke into the team. Hoping that's the same progression for McBean...

Just on McRae he told the group at quarter time that if they are going to lose they are going to do so their way, which I found amusing. Then at 3/4 time he wasn't afraid to rip into them for going away from team rules.
