Our Number 1 most hated team, the Collingwood Magpies.

Now I’m too young to have attended any games or even possess any really clear memories of our early clashes at Victoria Park, but I have heard some harrowing tales over the years, and I’m sure many fearless early Dockers fans braved unspeakable acts of depravity at the home of the Pies, and were most certainly on the receiving end of a frightful reception in our early days in the competition, in what must have been a torrid affair for those brave or foolhardy enough to make the journey.
But it didn’t stop there. This club also took our faded cult heroes Clement and Medhurst and turned them into stars under their roof. Years later they offloaded a dud Tarrant for overs at the height of our desperation, who we carefully developed and cultivated into an elite and fully functional full back, only for them to turn around and screw us at the trade table once again, by taking back the reformed, rolled gold star for unders.
For years they made overtures to our beloved Pav, shamelessly throwing themselves at him year after year, thankfully the GOAT had way too much class and far too many teeth to ever seriously consider the desperate Pies’ pleas.
Jack. ****ing. Anthony.
Then they fleeced us for the best bloke going around at the club right at the peak of his powers, and managed in the space of a season to nearly completely destroyed his career right before our eyes, before the Mayne man had the last laugh much to the chagrin of the mean spirited head coach Buckley and reinvented himself.
They even had the audacity to rob Nat Fyfe of a certain Brownlow last year through the sickening act of a thuggish Levi Greenwood launching his face recklessly at an innocent, unsuspecting Fyfe forearm, in what was a clearly premeditated attack on the man and his greatness, cheating the great man out of a second Chaz and eternal glory in the annuls of AFL history.
They will probably do the dirty on us next year and pinch our beloved Ed to complete the fairytale pairing of the brothers Langdon they also robbed us of in the offseason by re-signing Tom. All this, after not even having the decency to lie down and take one for the competition in our last round send off of club champions Spurr & Johnson.
But nothing compares to what those ****ing campaigners did to us on the last Saturday in September.
Hey, at least we all got to enjoy Eddie’s tears.

After an historic loss the likes of which had never been seen in our history in Round 22, we bounced back solidly at home in a fashion befitting of the club champions we farewelled that day. In honouring 244 game veteran and club indigenous games recordholder Michael Johnson, mature age recruit and elastoplast enthusiast Lee Spurr and free agent success story Danyle Pearce, we pushed a sluggish Pies all the way on a gorgeous afternoon at Optus as we finished of an underwhelming season in style. Hayden Ballantyne turned back the clock with his run and dash, while Lachie Neale had a super last game for the club, and Bradley Hill showed his worth on the expanses of Perth Stadium with 35 touches. For the Pies, mature ager Mihocek was a handful up front, while the veteran duo and premiership teammates Sidebottom & Pendlebury combined strongly as the old firm helped the Pies to a last gasp 9 point win in what was a valuable tune up for their finals campaign that ended up eventuating in a Grand Final appearance.
Brodie Grundy
Clubhouse leader of the 2019 Didaka Medal (https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/didaka-medal-2019-leader-board.1215568/ ) on the Pies board, Lobb will have his hands full in the ruck contest, but they will be filled to overflowing trying to match Grundy around the ground and at ground level.
Scott Pendlebury
The evergreen Pies champion has hit his straps in recent weeks, and is coming off a classy 29 possession game against the Swans. On his day he remains one of the most dangerous midfielders in the competition with his basketball background.
Jaidyn Stephenson
Bradley Hill
Seems to have recaptured his mojo, and was instrumental in our last quarter surge against the Lions. Has both Phillips and Sidebottom covered for pace and guile on the outside, but he may be in for some attention on the back of his match winning effort on Sunday. Currently sitting 10th in the comp for metres gained and it showed on Sunday, with Hill back to his best.
Luke Ryan
A commentator’s favourite this season, as the rest of the AFL world seem to have finally cottoned on to what we have known since his debut, this kid can seriously play. Has taken his game to another level after a strong finish to 2018. While Wilson possesses the turn of pace and a superboot, Ryan possesses Spurr-like courage and an incredible read of the ball in flight, seeing him currently ranked #1 in the AFL for intercepts per game.
Sonny Walters
The fitting last gasp hero in what was a proud celebration of our club’s indigenous roots, Son-son putting the punctuation on the Sir Doug Nicholls Round after starring in many previous matches in corresponding seasons was about as perfect as it gets. Having yet another magnificent season and will definitely give a makeshift Pies backline some food for thought should Ross see fit to play him out of the pocket at times.
If Mundy don’t get you, Walters must.
A tight contest for much of the game, while you could fault the method at times you couldn’t fault the effort, and a powerful last quarter saw reward for that effort, with 15 inside 50s to 6 saw us overturn an 8 point deficit at 3 quarter time into a famous victory against Lachie Neale and friends.
Wilson and Hill, both racked up 30 odd touches, and just a single metre separated them for metres gained for the night, and add in Ryan with 32 touches himself, and the three gave us enormous drive and run from half back, with all 3 rewarded with AFLCA votes from the coaches and all 3 featured in the AFL Team of the Week. Fyfe and Walters were superb, and Brennan Cox stood up as a target with 2 goals as a well held Hogan was unable to exert any impact on the game.

Harley is warming up down at Peel, and fingers crossed we get to add his class to the mix in the back half of this year. Stephen Hill is finally on the comeback trail, and Connor Blakely has plenty of upside after making a cautious start to his season off the back of zilch preseason. Lukey Ryan has gone from strength to strength after a stellar second season at the club and has stamped himself as the premier intercept defender in the competition, Bradley Hill is hitting his straps after a sluggish start to the year, and the backline duo of Alex Pearce and Joel Hamling continue to restrict the AFL’s most powerful forward lines and will once again have their hands full with an eclectic forward mix at Collingwood.
Our back half of the year should see some of these key components returning and finding their best after early season injury, and Nat Fyfe will relish the reinforcements after shouldering a huge workload in the alongside the evergreen David Mundy. The natives remain restless however, and anything short of a finals trajectory will see the pressure return to Ross and co in the back half of 2019.
De Goey looks set to make a return this week, but an undermanned backline missing the likes of Langdon & Moore may benefit Hogan, Cox and co if we can get the connection right. While our small defenders will be breathing a sigh of relief to not see Jamie Elliott on the Pies team sheet come Saturday. Taylor Adams would be a handy addition, but even with their outs the Pies still sit comfortably in 2nd spot on the ladder.
The optimist in me says this looms as a danger game for the Maggies, as they are coming off a 6 game winning streak and would be chalking up a win on Saturday as a fait accompli. But with glimpses, albeit brief, of our best footy on the weekend, we may just be poised to pull of a major upset as the boys look to make a statement heading into the bye. Because why not.
If you don't believe me, chicken Nixon reckons so too, and when has his decision making ever been amiss?
Besides, Lyonball is back baby!
Fyfe to dominate once again, Hill to break the lines, Lobb to break even with Grundy and Coxy to kick 4 goals. Oh, and Mayney to hit 10 tackles!
Dockers by 13 points.
