The only thing that beat the Pies last night was the Pies.

Basic skill errors by hand and foot cost us enormously. Many under no pressure.

Everyone has spoken about Noble’s errors, but Bytel missing simple targets moving forward was unforgivable.

Even HH in the last when his simple handball to a player streaming forward missed him and turned a potential goal into a turnover goal.

But there were plenty of examples of this.

Once JFN was subbed out we were always going to lose.
Talk about putting up the white flag.
His clangers prior to that were part of the reason ( along with goalkicking inaccuracy in q1) that we didn’t have a winning lead at 3/4 time.

putting Parker in the back pocket was equally culpable . Surely Markov should have gone back if they wanted to bench noble. Maybe it should have been one of those games where we didn’t activate the sub at all.

All possibly true (although it’s proven unequivocally that an A grade key forward is not by a long shot the only path to a flag)

Probably not a topic for a post game thread.

Why not? We were discussing our lack of functional tall marking forwards in last night’s game.

And the best two on our list - Mihochek and McStay - aren’t going to be around much longer. So our temporary problem last night (absences due to injury) will become a more permanent problem in the not too distant future.

Yep the club will be looking for the next one. That happens in the off season. The two you named were obtained quite easily

Would be nice if we had some developing KPP in the VFL of genuine size and height.

Not undersized medium flankers.

Eyre will be back soon, and Kreuger is there and should be in seniors currently. I think Steene could be a serviceable key forward eventually a la Hale from Hawthorn.

But yeah slim pickings right now.

I suspect you are right that the midfield was the real problem, but the closeness of the scores would suggest that a better credentialed and performing player up forward, such as Kreuger, or Frampton down back could have turned the final result in our favour. Johnson was incredibly disappointing tonight. Subbing someone other than Noble may also have produced a different result. I don't think it's simply a matter of the midfield losing us the game.
A forward line missing Elliot, Mihocek, Cox, McStay, Hoskin-Elliot and no McInness= problems.

Playing Dean on Darcy instead of Frampton. Seems the coaches didn't learn from the opening 2 rounds.

Charlie Dean is a massive liability defensively and I've been saying it for ages. Teams are going to exploit whoever he is playing on because he's too weak/short to play on the talls, and too slow to play on the quicks.

If Frampton was in defence and Krueger played over Johnson that could have been a different outcome.

In the end you get what you deserve, we played a very very poor bottom 8 players tonight and it cost us the match.
Absolutely bang on! 👍👍

Positives: Howe was good I thought
Quaynor played his best game of the season, still not the level I'd hope he could be at.
Nick Daicos was freakishly good
Cameron was very good early. I worry about how often he is getting kneed in the back of the head.
Schultz played his best game in the BnW
Josh Daicos was good but had a few shocking moments
Crisp was good all night, tried hard.

Bad:
Ash Johnson. You simply delist him at the end of the year and pay out his 2025 contract, better for both parties.
Bytel is not an AFL player.
Mcreery needs to offer a lot more to the team. Never offers leads or anything when we have the ball at half back.
Harrison had a shocker. Invisible all night and very fumbly.
Fin Macrae is not an AFL player
Charlie Dean leaks goals every game he plays. Not strong defensively and teams are starting to work that out.
Markov/Frampton the experiment didn't work, but I wont criticize them as they're played terribly out of position.
Correct. All of it.

Who was going to play Cox’s role if it wasn’t Frampton?

Our only other option is 18 years old, has only been with the club 2 days, and has never attended a training session?

AJ has played relief ruck before. He was getting nowhere near it up forward, have him chop out and get him into the game. Billy successfully played as a defender up forward on Andrews and we got a flag, but it’s time for the experiment to end.

Talk about putting up the white flag.

We’ve been playing to slowly lose fourth quarters for quite some time now.

Not the match, but certainly the fourth quarter.

Needs to change. Manage the moments in the last 5-10 minutes, not the entire quarter, it’s too much momentum to give up. For the most part you play the way that won you the lead in the first place.

HH had some quickfire handballs on-target sharked by the Bont. It will be good experience for him. Another level up.

I reckon Mcstay has another 4 years and Checkers 2 or 3. Things are far from the bleak picture you paint.

Of course it matters as we had plenty of opportunity from defensive transition but often couldn't get it past the halfway point on the ground.

We had no targets forward of the footy.

Dogs locked us in thier front half.

You are looking at one aspect ie center stoppages and saying we could only win or lose it there.

What about all the times we defended (which you acknowledge they did manfully) and then transitioned only to fail at wing, HF or bombed long to Jones?

They are also opportunities to score.

No structure forward makes that transition fruitless as it was.
Howe forward like most are saying we should have done would have weakened our defence. He was fantastic.

The other option was Krueger. Do you think he was going to play a Nick Riewoldt role for us?

We needed to take more opportunities in the first half and less howlers from Noble to set up a big lead.

That wasn't lost through talls. We got smashed at stoppage and had a lot of vfl level flankers who contributed little offensively.

It seems the last couple of games we have run out of legs. When you have that many inexperienced players in the team, maintaining a high pressure game is difficult.

But they will be good for it as their condition improves.
For sure, lots to like about the regeneration of the team.
Reality will bite against the Dees though.
Just have to hope we can get over North and then reset after the bye.

All going well, we will be in the mix for a lower 8 finish. A home elimination final would be a great result after the challenges this season.

Not overly concerned as the boys had a crack and like many have mentioned, just ran out of legs in the end. The problem of goal kicking accuracy reared its head again but I believe that’ll improve when our players return.

We are still in this and can win it all.

Our depth players are depth players they are not all suppose to be in the team together,
Yep. The mismatches and the failures in the game were in large part due to us trying to fill holes and move around a bunch of inexperienced depth players. And the extra workload on the more experienced guys.

The tipping point could be two or three players under 10 games. We had four plus Macrae with a few more games experience.

If we can’t get over North, even with a VFL team, then we may as well pack it in and send the guys on the end of season trip.

We could do a Dog's 2016 if all the troops are up and running in September.

We couldn’t get it forward of the D50. His run could have been handy to break the defensive setup.
We needed something and at least I know he would have had a crack at going forward.
