With all due respect Briz not all random people are stupid. If a parent gifts their kids $100k to build a house whose investing the money? It’s the kids not the parents.

essentially the lions have been gifted government funds.
You take a random person, especially someone who doesn’t follow AFL, do you believe that they would know the Lions are broke? In debt a few million?

They see all these football stories of players signing multimillion dollar contracts, might read that Foxtel has signed a near billion dollar media rights contract, etc.

Random people don’t differentiate Collingwood from Brisbane. They’re (AFL clubs) all the same.

We’re inside the sport, so to speak. So in such discussions, there’s a fair amount of inferred knowledge. But still, there are some (many) things that should still be spelled out or presented correctly.

And I’ve been guilty of typing stuff that’s been interpreted wrong, and most times that’s been on me. Usually I own it and move the discussion on.

This was a discussion from approx 6 months raised by a poster who’s rarely ever able to form a coherent argument or thought in any of their posts.

I’d well and truly moved on.

On birch, I have openly stated I am a fan but I believe that the pace in our backline on Thursday is what we need and that rich can play the quarterback role by himself. However, I would offer birch a contract (low value) for next year as he would be great back up for if rich goes down injured as well as coaching / development for Michael who seems to be labelled as the long term rich replacement.

I also like Birchall although agree we too slow in the backline. Need 3 talls and Rich/Starc and 2 others.

The interesting thing is even though Rich and Brichall by foot are their weapons. We normally very slow and steady out of the back line
Until we go past the centre circle. Assume game plan

Against the Cats and no Birchall suddenly we started kicking faster to targets and moving the ball fast.
That kick Rich did to Zorko who then kicked to Linc for a goal end of the first was brilliant.
Before this game we hardly did those type of kicks.

Maybe game plan against Cats as they are similar to us who build slowly.
Although what we did to Cats is what other teams have done to us as well to beat us.

I think generally too much is read into one match ,mostly the last match.

There were plenty of reasons our backline looked better this week the main one being the Geelong entries were very poor and their M/F was not manning up quickly enough on our exits. Overall Geelong was really below par and if not gifted a few goals in the 2nd coupled with our innaccuracy would've lost by 10+.

That's not intended to downplay our excellent performance at all. But the opposition was poor.

As an example Adams completely outplayed Hawkins but how many times did the incoming kick under not extreme pressure go straight to Adams with Hawkins 10m away. Adams read the play very well but they didn't give Hawkins a sniff . There were rarely opportunities where he could lead into the surge forward, something he usually does regularly.

Pretty sure there were 5 one on one contests between them Adams won them all.

For those that don't want to sit through the full replay or just want to revisit this great win.
Below link is a very good 25 minute highlights package. Counted 3 short adds
Lots of good plays from the Lions. Seeing we won easily the highlights are mostly of Lions
One thing you don't see too often these days is 3 left footers nailing 3 goals with the traditional drop punts
All kicks were on the wrong side of the ground for left footers.
Kiddy & Daniher basically from the same spot. Hippy further out but a slightly better angle
Enjoy: I know i did. Being able to cast to my TV was great

One of Geelongs first I50s was a Adams Hawkins contest. Hawk outpositioned him, threw him aside... then dropped the ball cold. I dont call it a Hawkins win, but I do call it an Adams loss.
That was about it until the last though.

While on the subject of the video DaLions posted… Seeing what Rich’s skillset can do in a high quality team makes me feel sorry for Josh Drummond.

Poor dude was the ultimate victim of bad timing.

I had the pleasure of having a chat with Josh at a Lions B&F. I think it may have been 2009. It was pretty late in the evening when most of the other Lions players had cleared off

A really nice, unassuming and genuine bloke.:thumbsu:

Made me feel like I was the most important person he'd had a talk with all night (which obviously, I wasn't)

One of two extremely impressive slingshot moments in the game. Unfortunately Charlie failed to finish the other one off.
This was our best transition of the entire season. Would love to have the behind the goals footage to see how we set that up and opened it up so much. Very rare to see us do that, the Rich kick was ballsy and insanely executed.

There appears to be some learnings from the Melbourne game - getting through the intercept mark zone and force the defence to play one on one. Add on ball tackle intensity and hard running / courageous kicking. Coaching triumph

Dev kept Selwood to just 13 touches which is his lowest count (for a FULL game) since 2014. This kid is the real deal.
Yep, I think there have been enough really good glimpses from Dev to be confident and extrapolate that he is going to be a very good player for us over the next 10+ years.

I'm also happy enough to make a long range prediction that he'll be captain of our club before the end of his career, leadership is something he was lauded for in juniors.

Wow 'Brett C' you have virtually called me stupid in a post and then stated.. a poster who’s rarely ever able to form a coherent argument or thought in any of their posts
Whist a few of my post (probably too many) have been negative towards Birch, and a couple towards Lester and Adams (although recently have acknowledged Adams has improved and deserves another contract), I did state that Birch would play a role in the back end of the season and the finals. I also stated that in 2020 of all the regular backs Birchall spent the most time off the ground.

You seem to have ignored the following post over the past couple of years, which I believe demonstrates for an old retired bloke I still can contribute a little towards the various discussion on this site;

a) I have been a strong advocate to play some of the young guys over the past two years, with an eye on the future, because unlike teams such as Geelong, I believe our premiership window is not 1 or 2 years but potentially 6 or 7 years. I posted back in 2020 that Payne deserved an opportunity and he will now be a long term player for us. This year I called for Madden to be given a chance due to his pace and he has shown promise in his few games. I have also mentioned a few others in various posts.

b) I supported Starc in a few positives post after his first 15 games when some were questioning if he would make it. I stated young guys just need a chance to develop etc etc

c) I have posted a number of times how much I like Robertson and especially Bailey, and after the round 1 loss to Sydney when some thought he held the ball too often and gave away a few frees, I was positive and stated that I rather see him take the game on as he grew in confidence, he would be a very good player for us.

d) After the round 4 loss to the Dogs when sitting at 1 and 3, a few posters were worried about the 2021 season and I posted that we had a relatively easy H & A fixture (despite playing the 2020 GF twice) and stated we could still finish 2021 somewhere between 3rd and 6th. I also stated over a month ago I was confident we could beat Port, Eagles and Cats at the GABBA

e) I stated at the beginning of the year that unfortunately hubs were very likely

f) I maintain that our backline is too slow with Birch, Lester and Rich all playing and some of the top teams such as the Dogs, Demons, Tigers will exploit that. I know it is only a small sample size but how much better did the structure of the backline look with some leg speed via Payne and especially Madden

I have really enjoyed Big Footy there are so many knowledgeable people who contribute across a range of issues and I enjoy the match previews immensely having not as much knowledge as some. This will be my last post for sometime but will keep reading and GO THE LIONS!

As a fellow "old retired bloke" I say don't stop posting Ralphy, Brett has a rather blunt forceful posting style (which BTW I have no problem with), just let it brush over you.

Went to the game on Thursday night and just finished watching the replay now. Fagan & Daly turned the tables on Scotty this time and out coached him with a dominant strategy that was deadly effective. One thing I was concerned about watching live & was also evident in the replay was Joey & Charlie's defensive efforts were almost non-existent. Dont want to take the shine off the win because it was awesome to witness but, to firstly qualify for a Grand Final & then to win one, we need all players to contribute everywhere and anywhere they can. Dan, Linc & Hippy were all busting their gut when the ball was with the opposition which was good but we need all players invested not just some.

I have seen both Joey and Charlie defend in games so I wonder if this is a very offence style strategy to have J & C play with a loose more attacking mindset in the forward fifty or whether they both need to lift in this area.

Definitely noticed it early on and imagine both were spoken to at half time as their pressure sent up a notch in the second half. Particularly Charlie.

Charlie used to put in so many defensive efforts when he first came to the club as well. It's been disappointing to watch that drop off. Hopefully comes back in finals as we'll need it
