Round 18 vs Melbourne - They Win, We Win - Team & Match Discussion

Just about the worst game of footy I have ever seen. How bad we can be.

I don't give a f*** about tanking or whatever, we were terrible against a rabble who were clearly tanking.

It worries me that we just scraped over the line for a win today against the worst team in the competition who were down on men (through selection AND on the day through injury) and who may have been tanking (coach only).

I don't want to tank ourselves and congratulate the eagles in winning today but the coaching staff of Melbourne looked genuinely worried when they hit the front. It does take the gloss off our win somewhat....:(

If Melbourne won today it would've been even better today to go along with the WCE win. Would've put us back into contention for Trengrove.
You do realise we could still end up landing him, this time last year Rich was touted as a possible number 1 pick and fell to 7, the year we took Deledio, Franklin fell to pick 5 after being talked about as the number 1 pick. Draft camp will have a huge say in where the kids will end up being ranked, just because BF ranks kids as top 3 picks it doesn't mean they will end up there.

He may well but with games coming up against Sydney and West Coast, I doubt it. Would've been hilarious karma if Melbourne won today and they probably deserved to win as McMahon marked it after the siren. Would've been justice though with the obvious tanking tactics they rolled out today, if they won and went 1 win closer to losing their P.P when they're doing everything in their power to stop that. I'm a pro tanker and even I think some of tactics they employed today were disgraceful and ridiculous. Playing the kids who might not be ready is one thing but to play their ruckman at CHB on Riewoldt and he was also on Cousins for a bit, Newton (their forward) played in the middle all day, their key backs went forward, Syliva and Morton didn't play, Valtenti on Brown, Miller in the ruck, Bartram starting on Riewoldt while Frawley sits on the bench, etc. Not to mention they had no fit players on the bench for rotations for awhile due to more mystery 'injuries' and also had about 5 or 6 players still sitting on the sidelines. That's also the reason people are pissed off, even if we were playing shit today, if we were any good at all we still should've won by at least 5 or 6 goals.

I know it wasn't meant to be, but I found this really funny.:D

give me a ****ing break!!!

how any1 could possibly think today was a positive is beyond me. Debacle, disgrace, we are a bum footy club and I am disgusted we fell over the line. Football is a joke now and i'm packing it in. There was 1 team doing all they could to lose, PJ on Nbrown, miller in the guts, frawley up fwd FFS! they cheat and will get rewarded whilst the other side stupidly trying their darndest to win get penalised. The sick joke is everyone is saying that Melbourne need the extra draft picks, well if they arent playing their best players, doing their utmost to lose and we struggle to beat them where does that leave us???

I haven't been so shattered for a long long tme and WE WON. This is not right, **** footy.

completely agree - Bailey made the "moves" to ensure he gave Melbourne every chance to lose that game.

footy is a scam - no other league in the world has any situation as ******ed as this. Can you think of any other competition that has a policy of "how many picks you get, depends on how many games you manage not to win?"

Bailley should feel ashamed -his players obviously wanted to win, but he did every thing in his power to make them not. His players must hate him, its obvious - otherwise they wouldn't have tried so hard to win despite him quite obviously trying to make them lose.

game fixing at its worse - all in the AFL:(

I wonder how Jimmy feels about the whole situation.

Forget all the coaching moves that Bailey made and focus on the one positive that come out of today, we played like shit and still won. It doesn't matter whether Bailey handed us the game by his coaching, watch how the players reacted after the loss and then you know what the game meant. Despite everything Bailey did to try and lose the game his players nearly pinched it and quite honestly they deserved to win it.

Winning today isn't something to sneeze at, I know some of you think thats crap, but in years past we would have been touched up, even by the Dees, playing like we did today. You can discount it all you like but I am a firm believer that learning how to win games when you're not playing your best footy is just as good a great development tool for young sides, as winning by 60-100 points is.

Today was a reality check for a young side who might be getting a little ahead of themselves. If I was conducting a review of the game with the players the one thing I would be hammering home is just because they had a good win one week doesn't mean they can just front up the next week and expect it to happen, which is the feeling I got before play today watching the players have a kick around about 90 minutes before the game.

They were joking and laughing and generally looked like they thought they just had to turn up and they would win the game. When watching us against some of the better sides in the comp the one thing I have noticed with these sides is that before the game they are switched on. They know they still have to work just as hard to win against a bottom dweller like the Dees or us as they would have to against a fellow contender. It is something we need to work on and it is games like this that are a great learning experience for the kids and next time they are faced with a game against a cellar dweller, I'm tipping they will be much more focused on doing the job at hand rather than just thinking it will happen.

****ing hell some Richmond supporters shit me.

At the game I was as nervous as I would have been if we were still in the finals hunt. People who want us to tank have NFI!

We were pathetic today, didn't turn up and probably didn't deserve to win... but hey, we did enough to win, the players cleary enjoyed the win so I'll take it any day!

Bowden HAS to come in for White (even though I love Whitey).

id be showing the team a highlights reel of Cuzz game, he was the only one that busted a gut for 4q...both Bling and cotch were well down on previous weeks effort and it told where we battled to win the midfield battles...there's alot the team can take out of this match and learn. will be good to see if they can bridge gap in performance v the swannies

Most of us are upset because we were a disgrace and didn't deserve to win today, not because of draft picks.

Do you think the Geelong supporters are upset that they won their last two games when they didn't deserve it?

I didn't know where else to post this.

I was at the game today on the forth level of the southern stand and I noticed that all the drink and food stalls were closed. I had to go all the way to the bottom level for a beer. What the hell was up with that?

You seriously just didn't make that comparison....

Difference is they didn't play like a bunch of *******s and they didn't come up against a team trying to lose at all costs.

the coach may very well have been indifferent about the result (and history shows he has **** all to do with the performance in any case:rolleyes:), but lets get one thing very straight boofhead, the Melbourne team busted a gut to win and were gutted when they lost

Who the **** cares if they busted their gut to win? Their coaching staff did everything in their power to try and lose and they still nearly won with ridiculous match ups, no players on the bench and half of their best team out.

No need to resort to using that word.
McMahon didn't mark the ball after the siren. He marked it on the siren and it doesn't matter anyway. If you knew the rules, the game is not over until the umpires hears the siren and signals accordingly.

Geez, you have got to be kidding me.

Geelong came up against two sides who busted their gut, and Geelong came out and responded with some truly sensational passages of play to win the game and deserved to win both on their own merit in my opinion.

If we played like we did today against how Geelong played against Adelaide or Hawthorn, and apparently didn't deserve to win, we would have been pumped by 12 goals. Minimum.

And remember that the umpire had to rebounce the ball after the Melbourne goal and 5 or 6 seconds were lost...even if the mark was a split second late, it still should have been well before the siren

Kind of ridiculous how casual the AFL is with the clock. It happens so often that seconds are lost and in close games it could change the result. I'm sure it does many times each season.

Of course we would have got pumped, Geelong are light years ahead of us.

Who cares what the coaches did to try and lose the game, the players that were playing the game for the Dees were desperate to win and did everything they could to steal the win despite being 2 goals down entering time on. We played shit, but still managed to win, in the past we would have just folded and lost the match.
