ESSENDON
Friday Night 7.40pm @ MCG
Richmond V Collingwood

Saturday 2.10pm @ MCG
Carlton V Essendon

Which of these two matches would you be more likely to attend?

Which will draw the most?

Which has the greater rivlarly?

It's going to be a BIG 48hrs at the G. :D

I'd rather see Richmond Collingwood, a good side against a young side compared to two up and down sides (respect that Essendon are young but the first game has more appeal for mine).

Essendon vs. carlton will probably be the better game so i'd go to that.

Realistically, the friday night match will be collingwood by the length of the flemington straight whereas the saturday game will be potentially the better match.

No offence to the OP, but the Carlton - Essendon games of late have been nothing short of some of the worst games in recent memory. Particuarly the first one last year, both teams just looked like they didn't care and even the commentators were mocking the level of play/intensity.

I don't think the players care as much as the fans do, for some of the traditional rivalries. Give me Collingwood and Richmond by a country mile. The best side in the comp, taking on a young up and coming side.

Even better give me some of the modern day rivalries. Geelong- Hawthorn, Syd- WCE mid 2000s, St Kilda- Collingwood.

I couldn't be bothered watching either of those contests unless it was a GF

I'm a fair bit more likely to attend the Friday night match, but I'd say that the Carlton-Essendon match will draw more fans, as it's a day game.

Agreed. I think the key is games between high quality and evenly matched teams. The four teams mentioned in the original thread might have been bigger historically, but that doesn't mean they're eternally entitled to the limelight when they are below par.

Neither of those games look that appealing

games like Sydney and Geelong at the SCG should be better that round

Exactly, unless you actually barrack for these teams, neither of those matchups are particularly awe inspiring. As a neutral fan, I just want to watch good games and don't particularly care who is playing, the crowd size, the bullshit build up the various TV stations give etc. The Richmond, Carlton opening game has been a continual non event, the over subscription to Essendon games on Friday nights in 2010 sucked as did the over subscription to Carlton games the year before. Just give us quality games, not based on shit that happened in 1978.

Essendon vs Carlton has more viewing potential and not just because I'm a supporter. Collingwood will smash Richmond to pieces if they decide to show up.

The only way I could see Pies vs Tiges being worth it other than for supporters is if Collingwood play like they did against Melbourne last year and actually make it interesting.

I would have thought..

Coll V Ess - Mon.
Fre V WB - Mon.
Haw V Geel - Mon.

Would be more attractive.

Collingwood is the better team of course, but there isn't a lot of difference regarding the age though. Richmond's average age in Round 22 last year was 23 years and 1 month. Collingwood's premiership winning team, a bit over a month later, was 24 years and 2 months.

Looks like it's all crammed in to 24 to me...

The fans will sit in their seats for another 24 hours to have a good reminisce sesh about the pure quality of games at the G that weekend ;)

i'm pretty sure the AFL will end after Round 4 as it will never be able to put out a better slate of games at the G ever

It will depend on how the big 4 clubs go in the first 3 rounds. If the Tigers and Bombers have their tails up leading in, crowds should be huge.

Disclaimer: I know it's very likely... actually almost certain we will get smashed.

Jealous much because no neutral fan would want to go watch the Kangas play? Yep think so, sounds bitter to me.

Yeah and EVERYONE could be bothered going to see Geelong Vs St Kilda in the finals last year.

Be lucky to get 50K at your Round 1 match in the limelight on a Friday night.

oooh. Has to make it personal.

A geelong v saints game is a better prospect than Essendon v 'anyone' at the moment.

That's just the way it is right now.

Don't go getting sooky.

I think it's been atleast 5 years since anyone has cared about Essendon mate... not saying we're that appealing to the neutral supporters but i can't see anyone bar anzac day going to an Essendon game as a Neutral Supporter, The Jobe Watson show aint exactly a hot ticket

Okay whatever you say. Let's look at the attendance figures come end of Round 24 then shall we!

Not personal at all. Don't know who you are at all so how's it personal?

You went off the topic and introduced teams outside of the 2 two matches I was making the thread about. If you can't contribute or don't want to stay out of it. Pretty simple really.
