Round 4 2011 - as a neutral fan

Both will have good atmostphere so for me it's a choice between watching Juddy or JR8.

I'll take the high-flying forward every time (with the bonus of watching Dids, Daisy & Dusty).

For me personally I haven't even thought about the Richmond V Collingwood game. The game VS Carlton in R1 is all that interests me until its out of the way and then the build up to the Pies game will have relevance.

Exactly. For the Pies game to be big, we need to play well Round 1 I think. I'm confident we'll do well Round 1 and not put in a lazy effort such as we did in Round 20 last year. We weren't ready in Round 1 last year to put in a strong performance because of the amount of debutants we had and also the number of talls we had on the sidelines. At least this time we will have more than 1 tall forward. We'll probably have 3(Reiwoldt, Post, Griffiths) this time and that will free up Reiwoldt, while Post and Griffiths will give us more marking power and players such as Morton won't have to play as a 2nd tall forward. Instead he'll more dangerous with a much shorter opponent. Houli and possibly Taylor will also make us more dangerous up forward. Our forward line will be much much better than it was in Round 1 last year. Our defence will also be taller than Round 1 last year. Astbury and Gourdis will give us a fair bit more height down there, while the midfield will be strengthened with Foley coming back, as well as the improved fitness of Cotchin and Martin. This is a much fairer match up. We'll have much better structure with alot more height and we should expect a pretty good game. Even if we lose, it will hold us in good stead for Round 2 and 3. We were reasonable against the Saints last year and finally get to play them at the G again. We also play well against the Hawks and should expect to do well. I think we can get a win before the Pies game :thumbsu:

Richmond's average age in Round 22 last year was 23 years and 1 month. Collingwood's premiership winning team, a bit over a month later, was 24 years and 2 months.

And? That equates to around 3-5 extra senior players; which is significant enough. Only need to have taken Darren Jolly from the Pies outfit and you'd have no flag.

This would be the same argument crows or other fans use for not attending port matches, right? Just because you guys missed out on setting a tradition whether by being non-victorian, or by being crap for 50 years doesnt negate the traditions in itself.

Going to the match is about atmosphere, not necessarily quality of the game, although that will no doubt help. Richmond v Carlton round 1 has atmosphere, more so since the Tigers have some optimism and are finding their way, the Blues are looking to get somewhere. Carlton v Essendon could go other way, as it did last year - and its guaranteed to have atmosphere. Thats what 100+ years of rivalry will do for you. No less than a Carlton v Collingwood match will do the same even though the Pies completely towelled us twice in 2010.

Of course you could rather be at Aami Stadium with half the stadium covered in plastic so that the crowd looks bigger than something even a north supporter points at and says "what the f...". If a neutral supporter had to go to a match, do you go to one where the atmosphere will be awesome, and the game ordinary, or do you go to a quality game with no atmosphere. If its the later, you may as well stay home and watch it on tv.

Way to miss the point *******. A poor quality game between 2 crap teams or one good team and one crap team is still a crap game for a neutral viewer, regardless who's playing and regardless if there are 5 or 5 million people there. Why do little girls get so upset when a fact is pointed out, like their team just got dissed and they have to be all tough and shit?

I notice all the non-big 4 jealousy. Everyone outside it try's to dismiss it and say they dont care, but they do and they post. The big 4 is real and theres a reason why these games draw the biggest crowds every year. Suck shit you minow clubs fueled by rabid jealous and an inferiority complex.

Way to take it personally chief.

My comments relating to the topic address the fact that atmosphere, and an enjoyable match can be had regardless of the quality of the game itself. This is more likely to be had at a game where supporters are actively involved.

And i singled out Port because they are a teaam that has a proven inability to attract neutral support to ANY match.

You talk like a 5 year old, you can't spell, you live in Geelong and you support Richmond . You got the Quadrella there buddy.. I bet you're a real winner at life :thumbsu:

Agree with most that neither game is appealing to a neutral supporter. A bit off topic but the hawks vs cats games since in the past two years have all been fantastic games even though we have lost on all occasions. The cats game is really the H&A game I look forward to most.

I remember them drawing nearly 90,000 a couple of years ago to a home and away match too. Not bad for two sides not privileged enough to be in the big four.

That was last year

We're actually probably just as young, possibly younger depending on who gets a game this year.

I'd wager the same for you. Or, you could get older, don't you have mid age players coming back from injury?

I heartily agree.

So many green eyed prix.

We have won 10 flags and have a rich history.

FFS we invented the oval ball.

Hope to see Pies fans turn up to watch the big 1 (Richmond)play on Richmond Paddock.:D

Don't rip us too much Krak and Malthouse me ole mates.

It's not jealousy at all. If you guys finish 1-4 on the ladder feel free to spruik yourself up as high as possible. But some of the fans of these clubs act like they're the only ones who can draw big crowds, which is NOT true.

Question - a few years ago, for the first time in over 20 years, a Grand Final drew over 100,000 people. Which sides played, and how many of the big four?

The answer to question 2 is none.

Do we really lose in R1 "Every year"? I must be ageing and my memory must be playing tricks because I remember us beating who was it? Carlton I think, as recently as 2008. I think we have lost a series of R1s since then....I think we are on a long long losing run of Two defeats.

We only have 5 senior players and 1 rookie between 25 and 29. You guys have 11 senior and 1 rookie

MCC is predicting 67K for Friday night and 75K for Saturday afternoon.

Over to you neutrals, which do you prefer?

Anyone attending either or BOTH????

Can't be ****ed with either.
You already know the result of 1 game.
And the other game is inbetween 2 nuff nuffs who won't do anything in finals.

To be 100% honest.
As a neutral fan, this is how I'd rank this round.

Syd vs Geel - both good teams
Adel vs PA - one of, if not the best modern rivalry
GC vs Melb - can GC get their first win? This is their best chance
Fre vs NM - Can a team with competant rucks actually compete with Freo?
Haw vs WC - Are WC good?
Coll vs Rich - Collingwoof are relevant therefore are above....
Carl vs Ess - Waste of time, neither will do anything, it's just a battle to make up the numbers

No offence to the OP, but the Carlton - Essendon games of late have been nothing short of some of the worst games in recent memory. Particuarly the first one last year, both teams just looked like they didn't care and even the commentators were mocking the level of play/intensity.

I don't think the players care as much as the fans do, for some of the traditional rivalries. Give me Collingwood and Richmond by a country mile. The best side in the comp, taking on a young up and coming side.

Even better give me some of the modern day rivalries. Geelong- Hawthorn, Syd- WCE mid 2000s, St Kilda- Collingwood.

True modern day rivalries can never Eclipse Traditional Rivalries. Some of the modern ones may stage on a bit longer than they should but they inevitably die when the nucleus of the rivalry dies. Essendon, Collingwood & Carlton have that traditional rivalry, itll always be more important to the fans than any other game in terms of "must win for bragging rights" factor.

No, neither.

Collingwood will beat the Tigers, probably in a canter.

The Ess - Carl game may require a moment of thought when doing my tips, but otherwise, I would not bother to watch.
This time I will obviously be watching the Hawks game.

Outside my own team, the Syd - Geel game will be the most interesting.

And if you want to see a genuine rivalry, not just an AFL manufactured one, then watch the Showdown.
They really hate each other.
