Ugh, I almost hate that I can find a ton of positives in a game that we lost by 30+, but:
  • Andrews and Gardiner immense. Anyone who hasn't let up on their criticism of Gardiner should probably watch out, because he's coming up to spoil you.
  • Rayner and Bailey both showed why they went top 15 in the draft, and I love that Bailey wasn't afraid to take the game on.
  • Berry and Cluggs both work so hard, and you can tell they're both benefiting from a huge pre-season. Both of them managed to hold their own in several contests they would have been pushed out of easily last year.
  • Welcome back Beams and Rich. (Oh and welcome back to the midfield after last week M Robbo).
Feel this is pretty spot on given where we're at development-wise.

But alas the negatives from tonight are also of a concern. Zorko, Lester, lack of marking ability from Hipwood + weak forwards.

Zorko needs to be dropped. Something very wrong there. He got some attention, but there was no hard tag today and he stunk.

Foot disposals from Whitherden and Baily was strong. Baily surprised me today.
Baily is now firmly in our 22 despite his small frame due to his potential.

Hipwood was MIA most of the game. His hands are just terrible at the moment. We try him in a different role next week or drop him.

McStay horrible. Bewick or Mayes would give us more than him at the moment. Drop him. He'll Eagles or Ballenden would give more.

We are going to get another very high draft pick again.

Someone answer the question what does hipwood offer ?

-Drops almost every mark
-Outmarked by players 20cm smaller than hipwood
-no footy IQ

gone from his biggest fan at the start of the season thinking he was gonna be a coleman winner in a few years to wanting him dropped, zero development from him this season. Also anyone have stats on how many marks he has dropped this year?

How long have you been following footy? Because the well established development path of key forwards means that you can’t even make a call on them before they play four seasons. Eric has just started his third and had a heavily interrupted preseason. His physical development doesn’t allow him to take the big pack marks yet, so he is a leading forward in a team that can’t deliver the ball inside 50 to save himself.

We still see regular glimpses of his freakish abilities. His ceiling is massive. He needs help to get there, not unrealistic expectations. Give him a break.

I know its taking our best defender away although is it worth giving Andrews a few weeks in the forward line.
Either Eagles or Walker in the backline. Maybe swap hipwood even for half a game. Try something.
Just we been close with inside 50's each week although Hipwood never marks, McStay gets 1 out of 10 and Walker not done much with his chance.
We need someone tall to take a mark inside 50.

Our game plan is to kick long and hope someone marks. With no one forward how does.. Cameron I would think lead inside 50 marks this year for us.

Hipwood is a half forward flanker and does not present as a key marking forward. His height makes people (including the coach) think he should be a key marking forward. He is a very poor mark. We are settimg him up to fail in that role. As a high half forward he offers plenty with his speed, agility and unpredictability. His ability to kick long goals from outside 50 is elite and that is where the opposition would be worried about him. Why Fagan persists with him as a key forward goes to his judgement. I think Walker is pretty much the only forward we have that plays as a traditional structural key forward, and whilst he is not going to be a champion, he attacks marking contests, leads up to the ball and gives the forward line some structure. To play and expext McInerney to play as a key forward is completely inept coaching. The boy is a ruckman who is a great mark when resting forward. He is not a key forward. He either shares the ruck with Stef (we looked better when he was rucking tonight btw) or he shouldnt play. Hipwood gibes no predictability to his team mates as a key so it is little wonder that our forward line is functioning very poorly.

Zorko has plenty of runs in the bank don't think he needs to be dropped, maybe a word or 2 from the coach and/or Hodge. Forward 50 entries are hurting the forwards at the moment, I think Hippy would look a lot better if he has getting better service.

Hipwood also needs more space inside 50. Bringing in OMc was never gonna help.

Yep, Zorko's on 95 off 150 balls and Lester is on 22 off 200 balls.

I back the coaches and football staff to understand the psychology of individual players and have the full picture on their form lapses. If they decide resting Zorko is best once they have weighed that all up, so be it, but I tire of people just suggesting dropping players is a universal panacea for form issues.

I think it speaks more to an emotional need by fans to want to see players punished for disappointing them. That ain’t healthy.

Yep totally correct.. he is a very tall flanker. Need another tall as a target and he can run on to .. I think that was the thoughts on bringing in the Big O today from the coaches.
McStay is like Bewick can do magic and then next play nothing.. Although people remember the 1 or 2 good things and which cause them to forget the 10 crap things :)

Rubbish game. Need to learn to stick tackles. Really not sure what's up with our tackling this year...

Lester needs an onfield coach role in the magoos.

Rayner had some good moments. Andrews and Gardiner solid.

Bailey needs to go back to Neafl. Shows some good glimpses, but every time he did, he also did something bad. Very few genuinely good touches. Was in the right position a bit more this game though, and when he gets some development into him, could be decent.

As we already knew, Stef sucks if played with another ruck. Need to either drop Oscar, or drop Stef for 2 weeks just to give Oscar a run.

Witherden had some good touches too. Coming back towards form.

Lester just made it to a contest.

Well......there’s always next week.

*shudder*
