Review Round 6, 2020 vs GWS

Listening to media this morning we are apparently playing another top team this coming weekend.
I am sure the AFL and umps will want their Carlton dream being kept alive šŸ˜‰
Yep, we all know that's coming. But then again, so do the players and coaches so I'm sure we'll rise above it. Just like they did with having to get up at 4am on match day and take a 3 hour flight before bounce down.

24 hours is a long time in AFL...

Provided the servicing plane was at the airport, take-off should still have been possible. It's generally landings that get held up. And besides, weren't they the AFL's plans, not ours? Can't imagine we would have chosen such a schedule, but who knows in this "anything is possible" year.

Well, we have the same game time again this week, so I wonder if it will be the same travel plan.

I think I watched a different game to some. Good last quarter, but the first three were awful to watch. The same shitty forward line entries as the last umpteen years.

GWS are an ok side, but I don't think this was an amazing win and they didn't play well.

We won, which we wouldn't have done in the last few years so that's something.

I was impressed by our ability to weather GWSā€™ third quarter. Before Dixonā€™s late goal and the subsequent fourth quarter the game had all the hallmarks of a trademark crumble. So that was nice.

Didnā€™t you know that Carlton beat Premiership favourites the Bulldogs Yesterday?

I wouldn't be laughing at the Blues just yet - they played really well and are likely to trouble us up forward with 3 genuinely tall targets (McKay, Casboult and McGovern) who were all in form yesterday. We should definitely go in as favourites for that game but it's hardly just the AFL media wanting the blues to be good, they've played some great footy at times this year.

The AFL is paying for everything, so I don't expect Port picked the flight schedule. I think some people just like to blame the club for everything.

This was another game in the middle of the night here that I tried to watch live but had to give up and go to sleep as I was missing half of the action anyway haha finally watched the game in full now, thought after that 3rd quarter that we would find a way to lose this but very encouraging to see the team came back and finished the match very strongly. I am enjoying Aussie sports like never before, as the Penrith Panthers are flying in the NRL :D

Ugly but ill take it.

At first watch I thought we were quite overmatched in the 3rd quarter and early part of the 4th, but on replay we looked fairly comfortable handling their pressure. Unlike last week against Brisbane,.the ball was hardly getting into our defensive 50 at a quick pace from the stoppages.

We turned the ball over a lot but our hard defensive spread mitigated that for the most part. Tactically we were well set up in that regard and you could see Giants players frequently frustrated as they tried to move the ball out of.their defensive half.

I'm concerned with our forward 50 entries because our tall forwards seemed to be on top of each other, getting in each other's way and what not. This has to get rectified. I also think that speaks to the ugly nature of yesterday's game in general. Once the game opened up late, we seemed to be able to create more space in our forward 50. I dont necessarily agree though that moving Westhoff back is what opened the space, but rather the space opening up because we were getting the ball out of the stoppage quicker and this allowed for cleaner entries where the 50 wasn't so clogged with a defensive flood.

Sunday is a must win against Carlton. They are playing well right now and have a similar game style to Brisbane. If we can get to 6-1 after 7 games we will be near perfectly set up to have a legit top 4 chance at the end of the season.

Definitely not laughing, just stating a fact.

Jonas deserves more love.
There are few harder heads in the game. Also, far too much is asked of him WRT opponent relative to his height. And that's not his fault, it's dumb list management. If he played for just about any other team they'd laud him as the second coming of Glenn Archer.

Great writeup of the game and you can tell that they actually watched the game instead of pulling out the tired cliches you may see in other publications.
Never heard of these blokes but they have my respect already **** Mumford cheating ****head

Let's not forget our lads were at Alberton at 5am this morning to make the flight up. Have played one game at home all year.

Could have been excused for not turning up or challenging this year instead are 5-1, clear on top.

If there is one thing this garbage competition has taught our players, it's resilience. This would feel alot like normal programming to us, but ****ing disaster for Victorians who leave the state three times a year.

Port Adelaide (63) v Greater Western Sydney (46)

Normally, after a disappointing loss last week, Port would have dropped their bundle in this one too.

Yet miracles do happen, and the Power now remain a team to take seriously this year.

What was impressive about this was when it mattered, in the fourth quarter, Port got everything right.

Ken Hinkley celebrated the win and AFL life membership in the middle of the circle when the team sung the team song. I love the social distancing at the moment in the AFL.

Players all sing the team song in a circle standing apart and then come together and all hug anyway. Itā€™s a bit like when the players all sweat over each other, tackling and grappling for an entire game, but when a goal is kicked, they all do fist bumps.

Itā€™s all for show. The whole idea is these guys are in a bubble, so when youā€™re in it, what does it matter if you hug after a goal?

Yet nothing sums up the AFL better, the look is the focus rather than the reality of whatā€™s happening.

As for the Giants, this was a very disappointing performance. Despite having the largest injection of talent in the history of the game, they look like coming away with just being a good not great team.

Itā€™s not necessarily an indictment on them, it just reminds us that winning a premiership is incredibly difficult, and this year will be no exception.

From same article:
"...which AFL team is the most sadistic towards their supporters?

The Saints and Melbourne are certainly in the race. Essendon and Carlton have been doing a lot of work in that area over the last twenty years and Fremantle are in the discussion. Adelaide seem to do it more to their players."

Yep. Getting constantly sent to far flung locations to play in front of nobody in shitty timeslots has done absolute wonders for our ability to cope with the randomness of this season. Other clubs are used to playing in front of big crowds with lots of attention and hype, you suspect after a while they actually rely on some of that to get them up and about and perform. Our players need to be much more self motivated than that.

This is his Port summation in another article:

.....Meanwhile I was very impressed with Port. The Giants got the first goal in the last quarter to give them a slender 3-point lead and you couldā€™ve easily thought the Giants would go on with it, but Port found another gear and slammed on 4 goals in a row and the game was over. This is the hallmark of a very good team who also suffered a disappointing loss last round and bounced back in emphatic fashion to let the rest of the competition know theyā€™re the real deal.

I bring this up every time one of their articles gets posted on here but The Mongrel Punt is the best footy website going around right now.

They also have a weekly podcast, and in this week's edition they went up even further in my estimation after becoming literally the first Victorian based media outlet I've seen point out 'hey, while we're all playing the violin for the Victorian players going into hubs, the SA and WA players have already been doing it for a month and the media didn't say a damn thing about it.'

I liked this win because our touch wasnā€™t quite there , we had Dixon dropping quite a lot of marks , McKenzie dropping a Clanger mark that cost a goal , SPP getting pinged for a 50 even though the ump called play on , strange one that, . Cameron taking the ball out of McKenzieS hands from behind but still being paid the mark That was probably 3 goals they didnā€™t deserve .
That being said we still managed to win because we gave ourselves more chances with better play .
Seems a winning ruck really does help the result . Lycett got smashed for the first time this year last week and we lost but he righted the ship again this week which went a long way toward us winning .
I think we can play a lot better yet , just need to keep winning the ruck so our short defence doesn't get caught out with fast forward entries

Have just watched the replay and noted a few things.

Robbie kicks our 3rd goal on the back of repeat efforts from Farrell. SPP immense without him we probably would've lost.

We remember the goals and the clangers but what really stood out to me was our team effort and our organised defence. From pressure on the ball carrier,

denying them the corridor, our smothers and repeat efforts it was a team win.

Unpopular opinion but Kern coached well. Sure the entries into our F50 weren't great but we repeatedly forced them to go down the line and altho' it wasn't a great spectacle

it was a sweet win against a good opponent. Forced changes for next week will be interesting. Georgiades Bergman & Ladhams. Duursma another week to make sure.
